Great information! I've gone the cheap route for many years and have used ziploc bags. Light, see through and in a dire emergency you can use them to store/haul water.

A 40-pound pack sucks. Especially if there's a lot of altitude change involved. Source: Philmont Scout Ranch, 2013.

Ziplock weight even less and content is visible. I have gone this same route when I was younger 50 # pack no problem . Then as you age... ounces equal pounds - pounds equal pain. Gone to titanium very small cup 400 ml if I recall . Need my coffee or I would eliminate all containers . Stove is now a featherweight titanium esbit burner. Being in the desert I carry a lot of water which out weights my gear . A full 3 liter source plus 2 smart water bottles. But as the trip winds down my load is cut in half.

USGI canteen cup stove with the canteen, cup and stove in the pouch on your belt works just as well.

The USGI set is pretty much the same weight just with less capability then the titanium.

I had two standard issue stainless canteen cups that weighed 8 oz (half pound) each. I upgraded to two titanium canteen cups. I forgot the brand. They’re slightly smaller volume but the weight savings was 8 oz. I think? Basically got two for the price of one. One for coffee/tea and the other for food.

I looked into using maxpedition pouches or daka pouches. But I just use Ziploc freezer bags. The freezer gallon bag weighs 0.31oz and a sandwich-size Ziploc bag weighs 0.01oz. A heavy-duty name-brand freezer Ziploc bag works for me. Just buy the ones with the actual zippers.☝️ don't go to Dollars General for cheap knockoffs. Buy brand name. I got my bob down to 35lbs and my elderly parents down to 24lbs. My whole congregation and people of my religion in our area in the USA are going to use my bug-out bag list to get their bug-out bags ready. I got everything that could ever be needed even lightweight tents in my bug-out bag list. My bug-out bag can last several months and In an emergency evacuation, I got everything ready in my bug-out bag to protect myself and non legally if at all possible. I've maps and notebooks, 3 water filtration, and purification tools. 3 days' worth of complete changes of clean Clothes. Warm and cold weather gear etc…

I have the little Brother of the Kelty 128 (the Kelty Military Falcon 4000) and it is still heavier than the Osprey packs I use on the Appalachian and Pinhoti Trail at 6+ pounds, but it is a GREAT Tactical Pack!!

You can cut down weight but make sure it is not at the expence of cabaility or comfort. You need stuff to cover a range of situations & being able to get a good sleep allows you to go further. Also standised setups with pouches can save time & confusion. It is a trade off, training with weight at distance is also extremly important. At the end of the day a couple pairs of pre talced socks, warmers waterproof jacket, some water and a bit of food are the most important things everything else is extras.

Excellent thought provoking video. I also went through the ditching the pouches thing and found good mesh equivalents. Makes a big difference especially if you are a neat freak like me!

Why cut weight down, when you can just add more.

Excellent video, like those ditty bags. My only concern is mesh tearing which has been an issue with me before. Is that canteen worth the $?

Thank you. Like you said in your video, its difficult to justify $150 on a few oz. It's been on my to get list for a couple of years. I enjoy it alot personally. "I" thought it has been worth it and I would definitely do it again.

This was just my problem! - cramming to much stuff in my backpack gets SUPERHEAVY! one thing, i bought a smaller ruggsack! - i had a 55Liters, and that went way to heavy, now i have a 35Liters bag, trying to cut down on weight as much as possible, my bag is in the category of bugoutbag, (or likewise) scince i am not active military. -- We are now getting into winter season and have to think about that, but there are neccesary things, for example, i have the Lifesystems shelter for 4 persons in my bag, - that maybe sound strange, but the 2 persons version is WAY to small! and i am a big guy! - small chemical warmers, last many hours -- other warmers are those charcoal warmers, totally safe and odorless, the food i carry needs no cooking, dry meet, dry foods (Seven Oceans, etc), only needs water, thanks for the tips! greets, Levi

I need help me. I habe the 5.11 rush 100 bag and i love it. Trying to cut weight. It weights in at 6 pounds. I still need a 60 liter bag that you would recommend that isn't so tactical?

What I recommend is the Hyperlite mountain gear Southwest 55. It's 31oz lest then 2 lbs, it's waterproof and a 55 liter pack. The Downside is that it's pretty expensive. Next on my list would be a Kelty Redwing 50, awesome 50 liter pack. It weighs about 3 lbs. I have used it for years. It has internal aluminum stays to keep it rigid and comfortable.
