Cutting Vinyl Record with CNC

In this Episode of Business Everyday, I am cutting an old vinyl record with the X-Carve CNC. I saw a design on Instagram and was instantly inspired to create something similar myself. I have a stack of old vinyl that is ready for carving. My first attempt was a silhouette of the Nashville Tennessee skyline.

Thanks for the video. I just got a CNC and this is something I was interested in doing with all the vinyl records I see are our local St Vinny's. PSA: NEVER cut vinyl with a laser. When vaporized it produces chlorine gas which is deadly. I know people have done it, but just because you can doesn't mean you should.

Now the question is can you use some precise CNC milling machine to engrave music onto some plastic 12 inch material and then put it into the vinyl record player and listen to it... I know it needs a software to convert wav file into the up and down moves of the engraving tool, but in theory it is possible.

I'm interested in doing this and have a laser, but truth be told, the gasses the heat emits from PVC material is poisonous and corrosive to your equipment. Which is why I'm venturing in the CNC to do this. Laser would be so much easier, right?

Have you tried using a Cricut Maker to cut them too? I have tried doing 15passes with the Cricut & the fine point blade but only cut 2/3 through. Cricut gave me an idea to help finish it. But may be worth you trying.

Need to build a small vacuum bed for cutting flexible substrates.

Use Windex or a spray cleaner like 409 as a cutting fluid to prevent the vinyl from melting and gumming up the bit. Also a profiling bit like they use to make signs in laminated plastic has a fine point and gives better detail. Use the center hole in the record to clamp it down. corrigated cardboard not a good backing material use plywood.

You need different drill bit. Try using "Single flute bit". Im using 1.5mm and its milling great!

Maybe use a pattern in negative, if you removed the top of the record rather than cut out the skyline it would be sturdier!

I have a looker 5w laser engraver and I have been told that if I cut it with a laser it is poisonous? Any advise on cutting it.please?

​ @firas faisal I have a laser CNC and am still testing with it. What I have found so far is that the record is really sensitive to heat and the laser can melt the vinyl. I have not found the right settings yet for this process.
