We've got 'em, they just moved overseas to where the regulations are different and we don't have to see it. For all of Enron's flaws, the company had some admirable traits like strong marketing skills, employee camaraderie and being ahead of its time. Most of Enron's 1990's advertisements could pass for today's modern Apple advertisements with their sleek globalized look and innovation.

Had they been perfectly honest about it, they may not have made as much money, but it would have not lead to a spectacular collapse of their company, not to mention wipe out the pensions of their employees (some of whom committed suicide as a result).

@@filrabat People lost a lot. One man lost his entire retirement fund; he's now spending his golden years mowing lawns to make ends meet. People lost their children's college funds. we keep asking ourselves why? why did they do it, why did they cook the books, why were they so corrupt. Also Jeff you didnt change the world
@JarethTheGoblinKingForever5 жыл бұрын
Well, in a way Jeff Skilling changed the world - what he, Ken Lay and Andy Fastow did, among others, is something which has taught us to ask why, but for different reasons, questions that are repeating themselves in various forms with WorldCom, Theranos, etc. Theoretically a corporation should be a trustworthy entity... Enron has taught us that we can't be so naive. It's sad, because Enron really did know good PR and marketing. It had so much potential that was wasted by greed and selfishness.
@helenagrunstein52655 жыл бұрын
I am curious, did you work for Enron?
@filrabat4 жыл бұрын
Why did they do it? They were they thoughlessly "Damn the torpedoes! Full speed ahead!" balls-to-the-wall management at best, outright sociopaths at worst. Why did they cook the books? To hide underperformance, same as other book-cookers. And had the benefit of hiding their flaws in their hard-charging management style. Why were they so corrupt? Because they put self-gain ahead of company and employee well-being. Jeff did help change the world, so did Ken Lay. Bernie Ebbers of WorldCom, too. And "Chainsaw Al" Dunlap of KimberlyClark and Sunbeam as well. Helped bring about the concept of the "Corporate Psychopath", as explicated by Robert Hare.

@JarethTheGoblinKingForever3 жыл бұрын
As far as I know, the "En" in "Enron" stands for "energy", but I think the name itself was just made up because it sounded good at the time.
@JarethTheGoblinKingForever3 жыл бұрын
@Vincent Safuto Interesting, and makes sense. I know the company was famous for its crooked E symbol, but that didn't come about until later. Early-on, the company just had a simple logo and was "Enron", and the name origin confuses a lot of people. I'd been told it meant "energy", but I'd also heard other stories, as well. There was a rumour that Enron was a secret acronym (this rumour has never been validated by anyone who worked there), and also a rumour that the "E" had something to do with electronics, but I'd never heard that the name originated from "Enteron". It does make more sense than most of the rumours.
