Custom Spiral Staircase Built
Hi everyone,
in this video I am sharing the way I build spiral staircases. This is a bottom half of a double, 26', spiral staircase. The second half is placed on top of this one during installation.
Since I am a small shop, this is a single person build and I only used basic metal fabrication tool.
I built this staircase during January of 2019. It took me about a week to build each half, and a day to install. I built a total of 5 spiral staircases in the last 5 years.
I hope you'll excuse the lack of forging in this video.
Thanks for watching,
Tim

Thanks for making this video. You sure know your trade; 8 years of building spiral stairways! I've found "experience" is usually expensive, and or painful. I've built "conventional" stairs, but never anything as demanding as spiral stairs. I like to have a look at videos like yours, cause I always learn something every time. A good tradesman makes the job look easy. I tip my hat to you.

You can build a mountain by putting pebbles on top of each other. The challenge is to move the mountain after you built it. Just kidding. The staircase weighs aroun a ton when it's done. I have a strong "A" frame with a 1.5t hoist to move.it around the shop and we used boom forklifts to install them.

Thanks for watching! I draw up everything on the computer. I am using Google SkatchUp, which is free to download, to work out all the details. There are certain criteria that you have to follow to be code compliant. I measure the elevation, and devide it by the maximum raise (9-1/2" max) to see the minimum number of treads. I adjust the numbers accordingly. I normally have 12 to 14 treads per revolution.

I'm pricing my first spiral staircase and the thing that I have the most concerns about is the making of the handrail. I see that you made the curves in only one dimension and then made small adjustments with the ratchets. Might be trying that one!
@DesertOwlForge
@DesertOwlForge 2 жыл бұрын
Thanks for reaching out. Yes that's how I did the handrail the way you described. But there are a few trick to it. When you bend the tube you have to bend it in small increments making sure it fits the curvature of the spiral. You also have to work in sections and match them up nicely. It's easier said than done. Good luck with your project.

what schedule pipe did you use for the handrail? In the middle of a similar project and the hand rail is being... difficult.
@DesertOwlForge
@DesertOwlForge 4 жыл бұрын
It always is. That's the hardest part I use 1-1/2" x 0.065" round tubing for my handrails. Any thicker would make it real hard to bend it, but any thinner would make the material buckle. Unless you fill it with sand.

@DesertOwlForge
@DesertOwlForge 3 жыл бұрын
Thanks! I don't quite get your question. Stringers are the components of staircases that connect the treads together. Technically speaking, spiral staircases only have one stringer and that is the center post. Can you phrase the question differently so I can answer it?

The rise (upward distance between treads) can not be grater than 9-1/2" as per building code. The picket lengths vary since the treads ate horizontal and the handrail is at an angle, but there are the same (3 different lengths) at each tread. I hope this answers your question.

There is no set degree. You have to calculate the # of treads fom the height and diameter. The building code sets certain parameters that you have to meet. In the case of the staircase in the video there are 12 tread per 1 full rotation, but I have done 14 as well .

@DesertOwlForge
@DesertOwlForge 3 жыл бұрын
No, I don't. I had no drawings. I did a wire model in google SkatchUp and that's about it. I don't have the cutting list for the parts and the templates for the treads any more. I never keep them because all staircases are unique to the situation at hand. They all differ slightly. Floor height and diameter will determine the tread count and the actual rise, which has to be no larger than 9.5" and there are several different criteria that you have to follow if you want to be code compliant. I basically build.them out of my head.
@elcorsel2183
@elcorsel2183 3 жыл бұрын
DESERT Owl could you tell me the distance between the steps?
@DesertOwlForge
@DesertOwlForge 3 жыл бұрын
To comply with the building code, rise (the distance between the step heights) should be no larger then 9-1/2" and the deviation should be no grater than 1/8". You have to measure the finished floor height and divide is by the number of steps. You should adjust the number of steps to fit within those parameters. I hope this answers your question.
