Remember when Dan Savage started a campaign to convince LGBT teens that "it gets better"? It's a noble cause, but sadly there's still a huge subset of the population out there for whom it will only get worse...

Hear you, brother. Got out last year after 3 year stint. After finishing 72 minute call with a customer ("Exactly sir, Shift key is above the Ctrl key. I mean control... C-O-N-T-R-O-L.") I got several pats on the back in the office for not going ballistic in first 10 minutes. That was the moment in time when I realized it's time to get out before I become an office shooter. No human being should be that calm.

What age kids have you been working with? I had a 10 year old threaten to sue me because we said orders processed in 24 hours and his order wasn't at his door the next morning. Forget that Mom and Dad paid ground shipping and they lived across the country. I also had a 9 year old continuously put his 5 year old cousin on the phone so this kid would cry in my ear for 10 minutes about his order never arriving...could never find the order number. Also had a 16 year old get "disappointed" because he placed a high dollar order, and his parents called us to cancel the order. Apparently, even though he used the card without permission, we shouldn't have cancelled his order because it was his private account and he didn't authorize the cancellation. Call Centers are fun.

some of the comments i've seen make me sick "oh you decided to take this in college so you deserve that for thinking that this will get you a good paying job" "suck it up, jobs aren't supposed to be fun they're supposed to be work", you people are so full of bullshit it makes me want to vomit, it doesn't MATTER what these people did in college or that they don't enjoy their job, that wasn't the issue being addressed, it's that people who work in these jobs are abused by customers all the goddamn time and they are FORCED to grin and bear it, i don't give a fuck what you think about their decisions of what they did in school, NO ONE has the right to abuse someone just because they're in the service industry.

supereece9000 Customer Service workers need to realize that their job is only there as a place holder until they find something else. Join the military. That's what I did. I learned a trade when I was in. Never settle. If you have a job in customer service, work hard to get out of it. Once you do, tell your boss to fuck off and go start your career. Even if it takes a few years, don't just fucking sit there forever! Too many people just stop trying. Fuck working customer service for tips or minimum wage! It's not worth it. I would applaud everyone if they were to suddenly walk out on their dead end job all at once.
@supereece9000
@supereece9000 9 жыл бұрын
CriticalThinking At what point is insulting someone who works in the service industry a justification? whether they choose to work in customer service as a career or as a simple place holder isn't the issue that's being addressed. It's the fact that because these people work in customer service many people seem to think that it's a free pass to abuse them because they are forced to be accommodating to the customer which is not right now matter what position you might be in.
@druidic6

supereece9000 Where the hell did I say it was okay to treat customer service people like shit? Answer: I didn't. I'm nice to customer service people. You should really read the post before you reply. I advised people to leave customer service jobs because people are mean. And do you want to know why? It's because the bosses won't stand up for their employees! They actually encourage people to be mean to their own employees. That's why I highly encourage people to tell their bosses to fuck off when quitting.

I had this guy who I didn't know wanted two separate transactions when I started ringing. He was already acting like an impatient pain so I politely told him it would be faster for someone else to ring him up while I wait for the manager to void the transaction. When somebody else got to the open register first, he yelled "Jesus CHRIST!" and literally THREW all of his stuff down on my counter. A big can of Arizona tea fell and landed on my foot, where I still have a permanent bruise. Then he pitched another fit because my manager wasn't there in an instant. At least he didn't have the balls to ask for the tea back. What killed me is he had a kid with him, maybe ten or eleven. The boy couldn't have been more embarrassed about his dad's behavior.

Once I had a woman scream at me for telling her she must come around to the front service desk less than two metres away to pay for her cigarettes (and the rest of her groceries because she wanted everything on one receipt) because it's government legislation and they physically won't scan at any other register either because of it. She continued to scream at me about everything, including how I was packing her bag, saying that she can get cigarettes from any register anywhere else, even though like I said, it's government legislation and at the time had been in place for over a year. When she almost left her paid for cigarettes behind, and I kindly went and gave them to her, she screamed at me again. My coworkers couldn't believe I kept being nice to her. Sometimes I hate working at the check outs, but then once I had my boss yell at me for something that was totally unneccessary while I was standing at the check outs and when the next customer I served saw I was clearly upset and crying, they stopped me and spoke to me for a good few minutes to cheer me up, and the waiting customers did not mind. It's the wonderful customers that make it rewarding to work where I am.

