This video is Part 1 of repairing and replacing a Caterpillar D10 Dozer track adjuster cylinder that has been damaged. In this video we are machining and vertical honing the new track adjuster cylinder barrel. First we setup and machine the end off the old track adjuster cylinder on our TM-26120G lathe. Then machine up the new barrel by turning down the outer diameter and boring the internal diameter of the hollow bar. We finish up by using our Delapena Vertical Honing machine to finish hone the internal diameter of the cylinder barrel to spec ready for welding.

This would have to be my favourite video of yours for 2020, I love the fact that a machine as old as that vertical borer can still run true and can be accurate if properly maintained. I also love the fact you modified it to suit your needs. That there is ingenuity at its best and as I always say “adapt and overcome”, please keep up the good work mate. I stumbled on this channel by accident. I don't know much about machine shop work, but I can appreciate it when someone knows what they are doing and are good at it. I find myself learning something new each time a video is released. Now, if you would only explain what those initials mean for the various cutters you switch in and out. Oh, and the dog is the bomb. I've got a few of those myself (although my bully is bigger and blind).

Stick a live centre up its arse... heh heh. Love the shots of the safety officer. Another top job! Love that honing machine. If you're interested, check out the 50 ton rudder on HMS Victorious aircraft carrier that I worked on in 1968 as a 3rd year apprentice. We had to take it out, remove the old bronze sleeve, machine the steel stock with an air driven contraption on the dock bottom, then heat the new sleeve over a wood fire as it was rotated and get a team of labourers to lift it on wooden bearers when it was hot enough then slide it on the machined stock to cool down and grip. Then we had to re-install it. The for the pic here "The Rudder may not look very big" scroll down to page 6.

It is certainly nice to see someone that doesn't waste time and energy trying to tighten each key socket on a 3 jaw chuck. Tightening just one is all that is needed. That also applies to drill chucks. If someone's chuck needs tightening at all 3 sockets....their friggin chuck is garbage! You do really great work and, NO, it isn't as easy as it looks.

What would be interesting to know is the cost savings to the customer with you making/repairing these parts vs. them going to Cat and purchasing them new. I remember having backhoe outrigger cylinder rods cut off and replaced at a local machine shop vs. buying complete new ones from Case. Having the machine shop cut off the damaged rod and then welding on new rod was 1/2 the cost vs. buying new. Good job on the video's and content. And good job to your gal for filming for ya.

You are dead right. It is not as easy as it sounds. I narrate my videos after they are completed, how you manage to do it at the time, I don't know. Your camera operator/editor does a brilliant job too.

There's no way I would do this without the help of my misses who videos and edits. Half the time I don't know what to say and she asks me questions or prompts me with ideas. All the more to you if you do it all on your own! 😎👊💥

@@CuttingEdgeEngineering I think the chuck on my cnc lathe would fit up that bore you were machining. I usually run multiple parts so I can shoot one angle and then another. All on tripod without moving as the stuff I do is so small. The way your wife gets such steady shots is fascinating. Does she use a gimbal or just image stabilisation?
@CuttingEdgeEngineering
@CuttingEdgeEngineering 3 жыл бұрын
Yeah that's the way to do it if you're on your own! She uses neither just a very steady hand and her Samsung galaxy phone! The timelapse we use an iphone on a shitty selfie stick attached to a noga dial indicator holder haha. She actually bought a gimbal but doesn't like using it 🤣

Hi guys, I'm slowly making my way through your previous episodes. I can't believe people were getting so bent out over music in your videos! Yes it's good to hear the different sounds the machines make but it does drone on 😳 Personally I like the mix of a little more music than machine noise, but you do what you want to do. There will always be some weirdo that you can't please! I've got my merch on order to the UK too! 😁👍

So weird seeing different ways of honing, being the only one who know how to run the hone at my work and knowing its a half assed way of doing it makes me wanna learn how to do it properly. (running a 1970s century horizontal tube hone) definitely wanna see more videos on the hone

Really informative to me as a layman. I especially like the videographer’s ability to use the camera to show and explain what’s happening. No need for commentary, which is just as well judging by the outtakes!! 😉

Suddenly Delapena's website will be overloaded with all of the drooling machinists looking into vertical honing machines! I used to own a honing machine for engine cylinders, but it wasn't 8 metres tall! LOL I'd love to see more videos of that machine in action. Thanks very much for another super video, Kurtis! I cannot compliment your camera lady enough for the excellent videography. Oh, and please, tell us your best friend's name. He's delightful.

@@CuttingEdgeEngineering Thanks Kurtis! I had a Sunnen vertical honing machine back in the 1960s. I thought it was pretty big, but yours puts it to shame! LOL I used mine for honing cylinders in engine blocks. I was big into sports car racing at that time.
