Cut Or Split Videos In MKVtoolnix |2020|
1. In mkvtoolnix go to "output tab".
2. Under splitting, you can see the option of split mode. There you will get various options regarding on what basis you want to cut or split the video.
select output size if you want to cut on the basis of size of a video.
3. Select the size from the option and click on start multiplexing.
4. Select after output duration if you want to cut video on the basis of output duration or timing of a video. for eg. if you want to cut video after 30 minutes, choose 00.30.00 in the option or manually write these as per hh:mm:ss.
5. Select the time given or choose custom time.

FFMPEG easy and fast to split video, but only video with no audio. Splitting video with sound ends up with audio out of synch. Tool Nix works, with NO audio synch problem.

Why mkvtoolnix can only save video and audio to mkv n mka? And mkvextract can only extract mkv files. Why not mp4 as well?

because in mp4 mkvtoolnix has to encode both the audio and video in one file, which it doesn't do, it's MKVTOOLnix, and the other is MKVEXTRACT, the name say it all.

​@@onepichi5225 I make video compresions from over 20 years now and trust me even avi has separated video and sound tracks . Mkv tracks (subtitle sound videos, subtitle chapters )are unlimited . The mp4 is somehow similar with some limitations and there are similar mkv toolnix software for mp4 container like mp4 box. Also nobody is encoding anything is just adding or changing container. Yes there are also software that can change containers between mp4 and mkv, .

I had some plugin or 3rd party software (to Mkvtoolnix) where you could visually set keyframes and cut video without reencoding. It was on my old system and now i dont remember the name...it was very useful - anyone?

I don't know about mkvtoolnix but avidemux can do this and if you are willing to reencode you should be able to cut video without even having to adhere to the keyframes.
