A tree guy told me everything looks different when you are up in a lift. Absolutely true. just did the same thing a few days ago. Got the job done but learning curve big time

I used to clean Jumbo jets in a cherry picker, 2 big blokes in the basket cleaning the tail, crapping myself with every sway, this brought back scary times. Good job on that tree.

You did good and saved yourself a bunch of money! Next time leave the gas can and other supplies on ground. Keep chainsaw tool in your pocket to tighten chain if it becomes loose. Always wear a harness, and tie yourself to the bucket securely! VERY instructional video on boom. Thank you for taking your time to instruct on use of boom.

I used a gas powered JLG lift when building columns for a new bridge over a river in Ohio. It went up to 100' and it was the largest manlift in the area. At that height the slightest movement of the joystick control would have the basket swing back and forth 4-5' each way, kind of unnerving, you didn't want to think of it tipping over :)

It's not bad after the first half hour- just did two days in a 60' mobile articulating boom. lol the fun starts when you're way high up, & then start moving the whole thing forwards & backwards. I'm not as big a fan of helmet cams because most users forget to move & turn your head slowly while filming; makes you car sick watching lol

OMG. Compared to the savings of DIY, cheaping out on safety is an embarrassing way to die. Not a good lesson for all the spectators either. A branch can easily pinch your hand and pull you out of the bucket. You rent a harness or you just buy it and later sell "used once" on CL.

We need to do this, we have 3 very large trees that need trimmed, (70 years old maples) so I have been looking for videos about that. This looks scary as heck!! And to think about my husband going up to trim or even cut down our trees, I am not sure I will be able to be here. LOL I think we will take out the two trees in the front and leave the one in the back, but cut it back a lot. This is going to be a big job..... I hope there are not squirrels in the tree either. We usually have a couple families. I am so glad you got through this safe and sound!!

At first it was fun and scary and new, and then the saw acted up and it turned into just another way to work. A more portable boom like that seems better than climbing and taking a tree down from the top down but I suppose a lot of trees are too tall for a bucket boom.

Hi Bill, I had same sort of problem with my sthil saw, it turned out the vent in the fuel cap wasnt working and was stopping the fuel venting correctly, creating a vacuum in the fuel system, starving it of fuel, new cap fitted and works great now.
