I've seen people tie paranoid at the far ends of the smaller tubes (closer to the hitch) so you can retract the small tunes without getting wet.

Cool mod on the trailer! I would definitely make some sort of mark (paint, permanent marker, tape, etc) close to the end of the pullout to prevent you from pulling them all the way out. Early in the morning and in a rush to get out on the water could easily cause someone to be overzealous in pulling out the extensions. An even better idea would be to use a cap on the inside end of the pullout, and also have the big PVC capped as well. Watching the video there is room for the slide outs to move freely even with a cap on them. If the outer cap was drilled just big enough for easy sliding of the pullout, then the inner caps would act like a STOP if they came all the way to contact the outer cap. 👍

Good stuff. I may try a mod like that to bring the yak off of my Xterra and into the water. As least it may save a torked back getting it off the top. Thanks for posting.🤙

+Paddlers Paradise yep. Always thinking about saving my back. I also work in healthcare 2 days a week. Back injuries tend to become chronic issues.

I like it a lot. I would worry about the telescoping section dropping out and dumping the boat hard. Perhaps either a rope cut to length that keeps it from going all the way out the back (connected to the front of both sets of bunks and running inside the 4" pipes) or a bungee that stretches just far enough to keep them falling out. I liked the thought of using the 4" pipes for storage. I might try that for a couple fishing rods!

+Daniel Merrifield certainly could secure the bunks if you wish. I will likely make something to secure for traveling and for when the bunks are deployed. Maybe a strap system that does the two jobs.

You might want to put end caps on the end and just cut a hole big enough for the inner pipe to come out. Reason being especially on the heavier yaks the end of the pvc can gouge the front or back of the yak depending on which end you're pulling back up to put back on the trailer. I have a Hobie PA14 and had too had that to mine Great idea

Great build Justin and Chad. I’m wondering if that would work for my full size truck bed, loading my Outback. Trey Herolds end cap idea would benefit too. If you drilled 1 or more holes in the bottom of the short cross piece it would let water in and out to prevent any tendency to float. It has minimal structural function other than as a spacer/anchor for the longer pipes. Love your vids.

+Idaho Brit true. That is a great tip. It might work for your truck. I don't see why it wouldn't. You will never know if you don't try. It is pretty cheap to build.

Good idea. However, you need to check and see if the "extenders" float when in the water. If they do then you wont get a good friction hold like you did in the yard. You may want to tie a rope to the front part of the smaller pipe and attach it to the front of the trailer (inside the larger pipe) and set the length so that even if it does float. The rope will keep it from coming all the way out.
@KayakDIY
@KayakDIY 7 жыл бұрын
+Ratdog 305 agreed. Then i may do a clip on rope setup to hold the rails from floating out of the main bunks. Shouldn't be too difficult to work out a method. I more or less wanted to see how the span would support the weight. I may even get some cheap EMT conduit and put inside the telescoping bunks to add weight and to stiffen the pipes more. Still overall quite happy with the solution. It will greatly prolong the life of the trailer.

Man, that slide out ramp is a very cool idea. I may try this on my canoe hauling trailer. I'm really impressed with that idea, go "Chad"! Thanks :) Also, might put a chamfer on the ends of the big pipes on back end to allow kayak to slide a little better over them. :)

Hey Greg, Thanks for stopping by the channel. That setup works well. Putting a chamfer on the ends would likely help. Have a great day on the water. 🙂👍 Sincerely, Justin aka KayakDIY

Great idea.... do you think the below would work as a way to protect against the 2" PVC ever coming out while in transit (should a tie down strap or bungee break)? Cap the 2" PVC piece and cement the cap, slide it inside the 4", and then slide a 3" collar over the 2" bunk from the opposite side. Cement the 3" collar to the interior edge of the 4" making it impossible for the 2" to slide back through it because it's capped. Just curious your thoughts after using this set up. I could see my idea having some issues with flexibility possibly. Either way- great idea, I'm definitely going to use some of your concepts when I re-build my trailer carrying my PA14

Justin, do NOT (I repeat, do NOT!) take that trailer in the water! I live in fresh water country and I have to change my bearings about every season because they pit so bad. The very same HB trailer. I can only imagine what salt water would do to them because they are not sealed, or even made for marine adventures to begin with. That's a recipe for trouble! Aslo carry a spare tire, even it you have to carry it on your back. You''ll thank me for it someday!
@KayakDIY
@KayakDIY 7 жыл бұрын
+Larry Talbot. That is great advice. I couldn't agree more! I made few trips in the water but not deep enough to reach bearings. I did submerge leds a few times and they have impressed me. Still saw surface rust on certain areas of trailer despite rinsing immediately. Well aware it isn't meant for that, but situations arose where I wouldn't get on/off the water without doing so. The spare trailer tire is in my truck bed storage. I got the trailer for $100 used on Craigslist. It already paid for itself. Next trailer after I save will be a custom aluminum design I have drafted. The other alternative would be a good used jetski trailer if I can find an aluminum one at a price I like. Galvanized here is ok but I want the weight savings for maneuvering it around house.

I paid more for mine than I would have paid for a brand new one (you can't get anything cheap here!), but it was already assembled and I figured it would have a big headache. By the time I re-did all the lights, painted it, built sides (in case I needed it for hauling furniture or something later down the road), upgraded the hitch to 2", replaced the axle with a heavy duty axle, added heavy duty stake pockets, etc. over the entire winter, I could have bought two of them brand new. I'm glad you got a good deal! The good news is, I don't have to break my back anymore lugging that kayak around! I think aluminium is the way to go for anglers in general. Mine never gets in the water and only sits in the back yard and I've had to sand off a couple of rusts spots already. Good trailer, just not great. Good enough for kayaking!

Thanks! I did contemplate it. You should see my new kayak fishing trailer. Eventually will do a video on the new one once I finish it. I bought Robert Field’s old kayak fishing trailer but have some plans to mod it to fit my needs better. When going on trips I needed ways to lock gear for trips. That has been the focus on the new trailer, plus increasing capacity and versatility.

+Idaho Brit it works great for guiding the tandem Island, but it gets a little bit awkward due to the akas/amas. The Hobie TI is a bit of work no matter what it seems. However, it is worth it. Love mine.
