I bought an OS Max 65 Marine engine off eBay a year or so ago and it was in that shape too I will send you some pics.It took a lot of cursing and swearing and elbow grease but was able to get her restored. Good luck Sir patience is key!

In over a half century of messing with model airplanes and their engines, it never ceases to amaze me how people will spend good money for an engine and then treat it worse than a cheap garden tool.

Sad to see a nice engine neglected like this. Out of my 20+ good plane engines I have had only 4-6 that weren't worth fixing (so far) but they were all mine. You must have a lot of patience.

Im sorry but I broke out laughing,I know its not funny to find an engine in that condition but in all my years of doing small engine I have never seen a cylinder in that bad of shape. I cannot believe that! What I mess. I have fixed weed eaters, lawn mowers, snowmobiles,two stroke engines of every kind and usually they get stored in sheds,garages, out back of barns and never have I seen such a mess. Not just the top end, but the bottom end! OMG! I sm suprised you got the piston out. what a mess.

Dave, I brought a OS 120 SP in 1991. It ran great on the test stand, but in the plane (Goldberg Ultimate) when it was rolled over the engine would pour smoke out and go rich stall and Dead stick. I sent this engine in for repair several times even receiving a new one, all of them would display this go rich problem. Finally I was told the Super charger seals would have to be almost to the point of not creating enough boost to run correctly. It would do this also on the test bench when flipped over engine running? Any idea what was the problem as it got me out of model aviation in discuss. I enjoy your posts very much and admire your professional work on these engines. Thank you Dave.

Please clarify a few things. What does "when it was rolled over" mean? I have never owned a 120 Super charged engine so I have no experience with that particular engine. I would not have gotten out of flying due to that silly engine. I would have bought a less complex engine and enjoyed the hobby for many years.

David McIntire whenever the plane did a barrel role or inverted flying. I even had a friend tape it on VHS which was sent in with the engine displaying this going rich problem, if I could only find this tape to post. I have over 300 VHS tapes. Before I built the Ultimate I had and still have a Goldberg anniversary clipped wing cub with a OS 91 surpass. I have skis, floats, and wheels for any type of flying which provided me many hours of enjoyment in model aviation. My first 4 stroke was an Enya 60 which I had to replace all the bearings in after one season of flying, yes I learned the hard way of not keeping enough after run oil in the engine after flying! Thank you for your response David.

David McIntire A fellow club member was also building his second Ultimate bipe when I was building mine he chose a OS 120 with pump and I went with the supercharged 120 (big mistake) After all these years would you say the diaphragms in the pump and regulator are dried out now preventing it to run properly? Thank you for your time sir.

Looking forward to seeing part 2 of this. I've got a 46-4C that I picked up used that is in the same shape except for the locked piston. I'm interested to find out more info on where to get parts because mine is going to need new timing gears as they are missing teeth.
@TheWarbird724 жыл бұрын
I didn't see a video of the engine running. Did you get it together?
@ringofthebrave6 жыл бұрын
The good thing is that you will bring this engine back to life. I assume the last operator of the engine was unable to start it and stored it flooded with unburned fuel. Any afterrun oil won't help in this case. I repaired an Enya 46-4C that was in about the same condition (except the locked piston). Spent a lot of time for cleaning but now it runs again.

At least I'm getting pay for my efforts..... I have about 2.5 hours into this already and it isn't even 100% disassembled.
@8ackbar6 жыл бұрын
David, a part of me died when you removed the crank case and showed the inside.
@dmrcflyr26 жыл бұрын
LOL. These Enya 4 strokes require special care to keep the timing case area in good shape for a long term storage. But never in my wildest dreams did I expect to see the inside of the combustion chamber like that. Even hours later, freezing, heating, soaking with CLR, I still cannot get the piston free from the sleeve. It might be more money than the owner is willing to invest to get this engine running again.
@8ackbar6 жыл бұрын
Yeah, I have the .80. During long term storage, I flood the CC with ATF4 and set the engine up on the rear cam case. Last time I had the engine apart, the cams and gears were shiny.

WOW you got some GKW in there... God Knows What!
@DBJr19806 жыл бұрын
Man, that is the nastiest engine I've ever seen. I'm even surprised you got the piston out. That sucker looked like it was seized up tighter than a drum.
@toralfcross38192 жыл бұрын
That really looks like the crap you find inside a very old glow fuel tank that has been sitting full of fuel and solidified and I can't imagine not checking the tank but maybe somebody filled up a crummy tank and ran that junk through that engine
@Spanky201886 жыл бұрын
Have you ever tried soaking them in Metal Rescue? The stuff does wonders.... great video
@bryanc33145 жыл бұрын
Dave i had a engine that looked exactly like that i had it on my basement floor i forgot about and a had a flood about 3 months later i was gonna use it in a plane and that's what it looked like after breaking it down

Try putting the piston and liner in a jar of PB blaster then run it in the ultrasound.
@1unaffiliated16 жыл бұрын
I was going to suggest the PB Blaster also, it made a believer out of me...Penetrates rust better than WD-40, the ole standard...
@dmrcflyr26 жыл бұрын
I have never used WD-40 on any engine. Worthless stuff. I have CLR and it freed the piston and sleeve.
@1unaffiliated16 жыл бұрын
Cool deal...Yeah, my dad is old school(Near 80 yrs old), loved the WD...Somebody turned me to PB, I haven't looked back since...Try it next time on something rusty, its Awesome stuff...Sometimes works in 5 minutes, but for best results let it sit overnight...
@marvinwooster2236 жыл бұрын
Where in the world will you get parts for this engine , as it looks as if the the piston/sleeve is toast ? It should be interesting to see it run ! Hang in there !
@dmrcflyr26 жыл бұрын
Parts I would order from Ken Enya in Japan.
@erichiles95684 жыл бұрын
That's how you get dirt cheap

Well, I certainly hope so..... It isn't looking good at this point. May need new piston and ring among all other parts required.

Yes, this engine is in bad shape. I am done messing with it for the day. I'm getting too irritated to keep working on it.
