During the last project I did some filming and the plan was to get done a kind of documentation of how a Custom Snare Drum is made in our workshop. The Snare you see is a 14x8,5" Oak stave shell with custom made hardware.
Take a listen: • ACD Unlimited 14x8,5" ...

That is a beautiful sled design, very well thought out. Spreads the weight over a large area, less likely to rock. Not sure about the rip sawing at the start though, even I was cringing at that and I'm not usually that bothered

Man I just wondering did you make that hardware for the drum on your own with a CNC machine? Is it something you're able to mass produce the hardware? If you know of any good places where I can find some extraordinarily rare or good hardware for passenger in building please let me know

Beautiful job! But why the hybrid hoops?

Thank you. I't's an idea from Bob Gatzen, basically the Die Cast hoop at the bottom should keep the snare wires in control and the tripple flanged hoop at the top offers a wide range for sound and sustain.

Funny. Stewart Copeland recorded all the hits with The Police on a Pearl snare drum (even though he was with Tama) with a die cast hoop on the batter side and a triple flanged hoop on the snare side.

What was the reason for a triple flange top hoop and a die cast on the bottom?

Chris L there’s 2 possible reasons. He likes the way it sounds or he didn’t have 2 of either. I would rule the ladder out. This guy is brilliant. Great work he does.

I finally invested in some mics, so you can also hear it here: kzbin.info/www/bejne/oYisnmCrgLGKY8k or in the album "Kingdom" of my band DYNARCHY. For example in the Song "Apple of Eden". The deep snare is this exact one but recorded in a proper Studio. (the higher pitched Snare is 13x5" ACD as well. In one song I also use a 12x5,5" ACD Snare with the beautiful wires in the "classical" look)

Great drum and build video- By the way, where did you get the parts to make the lugs? I love that idea.
@ACDUnlimited
@ACDUnlimited 4 жыл бұрын
The parts for the lugs are "hand" machined on a lathe along with most other parts I used to use on my drums.

Great job man! On what angles did you cut the shell? What is width and depth of snare bed?
@ACDUnlimited
@ACDUnlimited 4 жыл бұрын
20 segments, 9° each. Snare bed is about 3-4mm deep, 70mm flat with a smooth transition to the rest of the bearing edge

I'm hoping to make rollers like that for my remake of the interior milling jig. Beautiful. I'm just going to use large wooden dowels though.

you could always turn cylinders on a lathe then cover them with a inner tube from a mountain bike Or use ink rollers that printers use for doing woodcut prints

What happens if you don't router the inside? Does it affect the sound?
@yolanc3876
@yolanc3876 5 жыл бұрын
yes a lot, sound waves will bounce all around inside the drum you won't be able to have a great sound
@isaacdavis3863

i have made a few snares without routing the inside. I actually think they sound great. I feel like they have more sustain, and can be pretty ringy, but i like that.

@@yolanc3876 The wavelength of sound is way bigger than the size of those edges, so it son't be that big pf a difference, the wood's vibrations make more difference than that of the air
