I’ve been playing around further with using Custom Shapes in Photoshop. Some of the videos I’ve posted online had a positive reception, but I was asked how do I go about adding colour to the designs. So, I’ve made a quick environment piece to show how, when using photos/textures you can quickly add colour to a design. I hope you find it useful.
If you’re interested in following my work, please check out the links below.
Cheers!

Amazing painting man. One tip though: I think that you should make the silhouette of the big rocks a bit more rough. The edge where the rocks meet the sky is too smooth. Make it more rough and it will look more realistic.

if i have to say it looked really cool when you were using the custom shapes to base an environment off of I thought it was really cool, but then i thought it was to build upon because then it just starts being a series of photo overlays which just ruins it

I found this video on Artstation. Really interesting workflow. I always struggle with getting nice texture and detail in my work but this seems like a really smart way of adding both to your painting. One question though. It would seem to me that it can get quite chaotic with so many layers, especially because most don't have a name. How do you keep order in your scene? How do you keep track of everything?
@davidpagetart
@davidpagetart 7 жыл бұрын
Hi there. In answer to your question, no I don't really have a trick for keeping track of layers - I just kind of know where things are (though I do sometimes get lost). When I first started digital painting, I religiously renamed my layers so I could find things. But, for my own personal work, I eventually found this to be a waste of time. I use lot's textures, merge down layers fairly often, delete ones that don't work - constantly renaming them all was really time consuming. If I'm providing work for a client, I'll label the layers as and where they need it. Sometime's I'll group things sensibly (foreground, mid ground, background, sky, floor etc.) so I can find certain things quicker. Or, in Photoshop, you can change the colour of the layer and find thing's quickly visually. But that's about all I use.

I played around with different Layer Properties in Photoshop - I used Lighten and Darken quite a lot in this image. Play around with them, you get different kinds of results

Idk if you even still read these comments on a 3 year old video, but I'd like to make a suggestion.. It'd be really awesome if you could do tiny animations of this painting.. Like the guy could be off frame and then walk to the edge of the cliff etc. Maybe the sun appears afterwards etc. It's really easy to do in photoshop as it's just playing with opacity levels and setting a key frame. Photoshop even adds in the middle frames if you just set 1 start place. Move the guy to the end, set an end place. I thought that would bring these pieces you make to a little higher level. You're doing great man I'd like to try these custom shapes. 💪❤

Lovely art work! I was curious though. Custom shapes? Did you make the textures that you wrapped around each shape?
@davidpagetart
@davidpagetart 6 жыл бұрын
Hey, thanks for the comment. It's a mix. Some of the shapes come from sketchy paintings made in photoshop. A good chunk of them also come photos. If you check out websites like Photobash.org, you can purchase photo packs and extract certain areas (rock texture, plants, shrubbery, buildings, whatever you want) and use them for the custom shape. It's a useful technique :)

I'm sharing what I do but. I look for a high res picture of mountains, canyons, rocks,... put them in monochrome 2 samples (so black and white no grays, however sometimes having a couple gray values helps) and then just delete either the black or white part. Then save as shape.

why you didn't let this guy pee ??? that would be awesome a good landscape like this with a guy peeing on it xD anyway i liked your process, i'm "good" at painting characters, it's what i like to do, but everytime i hate what i do because my background looks always stupid, i don't like painting landscape and background, i am very bad at this, i don't know if i don't like it because i'm bad or i'm bad because i don't like it... but anyway i really want to get better at this ! Some people say that doing a portrait is more difficult because if one eye is at the wrong place, you'll loss the likeness and it's gonna looks weird, for a landscape, it doesn't matter if one tree is at the right or the left, it makes things easier. i think it's true but landscape is another kind of difficultie that i can't explain. and your video inspired me, a real time painting with comment would be cool !
@davidpagetart
@davidpagetart 6 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the comment. Haha, it was very tempting to leave the guy peeing in this image - but I'm not sure it would have worked overall. I think artists gravitate to certain areas of design because they find different things more natural to them. No matter what you're working with, it all comes down to practise. So stick with it. It'll take time, but it'll also be worth it :)

wouldn't call this painting. more like a collage. rocks look disconnected from the scene because nothing is sculpted here. stuff is just pasted in.