I work at a call center, I'm 18. Taking customer calls is really overwhelming, since they can't see your face, and they're not seeing yours, it is very easy for a customer to scream at you the meanest things ever. I had a nervous collapse today, I just don't want to be screamed at and offended. Voice tone can be violent and aggressive, and gosh, it hurts. I literally have to put my customers in hold for thirty seconds to shed a few tears, then go back to the call. Yes Mr. Customer, thank you for waiting, please go ahead and keep screaming at me.

My experience was a little different; I worked in the grocery department of Publix Supermarkets and I would have to constantly bight my tongue when people would think that telling me Win-dixie carries something we don't somehow gives me the power to make it magically appear in the store right then and now.

William Cronshaw I've decided that anyone who treats an employee of ANY "service" industry (waiter, cashier, hotel clerk, maid, daycare provider, NOT a 'blue-collar' job, etc) like dog crap, is not a good person. If you can't treat a 'servant' with human decency and dignity, then you are a bully and I want nothing to do with you. Every now and then, I post this on my FB, and some of my "friends" will say derogatory things about service employees. Fastest way to get unfriended. :P

The sad truth is that it'll never get better. The only thing corporate CEOs care about is making as much money as possible, so they cater to every whim of the people who shop in their stores. "Good" customers who follow rules and are nice get nothing, while "Bad" customers who whine and complain about everything to get their way get everything they want. Logic dictates that when people see "Bad" behavior being rewarded, it'll encourage "Bad" behavior.

My brother once had a customer throw an epic-level tantrum because she slid her card too early and he prompted her to slide it again. She went off, screaming how he was stealing her identity so he could kidnap her children. When she stopped to take a breath, he yelled back, "If I was going to steal someone's identity, why the heck would I want to be YOU!?" He got a final warning write-up for that one, he said it was worth it.

So true, so very true. And people are so self entitled it becomes down right obnoxious. I work in a meat dept of a store and seriously some of the customers get ridiculous. Which only increases when holidays come. Three days before Thanksgiving and Christmas Eve become hell on earth. We're understaffed majorly in the department leaving me and at most two other clerks through the whole day alone in the department asides from the butchers. Some of the customers during the week before thanksgiving DEMAND, not ask/request, a turkey at a set weight. For those that don't know, hens range from about 7-13-ish lb and toms (male turkey) range mostly from 16(ish)-24 lb. so trying to find a frozen turkey in the trailer end of a semi truck is HELL! I've almost broke my forearm, I've sprained an ankle and twisted my wrist, almost popped out my elbow and shoulder from their joints all to find the 'perfect' turkey for customers that more than less are ungrateful and annoyed with the weight, and heaven help us if I can't find the right turkey from the specific brand they want. And to those people brands mean the world so if I find that rare 14/15 lb turkey but it's the wrong brand that's just the worst thing I could ever do. I'll admit I once was one of those people that thought retail would be somewhat easy but boy was I wrong. So not paid enough to deal with half the shitty customers I get. There are a handful of nice people but sadly the shitty ones out number them.

Ughh yes. 10 years of hospitality/customer service and the thing I can't stand is that there is no repurcussions for these horrible customers.The 5% who have no problem using an aggressive tone, eye rolling at you, answering a call halfway through a transaction, don't stop their conversation as you try to serve, pace and huff audibly when you are busy with another customer etc etc If you try stand up for yourself or match their shrill tone with a defensive one then oh here come the reviews on yelp/trip advisor etc for all to see. Just smile, thank them and quietly envision them falling down the stairs.

