Although these trees are not as big as the one in the previous video, they were all still leaning towards the house and I decided they had to go.
Over the years, they were continually dropping branches and leaves on top of the buildings, which always left a lot of cleanup and potential for damage. Also, with the storms that have been coming through here, I didn’t want trees leaning over the house, increasing the potential for home damage if the entire tree were to fall.
So today we tackle the task of dropping a number of trees in one day. This is more challenging than I expected it to be proving that I am a simple novice and really don’t know what I’m doing.
But in the end, we finally got it done and Kt even got to drive the skid steer for a while.

As a bridge builder for 34 years, I had my hand on a chain saw more times than I can remember. My crew also did tons of bridge maintenance and again, chain saws were a part of our work. The tree you took down over the house was one that took some B...s to make that decision. Easy to take a tree down but where it lands, that is the question. Many times have I or one of my crew plan where the tree will go and most times it would. BUT, there were times it did not go where we wanted it to. lol You did a really good job here and had enough saw to get the job done. One story I remember when I was maybe 30 years old. We had a huge red oak tree beside the interstate that had to come down due to age and it was dying. Back then McCulloch was a great saw with lots of power. The tree was at least 3 to 4 feet in diameter at cutting height. It took me awhile to fell the tree. After it hit the ground, I started trimming it for removal. It was a hot day in SC but me and that saw were on a mission. Not sure how many tanks of gas it took but I completely cut up that huge red oak. I was young and had plenty of energy. But that tree took all the energy out of both me and the saw. Just as I was finishing the job, the saw just stopped. I looked at it and put it down next to the stump where I sat. With a smile, I said to the saw, you and me both. lol We were done for the day.

That is an absolutely awesome story Jerry, thank you for sharing it. Yeah I was extremely nervous taking down that big tree, knowing that I had no clue what I was really doing. I watched a few videos and decided on a technique, but with no practical experience we know that that could’ve definitely gone way wrong.

I'm watching this tree cutting sometimes while biting my lip in suspense. Great work. We had winter storms here in ME that caused treed issues and power outages...had to hire a tree service to clear some of it. My solo stove...let's have a fire...won't have to buy wood. Stay safe and maybe I'll see you at Laconia. I'm owtriding.

You can see the chain getting dull by the amount of effort and the size of the chips coming off of the cut.

i am no expert, but have seen enough tree work to say I don't think you did any of that right. Be safe, as chainsaws and falling trees are very unforgiving.

@@HomesteadLifeWithAmsoilA-eu7qq Learn to master the basics on easy, straignt trees. Practice your notch and back cuts. Learn how to sight where a tree is going to fall. Always ensure you have an escape route. And most importantly, use the correct PPE, including chaps, gloves, face and eye protection, hearing protection and footwear. Felling trees is simple, but incredibly dangerous.
