Doing stuff like that always makes things feel newer, and cooler. Would do that with rattle cans in the late 70s and early 80s to our bikes when I was a kid. We would get old Huffy and Schwinn cruiser bikes, tear them down, paint, new BMX style bars, different forks, and build them into "scramblers" with cooler paint colors. Kinda a thing back then, before everyone got BMX bikes in the 80s

Nice motivator to finally finish a bike project I've got to paint! A pre-ww2 skip-link 24" wheel single speed. Not an MTB but it is my very first bike that I started riding on at 4yrs old in the early 70's - nothing but gravel and dirt until 3rd grade. Dug it out of my folks barn in Iowa after decades. I'm doing a sort of resto-mod on it since a lot of original parts were too far gone and I'm using period pieces that I would have had access to at the time I would have upgraded it had it not been relegated to barn storage.

So cool Dave! Nice work on the production quality. So cool you are out there being fit and active and sharing it! Man coming out of school I was so all about mountain bikes and bought my first aluminum bike at sams club, its derailer was a mess too. Not sure if I ever got that back on the road again. I know I had another bike, and wow the quality per cost was so low back then. The front shocks seemed trick but they weighed a metric but ton. All that was new in 94 ish though. I was all the time buying junk with potential and repainting it. Especially guitars. Haven't really seen you with anything musical, even taste wise. Though your intro song is badass and maybe like Fu Manchu. I heard my cousin got my S10 running well and took it a few states away to TN! Glad it didn't go all that far. Love those 2nd gen S10s. Though those Nissan's like yours always looked so good. Step dad had one and we used to ride in it a bit. So it's real cool seeing your work on that. Man that Dodge truck is so dang sweet man. No wonder you parted ways with the red ford, that Dodge is super sweet. Saw a rare truck special and that was one of them on it. Cool deal with the head mount stuff. I hadn't realized you hadn't used that much. Man I had a weird thought. I wonder if they have a camera mount like preditors shoulder lazer mount? Might be a good compromise of it not leaving you out of the shots and also seeing what your eyes are doing. Either way, hell of a job. I get intrusive creative thoughts, prolly way off but either way, always enjoying your content.

Nice paint job, Dave👍! It reminds me back in the 90's when I painted my son's BMX bike more like Greg LeMond Team Z color (tri-color). It's possible that chain need a little more tension to cure the shifting problem. You can turn the little screw on the derailleur hanger in to put a little more tension on the chain. It is also possible they installed the wrong chain length or the shift cable came loose. Try to match the chain with the other bike

If you didn’t already figure it out the shifting is probably a cable issue, a hanger alingment issue, or high low screws not set correctly. All pretty simple things to attend to. The Shimano base model hydro brakes are very good for the money. Sram NX or GX derailers and shifters are also very good for the money. Set the tires up tubeless. It’s great for reducing flats, and they tend to grip a little better. Bike looks great.
@thedirtheadshed

@b.s.adventures9421
@b.s.adventures9421 4 ай бұрын
@@thedirtheadshed That makes complete sense. Like you said, hanger alingment is very important. If you still can’t get the shifting dialed, a good quality cable and housing can make a big difference. It’s a pretty cheap repair, upgrade. I only use Shimano 4mm shift housing and stainless steel Shimano shift cables. I do like the jaguar plastic housing caps. They are a little longer than the Shimano and have a little better engagement. There are fancier cables and housing, but no real benefit over what I listed for the extra cost. Take what I say with a grain of salt, but I did work as a bike mechanic for a looong time. Like your paint job. Looks cool.

Mr. Chappelle , thank you for everything you do on your channel. If I may ask you a question. I’ve always wondered can a guy purchase a “budget” mountain bike and upgrade the front and rear wheel bearings to top of the line to massively upgrade the bike? Or do modern mountain bikes not work like that? Thank you again in advance. May God Bless you and your family.
@thedirtheadshed

I’m sure there are ways to upgrade the bearings, but at some point you would probably be money ahead by ordering wheel set that has higher end hubs that are designed with better bearings

Awesome, more MTB content! I buy a lot of random frames to build bikes from, and I’ve really thought about painting them from time to time, but I don’t think I have the patience to do the prep and it don’t work unless you do the prep .

Dave, what weld-thru primer do you use on repairs? I am working on a 67 Mustang and am not sure if there is one that works better or if there is really much difference. You should make a series of vids on painting and prep. You definitely have the skills.

Can we also talk about the fact that you're just putting a bike in the back of a mini truck without having to put it at an angle or anything. Still sad it's getting harder to find long bed small trucks. I guess older is the way to go for that. Also, sick paint job.

Not going to lie didn’t think we were getting a episode this week. I checked at 2 like normal. Anyway I took my nukeproof scout for a little rip yesterday. I got a 150mm for on it a 27.5x2.6. I built it myself. It’s such a fun “aggressive” hardtail I think you’d love it.

Nice job on the paint! And is that a Raceface stem that came stock? It seems like at some point a couple years ago the sizes definitely went up, so I'm glad the small works for you. You spec some new forks for these yet? That's definitely the weakest link. I've had good luck with the RS Judy if you want to keep things cheap. Not a huge fan of the Circus Markhors.

Stick a fork from Ebay on it. Seems like people buy bikes and then upgrade the forks so there are decent oil damped forks that can be had. I bought a Trek years ago and stuck a Tora 302 fork on it from Ebay, upgraded the brakes to discs and the drive train to a 1x7 with half decent Shimano parts. I've been riding it ever since. How is that tiny chain ring with the giant low gear sprocket on the cassette? I usually climb standing up so I don't have gearing that low.
@thedirtheadshed
@thedirtheadshed 4 ай бұрын
The gearing is pretty good. Doesn’t have quite as much range as the trek with the 12 speed though
