Buying purebred dogs from reputable breeders is essential to the survival and success of dog breeds. Annie Wildmosser a frequent guest on DogumentaryTV, is a small hobby breeder, located in Los Angeles. Annie is a great steward of her favorite breed, the Cane Corso.
I'm sure many of you will find her process for buying one of her puppies a bit draconian but she does it, with the best intentions for the puppy, the puppy buyer, herself, and the breed.

Everyone talking about her methods need to research buying champion line dogs. For that pretty much any registered dog's breeder has stipulations in place. I have bred Rottweiler's for roughly 10 years now. Not show dogs but they are all registered and come from good genetic lines. With every dog I sell there is a contract in place regarding the dog. If the purchaser no longer wants or has the needs to provide for the dog it is to be returned to me. If you want to breed your dog I am okay with it however, I want to know who/what you plan to breed with. I am not going to allow you to breed a dog you got from me with just some random dog. Because as she said even 10 generations later that puppy can be traced back to me. As for her stating she crops the tails and ears of all of her dogs. Why wouldn't she, she also stated she prefers to place them in homes where they will be show dogs. Take a Cane Corso to a show without cropped ears and a tail and see how that works out for you. There are standards to showing any form of dog if you don't want to abide by them don't buy from a breeder selling show dogs. From the comment section it appears everyone is used to just buying from a random breeder. Some people don't mass produce liters of dogs for the money they breed them to keep the genetic line going. Then again these are the same people who feel these dogs are over priced. If you want full rights to a top of the line dog breed go find either someone who is breeding for money, or has no care for the dog breed itself there are plenty of them out there.

Oh man this video definitely set a fire based on the comments I just read, lol. Just to clear things up a bit, most AKC champion line breeders (and i've been researching breeders for a while) usually don't just let you breed as you please. This is because it can be traced back to them and ruin their reputation. Not saying that the comments were wrong but she's just not that type of breeder and it's her choice. I also laughed when I see comments about not buying from her as if its important, because I'm pretty sure she has a pretty big waiting list of buyers. from my stand point I was hoping she would talk more about the science behind her breeding techniques (what does she test for) and what she is doing to increase the longevity of the breed since they don't live that long.

I think she's a good breeder, but she's I think somewhere confused taking difficult steps for greater good vs just being difficult. This happens with hobby breeders, because they are lot less subjected to traditional business models and their livelihood is not depended on this. They obviously are more Mico managing about the whole thing and that has potential to produce real quality dogs but that also brings niches out of preferences and expectations and commitments. I am planning on a boerboel, and it'll be.. how do I put it.. semi working or you can say, light to moderately working dog as family and property guardian. And circumstance of it's work makes me reason that clipped tail and cropped ears would be optimal for it's safety. But and I hate anyone who does these "alterations" ( i.e. mutilations) for cosmetic reasons. If you don't have a strict need for it, don't mutilate the body of the dog, poor bastards live to please you anyway don't put them through more that what's required. Btw, newfies are amazing dogs and I personally things they are nothing but huge loving Teddy bears 😁. Very good choice.

I agree, the thing is these dogs are of a molosser decent ancient breed of dog. I get how over the years it was imperative to mix certain types of mastiffs (neo and English) into their bloodline to save the breed from extinction. Everyone has their opinion on which cane corso is true, like the boxer type which is more athletic or the big boned robust type. I do slightly lean towards the big boned robust type and the reason is simply this, these dogs are considered “mastiffs”, males typically should be in the range of 150 lbs or more. Also, when you research old photographs or paintings of these dogs their resemblance is of that of the big boned robust built. My dog for example is a 4 1/2 year old male that weighs 170lbs.

Such a potentially dangerous breed needs all the help it can get. So do we, learning about the breed we want is the first step. Watching youtube videos are a great help. Having such a beautiful mild mannered Cane Corso makes me realize how hard it is to take him around. Loud little pint sized dogs have tried to eat him, thankfully he loves any pet. Because he is huge he will get full blame for injuring these troublesome dogs. If you get to fall in love with a huge breed like Kayto you will understand just how much you will want to protect them. Watching Anna's video of her puppies made me realize that I may not want to sell my pups to anyone. These dogs are too precious to be abused, all the want is love and you will never regret having him in your life. So I will not be breeding this dog anytime soon with this knowledge.

We have his tail done and thank heavens for that, our half his size Pittie just about makes us cry when his tail hits us never mind if Kayto had a long tail. I swear it would velcroed to his leg, not to mention cups and plates getting swept off the furniture.

Thank you for this review. I am a fan of this channel and of the Cane Corso. I am an owner of a CC and purchased from a breeder who had a fairly similar contract. In fact most breeders do have similar contracts & stipulations, and Annie mentioned up front that she had many, but had her reasons. It all comes down to doing your own research and choosing what’s right for you; this extends to the breeder as well as you enter a relationship with them and want it to be successful. This is a beautiful dog breed and has been a wonderful pet. I would purchase another in a heart beat from my breeder; however there are many breeders out there to choose from. I do not fault her for being specific as she she is upfront with her practice and why. Again, thank you for the varied “dogumentaries”; always very interesting.

