The whole point of coming up with your own lego builds is trail and error. For your first time building a boat it’s great. You can modify it better and better. That’s what’s so great about legos. I enjoyed watching and look forward to the end results. You always end up making it work. Cheers!

I think for a first time building a ship this is not too bad However it still looks quite a bit off. I would reccomend looking at real life examples of both yachts, but primaraly Baltic sea and Mediterranean ferries from the 60s and 70s, some examples of ferries you could use for inspiration are the M/S Leopardi, M/S Finlandia from 1967 and the M/S Kapella also from 1967. Personally I think it would look a lot cooler with an old cruise ferry converted into a yacht rather than a modern raft, but maybe my idea might be too big

I love the concept. Thought! Ditch the dock, have the boat parallel to the garage and the car enter the boat via a side hatch/folding ramp. This way the boat could be longer and the width could be roughly the same as you plan or just a little bit wider. This would impede on the beach area a bit but really as a ultra rich dude you wouldn’t have your nice pristine beach area that close to your dock anyway. You could make the pool with an infinity edge too! Enjoying watching the process!!!

Have you considered building a catamaran? The shape would be easier to build, and it would have plenty of space for both the car and the living area. Plus, it would be a really fast yacht😄 And don't forget to add the transparent red and green studs on the left and right side of the boat!!! 😜
@Data.Bricks

The empty studs underneath could be used for a storage type area with boxes/crates of champaign and wine or other fancy things that someone with a yacht would want. Could be a good way to hide some of those exposed bricks

Thank you for letting me live lego vicariously through you. Based on your available space, you should consider a private car ferry instead of yacht. the bow on ferrys can be less tapered almost like a WWII beach lander. I think that would allow you different proportions and more flexibility to make it match the mansion. I also think you should consider the allocation of space to the dock. a skinny dock on each side of the boat might look better almost like lines on a car parking spot.
@kylestephanick3869

At least for your first boat MOC it looks great, far beyond what I’d be able to come up with. I think the boat would do well with a bit more length out the back. Maybe remove the dock entirely and rotate the boat 90 degrees so a side can open & you can configure a longer boat? Looking forward to the progress!
@mandalorian8906

I love the boat, however, if you ever move it to your lego city, I would consider adding parts of a back, with room for the car to roll out. Next to the mansion, the cut off sort of square part works, because it's backed up, but you should add parts of a back. I love the boat though, it looks amazing.

My suggestion is to make the boat 2 studs narrower by reducing the 2x white tile space on either side of the car to 1x. Also, you could cut into the driveway coming from the garage by 8-10 studs which would let you make the boat 8-10 studs longer. Doing both will improve the proportions of the boat.
@dereksonderegger

Thanks for putting this out here. Critically it emphasizes issues that we all face in our MOCs: parts inventory and space. Yes I’m sure you could build something better with a much larger space available and parting out a few more sets, but you aren’t. I suspect you’ll follow through with narrowing the top and it should look decent. If you ever get another chance to interview a pro-MOC builder, you should ask about the iteration process, because nothing is good after the first attempt. Too many people in the comments here think that a daily VLOG can produce epic results daily, and are dumping on this despite the result being 10x better than what most of us could do in a day.

I think the boat which will be sort of the centerpiece of your scene, should get some more thought and design poured into it. Maybe some design features could be lended from the speed champions? Also, take a look at other yacht MOCs and see what's out there and how other's have solved shapes and such. I rather have a project take some time and be done right, than hastening something together.

I am excited to see how the mansion plays out but the yacht just isn't quite up to your normal standard. I'd step back and work on other parts until you get inspired. I kinda agree with making the dock smaller and finding a way to use the extra room for the boat.

It's looking good! My first thought was tou build a Catamaran style boat, because it might help with the bulbyness needed to fit the car. But you did it with an improvised hull. I'm impressed!
@Angrist17
@Angrist17 Жыл бұрын
I really like that you're building this yourself with the constraints of the parts that you have on hand. That's what most of us would need to do. The ramp between the boat and dock looks great. And the interior detail on the boat is good. But that final boat design needs a LOT of love. The 32 stud length constraint is probably the biggest issue that causes all the other trouble. The car just takes to large a fraction of that length to get a good aspect ratio for the cabin area. Maybe turn the boat 90 degrees, increase the length, and drive on from the dock?
@ljoffe
@ljoffe Жыл бұрын
I know you know the boat isn't the best it can be. Change the front railing to a black strong, create 3 or 4 railings to attach the string. It will make for less bulk. The ship is too tall for being as short as it is, that would make it prone to capsizing. The back needs to be a hinged ramp, not swinging doors. The boat won't work with the dock in the city as you had stated originally, I think the city dock is too tall. Make the boat at least 12 studs longer and 6 studs shorter in height.
@Bricksie
@Bricksie Жыл бұрын
So it's that tall because it needs to accommodate speed champs on the bottom deck and a standing fig on the top deck. I only wanted it to be 32 studs, so it fits in the allocated spot I have for it, but ultimately, I'll have to rethink/rebuild.

@@Bricksie I know it might be too much to change, but you could move the dock to the other side and slimming it down a bit, this way you could have the cars drive straight onto the boat without an angle, but you can make the boat longer as you have more space. Yes you will have to move the path/grass area but this help with the proportions of the boat.

