In, india not only wealthy , but also upper Middle class people can afford maids , bcoz their labour cost is low as compared to other nations, n it's a tradition of offering less previleged people jobs in household by giving them jobs by paying them. we being in a middle class family have one maid who comes in morning to do only utensils.

Maid/servant system in India is mainly due to the caste system prevailing in India. You won't see this in egalitarian societies like Japan or Korea. People from higher caste don't clean their house or washrooms as it is ingrained in them that people from lower caste has to do that. So they pay people to do that for them.
