@custardpup63852 жыл бұрын
@@Blazieth It's so interesting to properly look into. He says during Elpis that he's never felt intense grief the way Hermes seems to when he loses a creation, and that the death of his friends should be joyous because they've fulfilled their duty. Yet when Hythlodaeus walks away to be sacrificed, he can't help but be utterly devastated, that's the first time he feels grief I'm sure. You kind of realise that even though he's dedicated to his duty, his emotions clearly get the better of him, which is a running theme of his. On your point about him not agreeing with their end goal, it's hinted at a fair bit through bits and pieces of his dialogue and short stories that he is tired amd just wants to rest, doesn't actually care as much as the other unsundered do about bringing people back. The only reason the events of Shadowbringers even happen is because Lahabrea got himself killed and he pities the state of Elidibus's psyche and gives into sentiment. He can't bring himself to leave Elidibus to it on his own. I think it's really sad that during Elpis he asks the WoL why he would literally invite his own downfall, and ultimately it's because he just wants to be free of the burden of bringing his people back. He wants to be free of all the loneliness and guilt that comes with it. So naturally it's fitting that the only time he isn't slouching in Shadowbringers is on his deathbed, when he's finally free to rest. I love him man, he's just so human. Such an amazing character.

I second what others have said, but It also can be seen as a personal challenge. Hades acknowledges you as Azem. So now you must do what all Azems have done before you, go forth and travel. Would be a shame if an ‘Emet-Selch, an mere architect’ saw more of the world than an ‘Azem, a bonified traveler’. 🙃 And maybe even a reassurance to an old friend. “Don’t worry about me, don’t pity me- I’ve seen it all, now it’s your turn.” If you will-

