This is Part 1 of our Franna Crane project. We are getting started on repairing our Franna MAC 14 crane and we are beginning with the boom lift cylinders that are in desperate need of a rebuild. This video we get both the cylinders off the crane by removing the pins and hydraulic hoses that are connected. We also show the step-by-step process to disassemble and tear down the cylinders using our hydraulic press. We find out that not only do the cylinder rods and seals need replacing but the inside of the cylinder barrels is also rusted and scratched and we will need to replace those as well! Stay tuned for Part 2 when we get started on manufacturing the new cylinders.

Thanks from Canada for my Friday morning fix. If it was anyone but Karen these videos would never be made. Your ability to know when to chuckle and how to offer straight forward direction to Kurtis, which he accepts from his wonderful wife, keeps Kurtis on track when all he really wants to do is get the job done and done right. Being interrupted repeatedly to explain what he's doing, and why, often multiple times at the same stage of work, must drive him nuts. Thankfully, Karen, you've got the midas touch with Kurtis. It's a complete joy watching Kurtis using old school equipment while repairing or fabricating heavy equipment parts. Your knowledge and experience on wide ranges of equipment are amazing while adjusting shop priorities to handle rush jobs to keep customer equipment working as quickly as possible.

lots of Perkins diesels have a similar thing. They use a nozzle in the intake manifold to put a mist of diesel on a heating element. This lets the engine draw in the warm part burned mist, the mist burns easier in the cold engine and it starts, hopefully ;) It's common for the heater coil to burn out or the control not to work.

Guys the shop is coming together, I personally would source an overhead gantry crane to support those machines. An overhead gantry is one of the best things I put in my place. A pricey piece, but worth it in the long haul. Also, the Australian Armor Museum seems as if they can occasionally use big machines like you now have, it would be pretty cool seeing some WW2 tank stuff roll through your shop. To clarify, I mean a overhead crane that can support the entire shop with an adequate working load and more than one lifting hook

Although, usually the water gives us problems with all of the servo valves, so it usually only stays that color for a week or two. And we've never had a cylinder get THIS bad. Even the ones that are drenched in impregnation solution, that absolutely wrecks machine parts, their entire lifetime. That's some impressive stuff.

Find stuff like this fascinating. I think of myself as a pretty hands on practical guy, but to see the level of effort and bravery you are willing to put into stuff Is great. Massive fan of the “if it’s broken, I’ll fix it” mentality. Even more so in the modern throw away culture

@@LadyAnuB I think the first thing that he would need to do if that was the case would be to put a seat that makes him sit a little bit higher you can only see the top of his head when he drives it lol but he has had that instance where he used to cranes to get the machine off and there is nothing saying that with what the future will hold he may need two cranes to do something else I guess you can look at it this way as well if he kept both he could use the old one for the light work and the big one for the heavy work but a nice paint job would make the old crane look really nice

Man, "I didnt even need a spanner" the heavy sigh, that oil just sizzling because said unneeded spanner is still so fresh the welds are still hot, absolutely killed me. This has been an interesting dichotomy of absolutely rested out stuff, and stuff still coming apart relatively easy, somehow.

Love the colored tie wrap trick to keep the hoses straight, I'm going to borrow that one. Glad to see you putting this back together right, even if it's going to be more trouble than you originally thought. Shortcuts now equal more time wasted in the future, usually when you are trying to use it to get something important done.

Amazing how good the image stabilising is on the Homiecam. With the boom also time to get 4 matching LED lamps for the front, so you can replace all 4 with the same type. Those 2 new cylinders are guaranteed to be perfect though, and will be the best part of the whole crane as well.
