One of the best dam removal videos, out there. No talking heads, all action. . Git 'er done.

This was a great way to condense the whole process into a short, very watchable video. It was a bit difficult to gauge the progress while sporadically watching the Dam Cam stream, but this video makes it very clear. I could have done without the SimCity style jackhammer noises though.

I think this is the only time in KZbin history where the music didn't absolutely ruin the video. It was a very nice addition

Uprated. Very cute music and sound effects -- I like the jackhammers! I was born in Cleveland in '57 and grew up in NE Ohio but moved to NYC in '77 so don't remember exactly where Cuyahoga Falls is. Greetings from France!

just north of akron and 28 miles southeast of cleveland- the dump where you were born. if i say 'caucasian falls', does that ring a bell?

You do realize these aren't falls?! These are DAMS. The city was named Cuyahoga Falls before these dams even existed. The original Falls have been inundated by the Ohio Edison Dam just downstream. Tear that one down and you can have actual falls back possibly.
@tommurphy4307 Жыл бұрын
maybe- they are saying that the big falls was considerably altered by the washout of the chuckery dam, several HUGE pieces can still be seen just below the gorge dam.

You need to fire your sound engineer. Volume of music WAY beyond what was reasonable or even necessary and unnecessary - and incredibly annoying and distracting - sound effects added for no reason. That person needs to go back to school.

Why not just blow the dam things up with dynamite? :D
@zattak500010 жыл бұрын
The reason they do not use dynamite to destroy the dams is to prevent any damage to any surrounding structures. In the case of the Edison Dam that exists further downstream to the ones shown in this video, using dynamite to destroy the dam would quickly take down one of the two largest remaining dams on the Cuyahoga River, but it will instantly flood the low lying areas in the valley further downstream and release dangerous materials along the riverbed behind the dam into the rest of the river which will kill off all plants and animals that rely on the water for hydration. By taking it down slowly like they did with these dams, it slowly releases the water with minimum to no flooding which will prevent any damages to the environment and any homes/businesses that sit along the river. Plans are currently being considered to remove the Edison Dam to uncover the waterfalls that gave namesake to the city of Cuyahoga Falls which will then put all the stress on the Brecksville Dam which prevents fish from Lake Erie to migrate into the river, but plans are also being considered to remove that dam as well, thus returning the Cuyahoga River back to a near-natural flow again with a few minor dams being simply bypassed. I've always enjoyed visiting the Gorge MetroPark to see the Edison Dam and find it amazing that it is over 100-years-old. The dam is licensed until 2041 at which point they would decommission and destroy the dam anyway so instead of waiting another 27 years for the license to expire, they want to remove it now since it is no longer serving its original purpose of powering the city's transportation system and providing the cooling water for the now-destroyed factory. In all honesty, they should remove the dams and return the river back to its natural state. I'm sure a lot of people would love to see the original Cuyahoga Waterfall that has been buried under a concrete wall for the last 100+ years.

zattak5000 Sorry, I didn't mean that comment about the dynamite to be taken seriously. It was a joke... But I am 100% with you on restoring the river to it's natural state. There are so many old dams all over that serve no real purpose anymore. Heck, I find it hard to justify a dam in almost any case. There are very few...and I repeat very few exceptions, where I am OK with a dam. Thanks for all the info! I don't live in Ohio, so that was really interesting.

+zattak5000 So glad to hear that the Edison Dam in Gorge Metropark is coming down in 2019. As a fly fisherman local to Cuyahoga Falls, I cannot even express how happy I am that our Cuyahoga River is being returned to its natural state. We just now have to pressure Brecksville to get rid of theirs and we might be able to catch Steelhead again!
@zattak50008 жыл бұрын
DrRockso419 I am quite sure that the Brecksville Dam may be a different story since it is located along the Towpath Trail and I believe is a part of the Cuyahoga Valley National Park, but they will be likely more agreeable to remove the Brecksville Dam. As for the OhioEdison Dam, it is still projected to be removed in 2019, but they are still questioning how they are going to receive the additional funds to pay for $70+ million project to remove the dam ($12.5 million) and removal of the slightly-contaminated sediments built up behind the dam ($57.5 million) and they are still trying to figure out whether the MetroParks owns the dam or if the OhioEdison company still owns it. Not only do I see fishing improving once the dams are gone, but I can see the Gorge MetroPark adding a new trail where the current reservoir pool is now to lead down to where the submerged waterfall is which will increase hiking traffic, kayaking traffic will increase to travel the whitewater rapids along the river, and photographers (like me) will travel there to show the changes to the MetroPark and to see the Big Falls that the city of Cuyahoga Falls was named after ever since it was submerged over 100 years ago.

I've read over lunch today that both are slated for removal... Concerning the Brecksville Dam, there was a meeting in Peninsula 2 days ago discussing the plans, and I had heard on NPR about a week ago that the Gorge dam removal has been made official! Here's an article from March 2016 which discusses the Gorge Dam and the fact that the FED EPA is going to pick up 65% of the pricetag for its removal! www.ohio.com/news/local/gorge-dam-removal-on-cuyahoga-river-between-akron-and-cuyahoga-falls-is-moving-forward-with-federal-blessing-1.667458

With no falls should we just call the city "cuyahoga city?" Kinda false advertising at this point. Just like Monroe falls, no damn falls.
