I finally get to hear what would be the closest thing to Stephanie reading a dictionary with her lovely voice. I can die a happy man now. Back in the day, I had actually started out on Tin Whistle. A Clarke C Sweet tone. It eventually led me to the Ocarina, which is an ancient predecessor to the Whistle. And, interesting fact, an Ocarina that is made really good, has both a concert volume and a quiet volume, whereas with a traditional Whistle, you have only one volume. Since then I have two decades of successful playing. It has made my life better. And the experience I have on it helps translate into my other instruments, Guitar, Mandolin, and my personal favorite new instrument, Uilleann Pipe chanter... And thank you for that reference to us, how we play a higher note before a lower one. Mine and some other pipe chanters use reverse conical bores. It might help with, the fact that it is a thicker amount of material, to make the sound produced, sound more warm and loud? I wonder if they have Whistles made with reverse conical bore. So, Whistles have enhanced the way I play and approach everything else, especially because, back in the day, there was no tutorials online that were free, or, they were in such a place and I had no home internet and lessons for any instrument to be taught to me were expensive, so i literally just tried to play any song that came to mind. The one big thing it did for me that was really good was that it caused me to have to use my brain to find ways to make things, that traditionally, people didnt think would work, to work.

Reading music is far easier than trying to play from tabs. I promise you reading music score isn't really that hard. It all depends how much time you want to put in. When I was a child I learned piano bass clef notes overnight. Try it, it worked for me.

On tabs I keep seeing a plus at the bottom of some of the notes. What does that plus mean?
@katelijnhovestad83824 жыл бұрын
That means it’s part of the second octave, so for example if you own a D whistle it would be the second D on your instrument and the rest of the octave that follows. These notes are higher and so the cross shows where you have to play harder in order to reach a good note second octave. (At least that is as good as I can explain it, but I’ve only played for two months myself, I hope I helped you out though!)

Hi Stephanie, a lot of kids at the moment are quite rightly not going to church/Sunday school at the moment. How about a series of lessons aimed at young kids teaching them Christmas carols on the whistle for this Christmas? By Christmas you could have a lot more proficient young (and old) fans as I for one would be promoting it in my church.

Bore was already mentioned. Diameter of the inside of the tube. The tube part is :) “the tube” or sometimes “the pipe”. Or so I understand it. Also I am pretty sure the fipple and the block are the same part, and that it is a mistake to refer to the head or mouthpiece as the fipple...though you see that use a lot, and maybe it is becoming more common. Fipple comes from pipe organ technology and is the part that closes the tube and creates the windway. Finally, the bit about what the blade and window do is way simplified. :) But that is probably okay. I have a pretty basic “how does the whistle work” video here if you are interested. kzbin.info/www/bejne/d52xmq2rnL2SndU

Hello I've bought a cheap tin whistle in D. I'm not very musically talented and wanted to learn this as a hobby and to teach my daughter and thought this would be easy put I don't have the lightest of touch any advice I was looking at the Clarke D whistle with it being a little bigger do you think it might help or should I persevere for a while longer. I'm wanting to self teach obviously with some guidance from your channel.

@@CutiepieTinWhistle Haha! That's how I knew the frames lacked lenses - absolutely no reflection. BTW: At the end of the tutorial, just for a bit a levity, you should’ve put a finger through the lensless frame followed by a little wiggle. ˆ◡ˆ

Hi! Big fan :) love the videos but I’m still a beginner haha. Random question, how long does it generally take you to figure out the tabs for a song? Also, are you still on Patreon? Last time I checked, it glitched on your page. Not sure if it was the website but just letting you know!
@CutiepieTinWhistle4 жыл бұрын
Hi, thank you, so glad you're enjoying the channel! Working out tabs varies depending on the difficulty of the tune/song :) if it's a slow one, that fits the diatonic tin whistle scale well, and repeats sections often, it can sometimes take just a few minutes, but for faster, longer, more complicated tunes, that aren't designed for tin whistle, sometimes it takes days!! haha! I am still on Patreon, you can find my page here: www.patreon.com/CutiePiePiper

Dia = seven And that is the definition of a "session" in traditional music, in professional music industry, such as in the Nashville recording industry, a "session" implys something related to profe$$ional career. So if you begin stidying more theory or whatever, the person, like Rick Beato for example, will be using another definition of "session".

Just a comment about "embouchure," I don't entirely agree with your definition/explanation. Embouchure doesn't just refer to the shape of your mouth, but encompasses many things such as the position of your lips, tongue, jaw, etc., use of facial muscles, angle and height of the instrument in relation to your mouth, how much of the mouthpiece is on your mouth, and so on. Embouchure technique is relevant when playing any woodwind or brass instrument as it significantly impacts tone quality as well as ability or ease of playing certain notes on the register. Embouchure is not just relevant to the flute and it does come into play even for the whistle. Now I know that discussion on embouchure online in regards the whistle can get a little contentious, with two main camps: one, those who think it is important and two, those who think that focusing on embouchure is over analyzing and learnimg breath control is more important. I clearly fall into the first camp, since embouchure was beat into my head through years of formal concert band instrument training. I will say that in my opinion proper embouchure techinique doesn't seem to be a big consideration when playing the whistle as the fipple design is much much more forgiving when compared other instruments. Even so, it still is relevant to the whistle and it includes fundamental basics such as placing the mouthpiece between your lips with no gaps for air to escape from the sides of your mouth. Also, things such as dropping your jaw for low notes and tightening up the muscles around the mouth for higher notes, these are all embouchure techniques.
@CutiepieTinWhistle4 жыл бұрын
Yes, indeed, there is much more to it than mouth shape for most instruments - the description was as basic and simple as I could make it really ;) but there definitely are some techniques that can be helpful for hitting certain notes on tin whistle. In most cases though, anyone (even young children) can pick up a whistle and immediately make a sound out of it, whereas you do NEED the correct embouchure (or something resembling it) in order to be able to make any sound from a flute :) I think that's why most people would consider the tin whistle to not really have need for embouchure.
