Beautifully done 🔥 Got a pair on the way and adding more red dye immediately crossed my mind but I didn't want to have to go buy an air brush or anything like that, so this straightforward, minimal tutorial is super appreciated! One question: Did you only do one layer of dye?

No doubt! I’m doing a lot more customs lately that don’t involve my airbrush, so as I do them I’ll try to drop more videos. And I only needed one layer of dye for this one. It seems like this suede is a little bit better than the 12’s, so one layer was all I needed. When you brush it afterwards, you’ll really see the deep red.

I ended up doing in on a pair before I doubled up. I figured if I was gonna wear em as personals, I'd want them to look better than they came stock. I actually tripled up, so I'll sell a pair that I dye, rock one, and stock the 3rd. I've been thinking about trying to do the side by sides or before and afters at the end of the video when I show the finished product. Got it down in my notes now!

The red dye takes to this pair really well. Once I was done, it matched the red laces, but I chose the black laces after trying to decide between those and white laces.

Great vid man, only custom I ever did was the all star 3s turning into black cement 3s from the vid you did, one question bro. Do you brush the suede first to have it looking rough or after ? Or both ?

I do both. I brush it first to bring up the nap so the suede dye gets deeper into the material, then I brush it after to remove any excess dye and to bring the backstroke movement back out.

I went ahead and dyed the 23. The threads are already red, so the suede dye just enriches the red threading even more. If you don't want to, instead of using the dauber, use a small brush to brush the dye around the 23.

It’s already red, so no need to avoid the 23. And the black trim around the 23 isn’t affected at all by the red dye.

I went over both the 23 and the jumpman on the back. The threads are already red on the 23 and the black threads are dark enough to not be affected by the red dye.

Great job. Did this on my 09 pair after a few years. The dye got all over the netting like you mentioned. Lessons learned. I found that despite spraying them with waterproofer after, they would bleed onto my pants. Is that just to be expected or is it avoidable? Would love to do this to the new pair.

I have a pair that I used a little Crep on the toe really not that bad. Except like you mentioned the layers come off real fast with the red. After letting these dry for 48 hours, I had minimal red rub off. Doing the rain and stain protectant helps too.

For this one I only did one coat. The reverse flu game 12's I did 2-3 coats. That suede wasn't as nice as the suede on these 5's.

That’s why I might use an airbrush with the dye.

Using a brush around the edges helps limit the amount of dye you're putting in those areas next to the sole and netting. You shouldn't have any issues with bleeding if you brush the suede before and after.
