Husband and I borrowed his mother’s car once years ago when we visited, and the smell of gasoline was so strong we thought there was a fuel leak. When we checked the car over, we discovered two full gas cans in the back. But instead of the locking gas caps, she had the pour spouts on them, covered with aluminum foil. She was worried about running out of gas, while living in a city with gas stations everywhere. She was an educated, intellectually curious woman, but lacked common sense. We gave her a stern talk about safety when we got home, and removed the gas cans at least until she could locate the locking caps for them. My mother worried about the same thing, but dealt with it by always topping up the tank at the halfway point, so I suggested that to her. She passed away several years later, but from a stroke, not suffocation by gas fumes at least.

Did you stop to think that maybe they just couldn't afford the shop labor rate to fix it? I highly doubt they immediately took to the highway on a 1200 mile vacation trip... ffs... They probably just did that to limp it home where they will either park it for good or try to fix it themselves. People need to get out of this mentality of, "if there's a problem, call the cops!" No, you don't have the right to violently punish people for not having enough money to buy a decent car or to fix their old junker. Being poor isn't a crime.

You would be suprised. For my last semi trailer new calipers for the disks on it, you were paying around $2200 a pop new. And ive heard of them being stolen off trailers and sitting trucks before. I could see them stealing them off a car if they are easy to get off while they go after a cat converter for example. Even if you cant resell them or dont have a shady shop willing to pass them off as new. They are a good chunk of metal and likely worth a few bucks as scrap.

After rebuilding, I had a 425hp 425ft/lb beast that once spun a cast iron manhole cover off and sent it a block down the alley. I thought I had broken a leaf spring when the rear end dropped 8". But I was too busy shifting when the mechanical throttle linkage stuck WFO until I could shut off the key. That was one fun car. Here in European countries we have the one or two year car check. Here in the Netherlands every year and in Germany every two year. When it is not checked, you get your fine automatically at home.....so when the year is almost over, you get a letter from the Rijksdienst voor Wegverkeer (RDW) a month before the car needs its new check up. When two months after the expire date youd car is not checked at a RDW-recognised check up station, you get your fine. So you know now that almost all cars are very safe here. Good for everybody. Mechanic shops should have the right to not let the customer leave if the car is in a state that makes it just plain unsafe to drive. Seeing these and hearing "The customer declined all repairs and drove home" is making me feel things I shouldn't be feeling!

Super mario sound effect from the A/C is a partially clogged expansion valve, or a viscous fluid like too much compressor oil flowing through the lines... I got a 2002 Tahoe, and the rear A/C makes that noise, sounds like dolphins or sirens when the A/C is running.

I went to a garage to get one thing fixed... they came back with 12 things that 'needed' to be fixed _immediately._ I drove away with no repairs conducted, fixed 8 of 12 items myself within 2 days (6 were very minor - filters and the like), had another 3 repaired at other garages not trying to rip me off. 1 item, the *ORIGINAL* issue, was actually misdiagnosed and took a year to finally pin down. Had it repaired in 3 hours. Original garage? A dealership, of course!

These incidents where customers decline repairs. Especially the dangerous ones. It should be law that these vehicles get reported to the DMV and a mandatory safety inspection be conducted in which if it doesn't pass the car doesn't get to access roads anymore. I understand stuff can be expensive but you could easily kill someone if your suspension gives out or your brakes stop working etc.

I find it stupid that people go in for a specific repair and then dont have it done. Why did you go in the first place? “Brake pedal feels soft” “its this mile of tubing” “okay, dont fix it” like wtf, that cant be a case of getting it diagnosed and then diy-ing it
@rcfalcon56MkII
@rcfalcon56MkII 11 ай бұрын
I can understand declining repairs if you can indeed DIY or know someone who can, but taking an unsafe car on a road trip is unconscionable. This not only endangers those in the car, but everyone on the road. The level of stupidity shown is mind blowing.