1:37:34 weirdly, Emet is kinda wrong here. It's not sophistry. Sophistry is the use of fallacious arguments, especially with the intention of deceiving. Hermes isn't trying to deceive anyone, and his argument is sound theoretically. If the Amaurotines believe that it's there duty to make the star perfect and that it's there duty to be stewards of the star. And thus they remove flawed imbalanced beings from the star, and they them selfs are flawed and imbalanced, as we have seen with the asicans and Hermes him self. Then yes, they deserve to go. It's consistent, and cutting hypocrisy from their own actions. The problem is that the Amaurotines are seeking perfection without flaw. They aren't content to let things be, if they aren't "just so" they get killed. They evaluate the life and value of being from a point of view the precludes that life in and of it self has value that exceeds the value of a "perfect" star and that the act of having to destroy life isn't it's self damaging to the value of the end product. Not to mention the flawed assumption that a life ending willingly "returning to the star" isn't in and of itself a bad expectation to have. It means people are expected to roll over and die when they "compleat" their "purpose" and reach their "potential" or get funny looks for not dieing, leaving those who made connections with them in grief. Grief that they try and invalidate/soothe with "it's a normal and happy occasion, they lived a good life!" which it self is cold comfort to someone who feels the impending absence and then loss of a dear friend or family member. This whole thing could have been side stepped if they had had decent grief counseling and also didn't force people to end the lives of feeling constructs under their care like that, and abandoned the notion of people returning to the star when they didn't have to.
@RoyalKnightish2 жыл бұрын
They don't force anyone ending their lives. It's out of their own volition. Once they feel they have done enough, then they can return to the star. Venat, for example, chose to continue her life, and none of her peers tells her to off herself Grief counselor is there because there are people grieving, while here Hermes is noted to be the abnormal one for grieving of voluntary death or death in general, while most people there even Venat are fine with the idea of dying.
@GaleGrim2 жыл бұрын
@@RoyalKnightish I mean... Technically true. They aren't going to force you into a chair and put you down. But even Emet says Venat's choice to NOT die was abnormal and implied it was looked down on. kzbin.info/www/bejne/jKPRinmrfb2iaZo note the word choice "the BETTER part" which given Emet's sharp and abrasive nature is likely double speak, the better part as in the majority, and the BETTER part as in the ones who are decent individuals. Other members of society not following the heard and in this case choosing to die is a social faux pa. Many of the phantoms of false Amaurot express annoyance and displeasure with anything that stands out or goes against common conventions of what was "acceptable" for their culture. They won't force anything on you, but you'll hear about it and how inappropriate it is everyday until it stops being a thing you do. Not exactly a well spring of self determinism is it? It's an awkward topic. Sure you CAN choose to not "return to the star" legally but others can and will think less of you for it or think your a weirdo. Even the esteemed members of the convocation aren't exempt from side eye. Of course no one is going to say anything bad about or tell the previous AZEM to do anything especially to their face. How ever the fact people did think poorly of Venat for not choosing to return tells you all you need know. I think it's pretty obvious with context clues and a bit of thinking that the ancient world was pretty condescending and horrible about death and grief (among other things). Hermes's view point isn't REALLY uncommon. Even in the best of times when the ones we love choose to go, and having lived a fulfilling life. We still grieve. It's actually pretty normal. It's just that no one an Amaurot is talking about what they doing, feeling, or what is happening. They eat up and regurgitate the "it's a noble and happy occasion" line, and then those that feel like Hermes grieve in secluded silence and no one is the wiser. Because the only outward sign would be Elpis flowers which are just experimental dynamis detectors that are "a proof of the concept of dynamis" that normal people wouldn't know about. It's a niche esoteric energy still under study even for them. So in reality their are probably TONS of people from that era that are unhappy and grieving at the loss of their loved ones who have returned to the star. However they get told that "oh don't cry! They are just "returning to the star" like we all will want to one day" so they swallow it back and don't let it show. I also have almost 0 doubt that someone out their in the unsundered era has "returned to the star" not because they wanted to, but because they were told it's "the proper thing to do" and were politely rushed out deaths door like it was closing time at Walmart so to speak. I mean, think about it! What it amounts to is when you've done all you "want to", completed your life's work, had some retirement, and got all that pesky living biz out your system, you off your self. Does that SOUND like a paradise to you? "Oh well, last day on the job! bye jeff, bye stew see you at my suicide party next week! Remember to bring the ice Stew!" WHO DOES THAT!? It makes 0 sense. Amaurot sounds like a weird ethical hellscape of peer pressure to do what you want to and then off your self mixed with a collectivist "conform or your a bad person" guilt schtick if I've ever heard of one. To say nothing of their isolationist political policy when you look at side quest dialog of fake Amaurot and they resolve to "just stay out of it and tell them resolve it" to stuff like war and plague in other regions of Etheirys...
@RoyalKnightish2 жыл бұрын
@@GaleGrim No one looked down on Venat though. Her decision to continue living was weird, but no one ever belittled her. At no point during our journey with Emet did she get belittled by him or her peers about her decision to stay on. Much of his dismay is caused by her antics. Is it because she's a former Azem?? Not really, since Emet and Amaurothians are a frank one and will speak their mind about something that they look down on, but again they never even hold her in contempt for her decision . It is pretty much highly uncommon for them, even Venat doesn't share Hermes's view on death. None of his peers share it either. If it were that common we would see it on side quests, but there aren't. So anything like " there's gotta be some of them taking their lives after being forced by their peers" is a headcanon, unless there's official record that says so Even sapiens like us have abnormalities like Psychopaths and Aspergers who are in minority. That's the case with Hermes (in his case being a super empathetic person) ,and due to their high lifespan, the abnormality in Amaurothian population is much and much lower than in our population. That's why none could even help out Hermes, since the idea of "why should we die" is foreign to them, just like us being unable to come to an understanding with psychopaths To be fair, i find the idea of being uncertain of our death quite scary. One moment we are having fun together, then all of the sudden everything's changed. There's this serenity leaving this world on our own accord after we have felt "yep I'm satisfied with what I've done" Also, i believe the idea of dying would be pretty much different were we to encounter a being whose lifespan far surpasses ours
@GaleGrim2 жыл бұрын
@@RoyalKnightish Emet and the Amaurothians are frank with us the WoL and the Scion Of the Seventh Dawn because they don't know us, or in Emet's case doesn't care about us (I have never met someone who give fewer shits about politeness then Emet, it's so refreshing, but the rest of the unsundered world doesn't seem to share his mentality, they are all mostly polite from what I've seen). We aren't convocation members. At best we are tourists "here at the behest of the esteemed Emet selch" in the phantom Amaurot. At worst we are just "new youths" being rebellious and immature. It would be like being rude to someone the president invited to dinner and a night on the town. If you knew they were invited you might watch your tongue, but honestly many and more won't single crap about us. However Venat? The previous holder of the Seat of The Traveler? Accomplished combatant and protector of the people? Belittle her as the beloved public figure she is and you'll be lucky if people don't line up to slap you for being that rude. At lest that's the impression I got. I don't really buy the "they are so different from us, a different species even!" stuff. Not when the game and story goes out of it's way to highlight and show us they AREN'T so different, that they have people they care for and fight for just like us, in the same ways we do, and go even further to make them just quirky versions of regular people. It breaks the theming of FF14 on so many levels if that were the case that they are "just that different". Should it be different for people who live that long and supposedly go out on their own terms? Yeah. However the game never puts that to any major proof. Then take great and deliberate joy in breaking those kinds of notions before our very eyes. It's more interested in telling a story through connection, using the rest as set dressing. It's dose a damn good job at it too don't get me wrong. However it's very inconsistent when you start to actually analyze it to see if it holds up. I have the same problem with the dragons. "They have a fundamentally different way of perceiving the world and processing memory." Well then they should act like it shouldn't they? Instead of them thinking, responding, and acting like normal people who just happen to be giant fire breathing lizards. If they have such a fundamentally different mindset and mentality due to their biology and life span and all that then they should be utterly inscrutable to us like the fae are in ShB. Like dragons are supposed to "experience time like a sphere, never forgetting, the scars never fading from memory" in the lore and stuff, but that doesn't track. If that were the case then a single moment of fear would never end or subside for them. Walk up behind a dragon and scream to spook them and they just never calm back down. It doesn't make sense. Still your arguments have quite a bit of merit. So it makes me curious. How do you think "returning to the star" goes down? We know it happens, but are told precious little about it if I recall? Do you think there is paper work and ceremony to it? Do they throw a "party" like a ball or something celebrating "the completion of a life's works" so to speak? It baffles me personally, I can't imagine that being anything other the awkward.

