Neat. On the very first computer I ever used (a 486), the logo would smoothly fade out at the end of the POST screen. I was quite dismayed that no other machine I came across would do this.
@bitsundbolts Жыл бұрын
I had one like this as well! And I do remember that the fade-out was quite pleasing! Shame that later BIOS versions did away with this little extra!
@dolphhandcreme Жыл бұрын
It seems that older Award BIOS variants (=4.51) use graphicsmode and support real 16color bitmaps but removed the fadeout effect, because it would, depending on the logo, fade out the whole screen.
@NSHG Жыл бұрын
@@dolphhandcreme I had 4.51 fade as well. You're more likely to find fading EPA 4.51 on early i430 chipsets, VIA VPX (not all though) and I think some early SiS 55xx chipsets as well. The feature got removed about the same timeframe VIA MVP3, 430TX, 440BX and SiS 530 started showing up. Examples: VIA VPX based ACorp 5VIA3P has the fading EPA logo. MVP3 based Luckytech P5MVP3 does not, and neither a Soyo 6BA+IV or ABIT BE6-II have it - the ABIT is the most unlikely though - that one is probably among the earliest 6.00PG occurence, being 440BX.

You probably associated energy star with monitors because their logo used to be stickered to monitors and televisions before purchase. The logo tended to be the thing on the box that stuck out the most, and if you ever went an electronics retailer like Best Buy or Circuit City, you could see aisles full of the thing.

One of the rare instances you'll see graphics together with the blinking cursor. The only way to do this is to use EGA's text mode 640x350 (8x14 font) on a VGA! Just think about that for a while. If you use VGA text mode, the font will take 8x16 pixels but expand 1 pixel of empty space to make it 9x16, and will not allow for seamless graphics using character cells. Award was the best back then! So on a CRT monitor, you would be able to see scanlines more easily (because 350 scanlines instead of 400 or 480), a blinking cursor, and impossible graphics, compared to that version 2 that just uses boring 640x480 VGA graphics mode (you'll get in a Windows 16 colors graphics mode) with slow updating text and no blinking cursor.

Version 6 works to edit as well, though you need to set the EPA logo version to 2 - 1.0 was specifically used for 4.50 and 4.51 (though how would you get a 4.50G 486 BIOS to show a custom EPA logo is beyond my mere mortal understanding lol) and 6.00 was the one to start using 2.0. Some 6.00 might use 1.0 EPA logos though, depending on what resolution they POST in - e.g ABIT BE6-II uses 6.00 but likely uses 1.0 EPA due to 640x350 resolution, while my MSI 694D Pro-AR uses 2.0 and 640x480 resolution. I used to have a Gigabyte 8IPE1000-G with a custom orange/white Harley Davidson logo. The neat and funny thing is the small gremlin in the opposite side of the EPA logo turned white as well, instead of blue.

Maybe some people could find this useful: this method doesn't work with v6.00PG, according to the tests I made on 4 motherboards with v6.00PG. In fact, the results I got were all the same: when I tried to use Uniflash to back the bios image up, it said that PCI bus was not responding, and the program didn't show any of the ROM info, as shown at 1:48. But I didn't worry too much, as I used AWDFLASH to back the bios up and flash the epa logo-modified image. The problems began to occur when I tried to flash the new image via AWDFLASH, which prevented the action by saying "Bios image file checksum error", as it seems that editing the epa logo changes the checksum of the actual bios image file. So I tried flashing the modified image with a NANO USB chip programmer, and when I booted up the system it said that "a bios ROM checksum error occurred", and I was unable to boot the system. So I think that, because of the checksum-thing, the CBROM method doesn't work with any v6.00PG Award Bios. (I repeated the procedure described above for all the motherboards with v6.00PG that I was able to get my hands on.)

I have not done any research on Phoenix BIOS yet - most of my boards have Award. But you could try if CBROM is working on your Phoenix BIOS as well. Phoenix and Award merged in 1998...

There is a problem I HAPPEN to encounter always. I am rn using a PC with Gigabyte GA-686BX and the plan is to change the BIOS logo for my PC, (86Box is used during this process) however, every time, it gets me into the UniFlash screen but freezes ON WHOLE. Do you have any idea on how to fix this issue? Thank you.
@bitsundboltsАй бұрын
You're using 86Box when running uniflash? Correct me if I'm wrong, but maybe you can't flash the BIOS when it is emulated through 86Box. Have you tried it directly on the board?
@sm-ftveАй бұрын
@@bitsundbolts I don't think I have tried this on board, also, it sometimes doesn't even freeze this time after deleting and then restoring the file using a digital floppy I made out of UniFlash, I am emulating a PC btw. Before, it used to work for me.

No, it doesn't. It only works on old Retro boards with Award BIOS. New boards have UEFI firmware which is quite different from what I do in this video. Maybe there are tools that can modify modern boards, but I have not looked into it.

@@bitsundbolts IIRC anything up to the final 1155 boards that used Award BIOS in the transition era (e.g Gigabyte Z68P-DS3 rev1) should be able to use custom EPA logos, unless there's literally no space for it in the ROM.

I haven't tried that on any other motherboard yet. But there shouldn't be a reason for it not to work. Maybe I'll try some day to do this on a much newer, pre-uefi, board.
