Dogg-o wants to help ! Lol, it's funny how GSD's all share certain things about their personalities. Looks like a puppy still, 9 months old ? Cool project man. I'm building a 1970 Camaro in my garage too. Replaced both rear quarters, floors in trunk and one piece full floor in the car. New roof with A pillars, new tail pan, new front fenders, new front upper and lower valance... well I guess it be easier to say everything is new except for the firewall and the rear package tray.. lol. Did it all myself, it was really fun. I enjoyed the challenge.

Always best to leave the factory body line if at all possible. It maintains extraordinary strength and those cambodian made patch panel body lines are never as straight as factory lines. Trying to put that shape back in wastes tons of time and it was already in the original panel. Plus, that creased body line prevents the cut edge from warping once it's cut. Patch panels are meant to be cut to size. They're as big as they are in case you need that much new material. You don't have to use all of it. Not a horrible video. We've all started out somewhere. The high end processes and procedures come with decades of doing of trial and error.

@@gillhe1 Yeah. Then that's the only choice. After 40 years of restoring old rusted out pigs, I've found replacing the entire quarter is much more economical. If the bottom of the quarter is that rusted, the wheel houses usually are also. And I'd always rather spot weld a new panel than tig across the entire face of a patch. To each their own.

That's pretty awesome! If I were to start this project over again I would have completely stripped it down and had the body acid washed then I would start replacing floor boards and quarter panels. however, at this point I just want to get the car finished, I'm about to post a somewhat lengthy video on the Camaro.

@gillhe1
@gillhe1 3 жыл бұрын
Well if you could find a 1970 that would be awesome! I've noticed that the cars are a little more difficult to find at least in Oklahoma. In all honesty I would probably get a roller, completely strip it apart and build it from the ground up. But with a clean title, no motor, and little rust I wouldn't spend more than 3k on the car. However I would almost guarantee the floor pans will have rust holes.

Any reason why you used self etching primer instead of epoxy primer? Also, I found using strip disks on a grinder a much easier way to strip paint/rust prior to body work. They don't leave hot spots and warp the metal like flap disks do. What did you do with the inside of the quarter panel? Did you fill the areas in where you removed metal?
@gillhe1
@gillhe1 3 жыл бұрын
In my opinion from previous experiences self etching primer adheres to bare metal better than epoxy. On the strip disks for the grinder instead of flap disks I do agree with you. I just didn't get any for doing the lower quarter panels but I more than likely will for the rest of the paint stripping. Also for the back of the quarter panel I ended up welding in new pieces to make it like oem, I just couldn't find the footage due to technical problems. Thank you for the comment!
