The Axial Capra has instantly become a favorite for many. Some builders have even started modifying it before they finished building their original kit. John has been having a great time with his Capra, but of course the more he drives it, the more the wheels in his head turn. That of course means it’s time for a project! John has some plans in the works. In this video John will go over some of his thoughts for a custom C2 and C3 Comp build that include the Capra portal axles, a custom frame and some 3D printed parts. Love it!!! The 30% OD at the driveshaft or the ring and pinion will be about 15% after the portal reduction in the portal boxes. I can't wait to see how this progresses!!! Oh and I'm sure I speak for everyone on this....custom motor??? lol yeah we may need those for our trucks too.

I modify dual rate shocks by creating my own stop rings for them. The stop ring is actually what makes dual rate shocks dual rate, yet no RC shocks uses them. Without stop rings the second spring is just for show! I also use a third spring inside that pulls the car down. This lowers the center of gravity and this is crucial when sidehilling and during very steep climbs. I've done these mods since 2009 and it works very well.

5 weeks ago I didn't even own a crawler, now I have a SCX10II kit, TRX4, Gen 8 AXE Edition, and a Capra kit on order. I really like everything about crawling, the scale looks, the customization, and the people. Anyway, thanks, for sharing.

I like the no over drive side of it for my trucks. It makes it challenging and it’s easier on the equipment from what I’ve heard.

Hell yeah. I just got a set onto my Brazin team. It previously had AR60’s on it, they sucked. Gonna take it out later and test it out.

My tip for the suspension is: hard springs in the front, Gmade G-transition or similar in the rear (droop setup+ soft springs), filled with ~40wt oil

Shock tip. Get 4 of the click pen springs. Place them inside the shocks on the shaft. Keep everything else on the shock the same. Outer springs, oil, and manifold. Gives you a plush ride for crawling.

I do not concur. I've tried it on all my rigs. I desperately wanted it to work for some reason. It destroyed every setup without changing the dial quite a bit to accommodate. Then when they were dialed in the performance just was not better than my preferred rig setups. I had to admit, it's not for me, at all. Plush is the last way I would describe the results! It kinda cushioned the plushness right out of my setups! I lack a better way to describe it. 😭😭😭

I found another problem with the capra that I would like to share. I prefer full beadlock wheels instead of the stock ones. But the ones I wanted to sue would not fit due to the portals. What I ended up doing is using a set of spacers made for one of Axials other cars to move the hexes out away from the portals. It is now 10 mm wider than stock and others have seen my rig and done the same so they can use rims they want to.

The problem I have is I still like the trx 4 axles more. Their taller portals make up for slightly bulkier pumpkin and a bit more since it's only one peak right at the ring gear that's bad. My favorite axle overall is the ar44 non portal. Gonna be tough to dethrone that guy.

Finally got everything I need for a Complete Capra. Setting up a slight Droop on the stock Chassis with a little trimming and some Shock mount Mods flipped up for the droop. My 1st build so I'll be playing with the shocks to get the Range and Flex I am shooting for. Even considering some custom links From Team Garage. link to my Instagram on my YT Channel with updates. Sorry John went with HW on this build. I do plan on getting a RYFT, and will prob get my 1st Holmes Motor when I either Build the Kit ? or get the RTR. I want to Build a Bouncer named "Bumble", Light Blue Frame and White Panels. Why Bumble ? Why... because Bumbles Bounce. ha ha ha yeah I'm Goofy

Appreciating the Axial portal axles mainly for the ability to use small diameter tires, keeping crawling challenging on small obstacles but not having the diffs hang on everything. I have plans to use a VS4-10 chassis, Element tranny, and tires just under 4" tall. Have about half the parts, hoping to start early 2020 on the build. Maybe a hardbody this time?

I'm in the process of rebuilding my 1/6 scale Hummer pickup with clodbuster axles. I'm going to do electronic overdrive ( because it's moa). 65t rear motor,45t front motor. We'll see how that works out!

Great Video! My Rule is always super soft Springs, heavy Oil (700-1000). How are you gonna do it with the center of gravity? I like the custom rails, but I would have also bent the rails in the back. Exactly the same as the front. With the portal axles you will get very close to the rear rails if you want a deep center of gravity. And then you will notice that you have no more suspension travel. The axle will collide with the rails.

Those capra axles are bad ass. I really like the width of them. I want a little more width out of my gen 8 portals but anymore and the portals themselves are shown too much. What body are you thinking?

John, you're a lunatic...but, in the best, and most positive, of ways...the type of "lunatic" that most (especially RCers) would love to have as a next-door neighbor. While the Capra is my first crawler, I've seen plenty of other crawlers, and understand how, and where, the Capra is better. Like you, I'm simply amazed at the Capra's capabilities, which is why I'm looking forward to building another...although, also like you, my second won't be 'stock'. My "problem" is deciding how to build it. While I REALLY like the cage/chassis, I also like the idea of a comp crawler rail-style chassis. I there is just some way to combine the two (using, say, just the middle section of the cage, which normally attached to the skid), fitting the "rails" between the skid & cage...THAT'S the style/design is like to see (and, with my second Capra, build).

The concept of 'overdrive' in an RC is new to me. Could you go deeper into that subject, sometime, John? At what point in the drivetrain is overdrive inserted? (can't imagine it increases the motor rpm output, as with 1:1 vehicles.) I'm also curious about how overdrive can improve turning radius...? Since you talked me into resubscribing, I'll be asking a lot of questions haha you may regret this, buddy

I could be wrong, but I believe they're referring to "overdrive" as the front wheels being geared so they spin slightly faster than the rear tires. Helps kind of pull your front end forward on super steep climbs.

Hey man so I'm seeing on eBay all these advertised holmes hobbies puller pro 4274 big brusless motors and in wondering if there just fake? I can't find any videos of them on KZbin and I'm just wondering if there real or not? I was looking for a nice big motor for the redcat be6s im building and was looking at some 4274 motors and i keep seeing these holmes puller pro ones. I would love to take everything from the Capra and throw it into a standard rail chassis. I can't stand having to work on it in it's current form. Please tell me that's in the works? One thing as far as competitions, are the Capra's axles too wide?

Alvin Marin I’m right there with you. Taking the cage off the skid is such a pain in the ass. But it’s the trade off for such a light compact truck. I’m sure companies will start making kits to swap the Capra to a frame rail truck. I wouldn’t be surprised if axial didn’t drop a new truck with Capra running gear at some point. I don’t think the Capra axles are too wide for comps. Plenty of people use wraith axles which are even wider. Most folks regard xr10 width as ideal mix of wide for stability and narrow for clearing gates.