Before my mom died nearly a year ago (May 24th will be one year), she was really getting hooked on Cane Corsos. We found a lovely lady who was starting to train her Corso in IPO one day and the dog gave his belly to my mom who delighted in petting it. Mastiffs aren't top on my list but of them, I have eyed Argentine Dogos and Cane Corsos for their relatively lean and agile builds, and alert, focused intelligent, owner-attuned attitudes. This last experience really put the Corso into my view. I still prefer the leaner dogs with less flews. The drier the mouth the better. I'll be looking at Corsos more from now on.

Ok guys ; i’m half french half italian and my family has been having cane corso for four generations. Initially, cutting ears is not done « for getting their natural aspect back » but only for practical reasons. Cane corso were originally used for guard or farm work, and floppy ears are really easily hurtable IN THOSE CONTEXTS. Ear cropping also gives a more agressive look to the dog. But in 2019 ear or tail cropping is a really selfish and useless mutilation for your dog to endure especially when they are family dogs or show dogs, which is the case most of the time. It is still an amputation, it still hurts the dog and there is nothing to do with NATURE since this breed has been domesticated for thousands of years and has basically never lived wildly. So PLEASE don’t use nature as a justification to your esthetic tastes. PLEASE don’t promote ear or tail cropping, they are mutilations that belongs to other ages.

We have intentions of breeding Cane Corsos but watching this video of such beautiful little fluffs I don't know if I could. We have a wonderful Kayto, he is amazing. He is sweet and tender with his big and small humans, totally loving and very protective but never aggressive. He and his brother Caleb ( a pittie) have given chase to a young man who came to our Haunt to ask what we were doing, I was terrified the dogs might eat him. I wanted him gone before they seen him so I told him I had a big mean dog at that moment as if on cue they raced out towards him. I never seen a human move so fast. I didn't even see his vehicle he made it away so fast. Later he was at the Haunt with some actors who were making a short film A Simple Seance by Len Morrisette. The poor guy gave me heck at first but realized I was scared too, we had a good laugh abut it. Kayto and Caleb were happy to chase him off thank God because it may have gone bad very fast. We very quickly build our outside walls immediately to keep our dogs safe. MY dog is my warning we must protect ourselves without putting him at risk. You have made me realize that I may be selling a pup to the wrong people and this alone makes me wonder if I would just wind up 10-11 puppies forever. I know how we love our guys couldn't stand the thought of thier pups being abused. But all the same we will always have a Cane Corso because they are simply wonderful and loving. Our 4 yr old Iris bosses our dogs its hilarious! Love our dogs!

Great video as always. A. Anything but hobby breeder. With this amount of control, paperwork and the almost annual litter, this is a profession. B. This show industry is destroying dogs. Dogs should be primarily be bred for work traits. C. Many people in the comments mention the boxer mix. I did not notice where she said that. But I don't like it. If she is so meticulous about her "hobby" breeding program she could find other corso lines, like Europeans, to improve the stock. Boxers have become overbred and so unhealthy shortfaced. I wonder what she did with the puppies that resembled more the boxer rather than the corso. D. Someone can not breed her puppies but I suppose she bred some one else's puppies in the first place. Question: if the puppy I get from her becomes hugely successful in the show ring or a dog sport, can she "reclaim" it to use it as her own, for show and breeding, just because according to contract she still "owns" it?

Everyone complaining about her practices obviously doesn't care for this breed the way they should. The APBT was ruined because of loose breeding practices and being in the wrong homes. Asking an owner not to breed by signing a contract is extremely responsible as is requiring an owner to return the dog if they don't want it. This is the exact breeder I would go to because I know she cares tremendously for the breed. The Cane Corso is a majestic animal with fierce loyalty and love for its owner. It has remained fairly stable because it was not as popular as other breeds. As their popularity has risen so has the number of them in shelters. Recently there were 23 dogs and puppies in MA that ended up in shelters from 1 backyard breeder abusing and neglecting them. If you truly love them then let's keep breeding on the low end with quality dogs who maintain their amazing temperament.

So, I would be paying to rent a high quality breed. Overall, it would take me to a point to pay for a dog in the big picture family. Not totally against it - it may provide great support and opportunities. I like it.

The puppies are really cute and look very healthy but I don't know how I feel about paying so much money for a pup only for someone else to tell me what I can and can not do with it. Its a no for me.

I understand your thoughts as a breeder. I have wanted one for a long time now. If i ever wanted to breed. i would need my breeder's help in choosing the right one to breed with.

Seeing this kind of person more and more, soooooooo sure that they are right about everything, the justification for tail and ear chopping is laughable and pathetic.

When she said that its restoring the ears to its natural state. I wanted to throw my Mac. Come on now. Just be honest and say you like the look.

She’s crap. The only reason she does it is for selfish reasons. So that if she takes the dog back that the ‘owners’ were babysitting or if they show the dog, it will look up to her standards. Thats the real reason. Has nothing to do with what’s best for the babysitter or the dog
