Customer States Klon KTR is Not Working | Charge Pump and TL072 replaced FIXED!

I recently was tasked with repairing this Klon KTR for a good friend. It appears to have been a victim of the wrong input voltage.

Thanks for the video.. I fried my od820 about a year ago and it did the samething (no sound but did turn on) I had a new max1044 but wasn't sure if that was the problem. After watching this I swapped it out and it worked. Thanks again 🙂

Definitely need to use some flux on your solder braid to suck up that solder. It works as long as the iron is hot enough. Much easier to use hot air to remove and replace components, but it is something you need to practice at and getting the temperature and air flow just right can be difficult. But _flux is your friend_ with or without hot air.

I was hoping to see you using the right tools for SMT, because I don't have any experience with it myself. But you managed to get it to work with the old through-hole style soldering iron and desoldering braid. Nice!

Thank you!!! I do have a Weller hot air tool as well as a vacuum desoldering tool but I chose to not use them to show it can be done other ways that might be more available. Thank you for recognizing that :-)

Thank you for your kind words! Those are said to be 1N34A germanium diodes. They measured .30fV on my Proster DMM. A good alternative is stompboxparts.com/semiconductors/1n34a-germanium-diode/ and stompboxparts.com/semiconductors/d9e-nos-soviet-germanium-diode/

Many people don't run the gain high enough on their Klon to start clipping, so the diodes don't really matter that much for them. Similarly , many people set their King of Tone to be "clean boost" (no clipping diodes in the feedback loop) on both sides, so only op amp clipping is possible. If you also power it with 18V, then you can get some hefty volume boost without clipping. You still get the equalization curve that boosts mid frequencies, with tons of headroom.

I have an AnalogMan King Of Tone pedal which I managed to damage by unplugging my guitar while running a couple of gain pedals into the KoT while it was also turned on. The transient pop was such a high level that it damaged one of the op amps, killing one side of the pedal. Fortunately I had a replacement NJM 4580 and I just swapped out the damaged op amp. Socketed op amps for the win! I also have tried a number of op amps in both sides of the pedal, and decided to use a Burr-Brown OP2134 in the yellow channel in boost mode because of its smoother, less spitty distortion tone.
