is there a way to cast things without getting the natural wavy texture of the bone

If you are really careful and compress the 'bone' really well when you press a model into it, the texture doesn't show up on the cast piece, but it only works when using a model, if you carve you always get some texture.

Do you use real 100% cuttlebone? The only cuttlebone I've been able to find at pet stores are made from powdered cuttlebone and other ingredients.

Yes it has to be the real deal. And I have been having trouble with the pet store cuttlebone as well, they are putting some 'nutritional additives' in them and that ruins the casting. Some jewelry supply websites do have natural, clean, and whole cuttlebone available, though.

Now if i could only get my gold hot enough with my crappy "new map" gas torch so it doesn't solidify as soon as it leaves the crucible... maybe this could work... Sure would beat having a jewler make it.