@Bricksie One of the things I genuinely appreciate about you Jordan, is the fact that you are incredibly passionate about your projects. ☺ You see something that needs to be done, then you go for it. You knew that you had never created a boat before, yet you did not let that deter you from making one for your island. Do you have all of the ideal parts? No, but you found a way to make your project come to fruition. 😎 Anyone could have waited until they ordered all of the ideal parts for the perfect MOC, or even still, just ordered a yacht kit from Brinklink or LEGO itself. You took a huge gamble, and simply built a MOC yourself, then posted it to KZbin. Everyone is a critic, be it with good intentions or not. I think you are an extremely brave person putting your creations out into the universe for everyone to see, and pick apart, then having to deal with how you feel afterward. Yes, I know this is how we learn and grow but it isn't always easy getting two, or three hundred people telling us how we did something "wrong" when we are simply posting something we took a chance on. Your boat fits the parameters you set for it to fit on your island. Can you improve it? Sure, but you know this. As your inventory expands, I am sure you will. Those are decisions you will make as you see fit. I rather like the way you designed your watercraft. It has plenty of room for your Speed Champions, your LEGO figurines, and the size constraints of the island itself. Keep doing what you are doing Jordan. I am so proud of you and everything you have accomplished with your LEGO City. 🤗 Please say hi to Josee' and the kids, and of course, all of your fur babies. 🦮🐕‍🦺🐈 Much love to everyone. 🥰 💜💙💜💙💜

@Bricksie..... I think for some detail you might want to think about some lego chain or lego rope in the car transport area where the exposed studs are. It will make it look more authentic & help cover up hard to cover studs. No one just puts a car on a boat/ship without securing it down with something correct?!?! It's all in the details. 😀

This is great try mate, really like how u describe your steps of doing it and interior is also awesome. I think the problem with that boat is the vertical size. It is just abnormal and would just flip on side with first wind. I think the boat to carry that extremely large car need to be like double width. Its like you should put the top floor at the front and the storage car area should be just half of the boat. The captain area need to be in front and maybe you should make dock larger so the boat can dock from the side not from the front of the garage door. You could fit that boat then i guess. Just my thoughts, take care and have fun!
@Sillyirishman78
@Sillyirishman78 Жыл бұрын
I was thinking about your comment about the v-shaped bow (front) and was thinking there’s plenty of examples where a more blunt bow (if I could think of a better term!) is used, particularly short range ferries. The troop landing ships used by the army are another example. A benefit of a blunt bow, is you could make it another option for entry/exit of the cars, meaning your boat can approach the ferry in any direction - a real world application, as weather conditions may make reversing (going astern) really difficult and you just want to get the car safely on land! Taking the real world application further in regards to bow design is that the best design depends on your imaginative intent - is it for long or short journeys, as a v shaped is better for the long ones. But I imagine it’s short journeys as I suspect the island is close to land. Probably overthinking things there!

With the width the and hight it feels like it should be double in length. When you first said you're gonna add a yacht I thought it was gonna be half a yacht, like how the Titanic set looks like when you seperate the sections. The design looks great though, especially the top!

Most car ferries are the same on the front and back so they can travel both ways without having to turn around and so the cars can unload and load on both ends. You don't necessarily have to stick to the constraints of the traditional boat shape.
@dylanlewis4949
@dylanlewis4949 Жыл бұрын
I think to make it look less square and bulky, the top floor doesnt need to be the same size as the floor below. You can have a walkway going around the smaller upper cabin, which would be just big enough for the captain and his chair.

A pop of red or other unusual color to break up the stark contrast between white and black. Could work as a special effect to set the look together. Without the other drive the car could just enter the boat from the garage. I would allow for a longer boat. I’m loving this build. 😎 I’m hoping to be inspired to do something custom myself.

considering all the constraints, especially the sizing limits I think it's pretty good. If you had and option to go longer it would have been a more familiar design. Your ship is functional and that's what's important. It's already light years ahead of what I could ever accomplish!

Ya know, Bricksie, I honestly wanted to joke around or mess with you about the way the boat looks, but then I thought to myself, "I kid with him a ton, but i've never messed with him about his building art, maybe that might be to harsh just for a joke?". So in finding that I am still a human being (Yay!), I thought that I might actually just say the following. The first level, the Ferry part that houses the car...Actually looks really well done, and sure, anything can be reworked, or added onto, it is LEGO after all, but you have a great Ferry base. Moving to the second floor. This is not your strongest floor, as you likely know. Something I learned recently when building the black panther boat (You own it too!), is that you can get some really great Angles with hinges and plates! You are like myself bricksie, in that you grew up building Lego with studs facing upwards! The way LEGO originally was. But there is so much you can do if you just remember that you can build with SNOT, and with hinges and sideways plates! I hope this finds you well! Good Luck Mate!

I think it’s a really good build and I really like this idea! You said you want it less than 32 studs long but I think it looks kinda boxy at this length because of the space needed to accommodate the cars. Maybe if you make the boat longer and change the dock to come off the island at an angle you could smooth out some dimensions?

Honestly I don't think it's that bad, I am really impressed with that being your first boat build, it's pretty good, the only thing that makes it a little awkward is maybe the top floor, maybe some hinge bricks to get a more flat wall where the windows are would make it look better, but honestly I really like the build, you had a real challenge with having very specific dimensions to work with and you were able to accommodate for it really well, nice job

If you consider a catamaran hull setup you would take away the problem of making a bow in the short space you have. There are some beautiful real life examples of these maybe the top deck smaller interior space and more decking. As said I think the quarters are a little too tall. Some yachts have sliding roofs over the whole interior think like the fiat 500 roof for example. Good luck good start!!
