To keep from having too much air in the system, after everything is back together, fill the reservoir and turn the steering wheel back and forth from stop to stop with the wheels off the ground BEFORE starting the vehicle, that will purge 95% of the air out of the system and keep from having any P/S whine from excessive air.

One day at the auto auction (70s or 80s) this GM front wheel drive car, probably a Citation, was maneuvering, backing into a parking space. There was a pinhole in the power steering hose, and every time the steering wheel was turned hard, pressure would increase and a mist would spray out the front of the car, hitting the hot exhaust, and throwing a tongue of flame four feet out in front of the car.

I'm an older guy but when I worked in a high school in a garage my boss would refuse to work on cars with rust like this. He got burned too many times with bolts snapping off in components that then had to be replaced. It also took a lot longer to unfreeze every bolt. Customers would get angry.

Now I don't feel so bad after trying to get a loose belt tensioner bolt on my 2003 Corolla back tight; little workroom, not long enough wrenches, and needing almost 3 hands in a half-hand space to line the tensioner back up and start the bolt. At least I finally gave up and called the shop after trying to MacGyver a way for a couple of hours; CSW has way more tools and experience, and even he had a struggle to do his job. And now for a CSW Moment: "And yes, that was a Giggity!"

Damn, that was hard. I had trouble with my gen 1 Honda CR-V rack replacement, but not that much trouble. I had to drop the exhaust, disconnect the driveshaft to the rear and drop the front diff, which meant draining the transmission. But that was not as difficult as your job. Steering racks suck. If you're going to tackle one, you have to stock up on patience and keep your cool. You seem to have an abundance of both.

This job only pays like 2.6 hours under warranty. Ask me how I know 🙃. I'm not sure if this only applies to the third gen tacos but I remove the passenger side rack bolt first which will allow you tilt the rack towards the front of the vehicle, and then that will give you just enough room to squeeze out the driver's side bolt

@holton3452 жыл бұрын
@ 9:50 - YES! I know your pain! On my 2003 Jeep Wrangler you cannot remove the driver side motor mount because something is in the way (PS pump, AC compressor, something - I can't remember off hand) and you have to cut the bolt off, then install a new one backward and put the nut on behind the offending engine accessory. I hate engineers, who are so shortsighted as to be freaking blind!
@markh.66872 жыл бұрын
It's worse with newer ones; some put the engine on the frame rails/frame, then build the car around it. Engineers: "Maintenance? Repairs? What, us worry?"
@ShabaaUkelele2 жыл бұрын
Why taking out the ac compressor, draining all ac gas therefore, when you can just undo the engine mount on one side and you can lift the whole engine a bit? Much easier and cheaper and less time consuming?

I always wonder how do you make sure when you put on steering shaft that the new rack has the wheels straight as possible with your steering wheel. Does the new rack come positioned 'straight'/dead center by default? And you just need to mark the shaft at dead center as well just in case you rotate it when struggling to separate it from old rack?
@customerstateswhat2 жыл бұрын
The old rack you set to straight, when removed place next to new one and adjust accordingly. You can eye ball it but when it goes on the alignment rack you will see how good you really are.

The newer breed of car engineers design the engine on a computer, then have it made and installed in the car. Now the engineer sees his creation for the first time. Now he thinks, how can I make this difficult for the customers to service. Then is when he puts on his thinking cap and proceeds to make life difficult for all of us. His first course in uni is customer dissatisfaction.
