@philroberts72383 жыл бұрын
When you were wondering about the vegetation in the first one, Tom, I spotted an Araucaria, otherwise known as a Monkey Puzzle Tree - native to the Chilean Province of Araucaria, which is not entirely coincidental. The second one was in a similar kind of location and with a similar kind of social mix, but without the Chilean flags you would normally get at such an event in Chile - so I guessed it might well be in Argentina. And it's just possible I might have guessed somewhere in the backblocks of Brazil for the third one if I'd thought about it properly. Valetta was an easy one to pinpoint and so were the Greek mountaintop monasteries in a general sort of way. I didn't play along, because there would normally be no point, but I think I would have actually beaten your score on this one occasion - how bizarre!
@Meevious3 жыл бұрын
The monkey puzzles were a great giveaway! There are actually a couple of Araucaria species native to Australia too. It's a Gondwanan genus and most of the surviving species are endemic to New Caledonia! The monkey puzzle is pretty distinctive though - the only two species that can sometimes look a bit like it from a distance are the candelabra tree (Also S. America) and the bunya bunya (NE Australia), but there were enough examples in the panorama to pretty much rule out funny looking examples of those species. =)

@@theAngusmaster101 The bizarre looking ones are monkey puzzles (Araucaria araucaria) and that national park in Chile is their heartland. We do have native Araucaria species in Australia (even the very closely related Araucaria bidwillii, or bunya bunya), but they don't look quite the same. Bunya bunya are typically found naturally at a more northern latitude (QLD and northern NSW), though they do actually grow just fine at any latitude in Australia when artificially dispersed. Their natural method of dispersion is to drop a huge cannonball-like pinecone from so high up that it penetrates into the ground, so not very _dispersy_ unless they're growing on the top of a hill with a hard landing pad at their base. PS Bunya seeds are edible, so standing under a mature bunya bunya in Jan-Feb is the very ultimate definition of fast food, as it will pass through you in a fraction of a second and satiate you quite permanently.

But I didn't want to "cheat" so I stuck with Malta knowing that it was wrong. If I'd actually not bothered to look up the flag, I would have probably gotten a near perfect score, as I would have actually tried to pinpoint it. I guessed Africa for Chile and Brazil, and Texas for Argentina. (The new cars really threw me on that one.) And I guesses Georgia for Greece. For the first one it was either Australia or Chile, correct me if I'm wrong but I think the trees are from the Araucaria family which are mostly found in Chile and Australia (iirc they exist in some other countries too but those aren't streetviewed)

Tom should take his own advice he gave a couple of years ago: Always look at the name of the author at the bottom right. Often you can guess the location by the name

All that kind of meta data or what not makes it a bit boring imo. Working it out on your own is why it's so impressive and fun to watch.

Pretty scummy tactic and not really in the spirit of the game imo

It is a bit cheap though, deducing based on the landscape/people/building alone is more interesting

Damn, you can make anywhere look amazing with a bird's eye view. Let alone an already amazing looking place from the ground.

12:42 could it be you missed the quite substantial river in the background? That might have helped with this one? 19:33 I guess you overlooked the small road in the left upper corner which I think correlates to the dirt road the cars are parked at. But it's always easy when just watching, I first was sure this monestary was in China / Mongolia or something alike 🙈

If you've ever perused the southern tip of South America on google maps or whatever, you'd be able to get a good guess on that first one. The vegetation around there just looks so unique. Straight up looks like a movie set of a dinosaur movie

1 - recognised the trees as monkey puzzle and knew it would be South America but I went the state of Parana in Brazil because I know there are lots of those trees in that area. Oh well points wise not great but better than Australia2 2- thought it looked South American and southish.. the hills and trees looked a bit like Chile and Argentina. I went slightly north of salta which was an okay guess but I should have gone south 3 - going to be australia Africa or Brazil but couldn’t really decide. I ended up backing Brazil and going state of matto Grosso - an area of scrub south of the Amazon. Damn it was north of Amazon !! 4 - easy Valletta, Maltese flag visible 5 - I thought it would be northern Italy or Greece but the mountains looked off for it to be Italy. I ended up guessing near mount olympus which wasn’t horrible. 16116 all up

I could tell it was Chile from the arocaria tree, Chile native National tree , i was really surprised to actually know that, cause it was kinda hard to tell from the low quality. And it slightly looked mediterranean so I thought maybe not Chile.

those pointy trees from the first one were araucarias, and you can see them in patagonia but also a very few even in buenos aires, of course with that forest and mountains it was patagonia

Round 1 - 19 pt! I thought similar to Tom but chose some place slightly closer. Round 2 - 3103 pt - Correct Country (seemed like the cars were well maintained and it seemed like a music fest.) Round 3 - 12 pt - Totally blew this round! Just like Tom! Round 4 - 4999 pt - Which way the cars were driving was the key for me! Round 5 - 1847 pts - Another bad pick... Not an absolute GOD (according to Tom) ~sad emoji~
