Ice Castles with Robbie Benson and Lynn Holly Johnson was the original ice skating movie, many years before Cutting Edge. If you haven't seen it, it is a must-watch. It will break your heart and make your heart SOAR all at the same time❤

@@vancemccarthy2554Ice Castles was even better IMHO. I think the storyline got a little deeper, and evoked more feelings, maybe because of the relationship between the characters, or the chemistry

This is one of the most touching love scenes in movie history (in my opinion)! His declaration finally comes after what had to be a lot of soul searching and when the facade of mutual hatred finally disappears. It makes it all the more intense and romantic when he says what he feels, and their triumph in the Olympics is second rate compared to their triumph over their emotions and connection to each other. Love it, love it.

When The Cutting Edge was released in 1992, I was 12 years old and in 6th grade. And I was a figure skater. I don’t remember where I was in my training at this point, somewhere between freestyle 1 and freestyle 5. I loved ice skating but it was a very big commitment that ultimately interfered with school and I had to take a break. Today I'm 44 and I never returned to the ice from my break. Watching ice skaters brings back so many great memories of being out on the open icerink. I loved competitions. The experience of being out on the ice all alone and with no one else makes the icerink feel massively large! But overriding that awesome feeling of being all alone out on that massive icerink is the coach constantly pushing you to increase your speed and moves so that your program fills the ice rink and isn't all in one small area of the center. That was challenging at 12 years old before I shot up to 6'3 in height. And yes, the toe pick is not for slowing or stopping. It is for doing jumps as well as various critical-level technique moves and footwork. Maybe I'll jump back out on the ice before my time comes.

I wish the movie had been a little bit truer to the way skating competitions really happen. In no Olympic (or Olympic qualifying competition) would you see skaters under the spotlights. The house lights would be on. Other parts of the movie are truer. I used to skate competitions, and I can assure you will see a skater toss their cookies. I'd love to take off Anton Pamchenko. "And believe me, Gretskie! I am last person who comes to look for you!" Great line.

This clip came up in my KZbin feed today and it's one of those blast from the past moments, I was an extra in this movie and in these scenes. These scenes were shot at Copps Coliseum (now FirstOntario Centre) in Hamilton Ont. I had been doing work as an extra in TV shows and movies in the early 90's. The agent told me they were shooting all week if I wanted to get some work however it was only on Wednesday that I could go. I showed up at like 6:30 am but about 7 am someone came out and told the group of people gathered to be extras in the movie that they wouldn't be needing anyone today and pretty much everyone left. I decided to stay and hangout just in case and about 8am someone came out and was like 'Hey you (pointing to me) come with me'. I was taken to a dressing room where there were several other extras just waiting. It wasn't until around noonish they came and got me. I remember I was standing around waiting to be told what to do and there was this crowd of people and they just seemed to part in front of me and there was this guy sitting there and in that moment my immediate thought was it's 'Starsky'... it was Paul Michael Glasser, the director of the movie who has played the character of Starsky. That was always kinda cool for me as I remember watching and liking the TV show 'Starsky and Hutch'. I'm actually in the scene where Doug (D. B. Sweeney) is trying to tell Kate (Moira Kelly) that he loves her. At 1:04 an extra goes behind Moira Kelly and nudges her. The extra had been instructed to nudge Moira Kelly but in the first take the extra just walks right into Moira Kelly. Subsequent takes the extra just nudges Moira Kelly. In each of the takes I actually follow closely behind the first extra. We start off screen to the left, first she goes then I go and we squeeze into a corner out of the scene. At 1:12 the same extra goes by again and again nudges Moira Kelly. It seems that I end up on the cutting room floor as in both scenes the camera angle is changed, apparently right when I go by. I do appear in different scenes though as an usher. As an additional side note, about a decades ago and now in Calgary I was playing poker with this guy that claimed to be the brother of Moira Kelly and wasn't flattering about his sister but who knows if he really was her brother or not.