I once had a family when I worked at Taco Bell who told me that they wanted the large drinks in their combo and then got angry when they found out that the frozen drinks that they wanted instead would cost extra. They called me a horrible customer service worker and called my manager over, who forced me to give them both drinks for free. What they would do with those, I do not know. Then, when they went to pay, the guy handed me his (broken) credit card. I tried to straighten it out so that I could actually scan the magnetic strip without further damaging the card, and the damn guy yelled at me. Because I was going to "break his card." I hate to inform you sir, but your card was already broken.

The company I work for is bullshit. Someone can come in screaming at us to give them cash back on a return when they paid with a card, an action that is against our policy. We have to give them their way so we don't "upset the customer." I have worked for them for about 14 months and haven't gotten any kind of pay raise or recognition for my loyalty. Instead, my hours are being slashed in half. (Mind you, I have consistently and efficiently worked my butt off with a great attitude.) As much as I want a new job, there's no certainty I'll be happier somewhere else. This job motivates me to get a bachelor's degree because there's no way in hell I'm doing this shit for the rest of my life.

As a waitress, my rudest most difficult customers are entitled old people. "I'm old so I deserve everything" "I won't tip more because you should get a real job" "I eat here every week, you should bend the rules for me" Young people are the best tippers and are most polite, as they can more likely relate to your position and are more understanding.

It depends on the type of store you work in and if you have competent managers. Competent management makes a world of difference when it comes to dealing with abusers. I worked in a well known chain retail that was right in front of the entitlement office. We braced ourselves, every first of the month for those who thought they were entitled. Not to say everyone on government handouts were bad, a lot of them were like anyone else. Get in, get their stuff, and get out. But it was that time of month when the worse seem to come out of the wood work. Management was incompetent. So most of these people ended up sticking around for a long time. One in particular was only kicked out when he started to ram carts into random customers - after almost a year of verbal abuse I had to endure while working the snack bar - the times he had intentionally caused damage just because he thought it was funny I had to clean it up. I did finally snap and told him that he will die a lonely old man and no one would care. At least I didn't get fired from that. Then I worked in the garden center of a well known home improvement chain. Even the grumpiest of customers were in a good mood. Plants have that way with people, I guess. Management didn't let scammers get away with anything. It was retail bliss compared to that other store. Granted there were still problem customers, but I think I only had one or two that were viscous.

Yes, but I needed the credentials because I'd spent most of my grade-school education in American public schools. And hadn't been able to study Swedish for years by the time I graduated high school. But my conversational Swedish was excellent considering I hadn't actually ever lived in Sweden up until that point.

It does remove every vest age of faith in the human race and leave you bereft of any hope for the future. Only one plus! You will develop a wonderful sense of humour which gives you an incredibly strong personality.

The sad part is that the worst customers (in my field of work) are the so called "adults" over 30. They bitch, they moan, they threaten and make a huge fuzz over NOTHING. Kids and teenagers are all smiles, and if they act cheeky then it's most likely all in good fun.

I've spoken to people who valet. I've heard stories from totaling a brand new Lambo to lunch meat under the floor mats. The common thing they do, if you're one of those horrible customers, is floor it and immediately put your car into park...something that will not immediately affect your car.

Ohh yeah, much worse. I only wish they filmed even MORE people who work in the Customer Service Industry. The stories would be infinite. Like the lady who screamed her head off at me for not having a product in stock, accused me of being one to TELL her it was in stock (HUH?) and then being all super sweet when I brought her the product from the back of a department that wasn't even mine and BEING OFF THE CLOCK from a long night's work and merely on my way out the door when she lashed out at me in the first place. Vile, wretched people!