@@GaleGrim Let's see from other Amaurothians then. There's a side quest about them having an argument between each other, and in fact they got their own ministry for that, so people are indeed encouraged to be opened with each other. One of Venat's friends even directly debated convocation decision about Zodiark. That's equivalent to some scientist going directly to white house and has a debate with the cabinet members there. Amaurothians as seen in the games never looked down someone's decision nor arguments. Another thing is, they treat convocation members just a bit more special from each other. It's vastly different from how we treat our own president. Yes, they are acknowledged for their achievement, but that's just it. Even till the end of their time, neither any of them cursed or looked down Hermes for his part in their destruction. Even Emet never insulted nor looked down on Venat, after sundering their world So yeah, it's incredibly hard to imagine them going as far as "ridiculing someone to death" for not returning to star. If being able to protect and care for someone is the only indicator for being the same, then we should treat our Cousins, the great apes, no different from how we treat each other. But we can't, what we do and we need is vastly different from them. Chimpz will fight tooth and nails for the sake of their own family and friends, but still we can't expect them to need a car to do groceries. However, we should acknowledge our similarities with them by NOT hunting em down to extinction That's the thing with 14 for me. We should both honor our differences AND similarities. Dragons perceive time differently as in for example. Someone can hold grudges for about 30 years, which means it's about half of their lifetime. For dragons, half of their lifetime is like thousands of years. Saying that they will continue screaming after being surprised is not how it is, however the emotions after that effect will linger on for millennia. Maybe they have some kind of solemn farewell with their friends. Kinda nice to think about it instead of getting a message on WA about their death, no? Can't even say our farewell with that.

A few things I learned/ realized while playing through Elpis. 1) Bird -girl is annoying and knew she was going to turn 2) I wanted to kick Emmet-Selch in the nuts at first until much later… 3) I want to punch Hermes mouth with my mouth 4) I am two milliseconds away from slapping Venat as I knew she was sus af.. 5) Hylthodeaus is too precious for this world and must be protected at all costs

How is Venat suspicious? Venat never lied about a thing. She was true to her words and ideals until the very end. People wanted that "Hydaelyn = bad" twist so badly that it feels like they're kinda projecting.