I just want to say...I'm glad I don't have as many co-workers I need to rely on for my job to work. I work as a rentals delivery person. I drive for around 4-6 hours a day, if I take my time. It gets worse. I deliver rugs and linens. Yup, that means I pick up the dirty crap. Oh, it gets worse. I got sick for a couple weeks because of something I breathed in while picking up rugs from the dirtiest place in town. I'm just glad I haven't picked up anything that will completely destroy me. I haven't been sick since then, I can only thank my extremely healthy immune system for developing and immunity to whatever it was that had me barely able to breathe/see. It kind of gets worse with my job when you get another job stacked onto it...at student minimum wage - I've been out of school for 5 years. I'm not a student! I've been a shining beacon in my community for being a great customer service representative. I make ALL of my customers happy. I worked at two fast food places, three big franchise retail stores, and another cleaning service, and this job has been the nicest in terms of having decent customers. The worst customer I've had since working at this job, has been the manager for a low-budget motel. He really should have picked his fight with the right person, because I only made him feel like an idiot for picking on someone who's only job is to deliver the goods and pick up the dirties. I politely told him, "Hold on, you really need to speak to my boss about this, because I can't order you more linens we don't have here right now, and you're just going to have to wait until the dirties you sent in today are cleaned for me to deliver them. Also, my direct supervisor could hike up the gas bill on this delivery because it would be only for you." He quickly apologized, realizing that I was also the one who charged all of the billing for the business. I could easily make the change myself with my supervisors approval. I only need to depend on four cleaners/folders in order for my main job as a driver to be fulfilled. At least it's better than having to rely on flaky fast-food co-workers who always called in sick on a Friday because they're really going to a party. If one of my co-workers skips out on work for a day, I'm the fastest at folding where I work, so it only take me an hour to do what one of them does in an hour and a half if I need to start early. Wait, in case someone wants to take my job because the customers are nice - it gets worse. You can't get overtime, and you sometimes have to work over sixty hours in one week in order to get the job done. Yup, 40% of the hard work I do goes to the bloody government. I can't wait for the boss to scramble when he needs to hire three new people when I'm heading back to school. So I have three jobs in one, driving, stock maintenance (if we have it), book keeping (and billing), and folding if the business is desperate (or I pull off the once-a-month miracle of blowing through a normal eight hours of my usual pace within five, yes I obey all traffic laws). If you're not doing my job for the cheapest employer in the world, just think about how great it is to not have to deal with people's literal shit like I do on a daily basis. Have a great day everyone!

I had a lady start yelling at me for waiting in my line for a 30 minutes, asking why did it take so long to give out sodas (that's all we sold at that specific kiosk) and that she shouldn't even be charged for one. That's when the couple behind her said "we got in line at the same time you did and it hasn't even been 5 minutes." And basically told her off for me. That couple got free drinks. Thought I'd share a story with a happy ending.

I work as a Customer Service Specialist at my store and have dealt with a lot of difficult people. From ones who want the same price of an item that is online, to someone saying that I'm cheating them out of money when they don't have a receipt and it has a clearance sticker on it, to people throwing heavy items at one of my service desk girls. Yes it can get worse then that, I agree. But there are also those that really make our day, by how kind and understanding they are.

I worked in a callcenter where the PBX system was not locked down, so you could arbitrarily route calls. I would keep phone numbers and names of bad customers, block my number, call one, curse at him, get him really pissed, immediately put him on hold, knowing that he would want the last word, so he would stay on. I would then call another one while the first was on hold, do the same, pull the first one in on a threeway call and mute myself to enjoy the fireworks. Epic win...

I have 6 years of experience in customer service, both in food service and retail. Yes, there are some really crappy people, and yes, I've wanted to pull my hair out or even cry at times. But it all feels worth it when I'm able to make a customer happy. You want a customer to treat you like a human being? It helps to see them as a human being too. They can tell whether you see them as a unique person or just customer #87.

I'm not a whiny hipster--I've done customer service for about 30 years. It isn't all I do for my current company and I would say about 75% of my customers are really nice. However, the ones that aren't are the ones we REALLY remember. Some are still providing me with laughs to this day. If you have never done this job (and I'm not saying you haven't) don't call us whiny. Besides, who doesn't whine about their job? It does make my life interesting, though. I always have a story to tell.

Working in customer service for more than a decade means I have dealt with MORE than my fair share of rude, unreasonable and downright annoying people so I feel for anyone who has been there as well. That being said, having experience being both a customer and a customer service rep, I know good quality customer service and what to expect and what not to expect on both sides of the fence. That gives me a more balance perspective than someone who has NEVER had to serve people......
