And the lowest drawing WWF Champion of the 90's. Because in ring skills don't matter and if you lack charisma and mic skills you're not going anywhere. He still holds the distinction of main eventing the lowest drawing WWF PPV of all time. He couldn't even draw in Calgary, lol.

@@Nomolyx1 Wrong. IYH DX got a 0.44 buyrate (which comes out to about 159,000 buys). IYH5 headlined by Bret did a 0.35 (barely 80,000 buys) and remains the lowest. In between, IYH It's Time did a 0.36, so even that was lower than the DX PPV (which obviously still was a massive failure, nobody is denying that. Going with Shamrock as Main Eventer was beyond idiotic) If you're clueless, it's better to shut up than to look foolish like you do right now, kiddo.

Bret is old school where if you are the heel you act like that and sell the heel angle as that draws in the fans, this is like the whole angle of Lawyer/Kaufman. It sold tickets and brought in the crowds to the shows, was during a time when wrestling sold cause of the wrestlers not the matches as would go see a Bret Hart/Dynamite Kid over these goofy matches in the cage or ladder matches.

I've read in Len Denton's autobiography that he wrestled a broom as his final test when he was learning wrestling. Austin's mania match against Hart. hell.. shawn's ironman against Bret. give the man his due.. he might legit be the best there is,was and ever will be.
@Longlostpuss
@Longlostpuss Жыл бұрын
Shawn was never better than Bret, he just lasted longer because Bret's career was unfortunately cut short. If I were to rate like the games, Bret is a 94 and Shawn is close at 93, but Bret would have pulled away further if his career hadn't been cut short. If you take a head to head of wrestlers both Bret and Shawn wrestled, Bret's matches are hands down better. Bret was an artist as Sasso said, there's levels to this stuff. Shawn was very entertaining and probably a better athlete, but he wasn't as meticulous and artistic in the ring as Bret was with his storytelling. Shawn tended to comically oversell alot and there was alot of disingenuous things going on in his matches that just made them less believable to me, you just need to check out his match with Vader.
@Thor-Orion
@Thor-Orion Жыл бұрын
Imagine if the WWF actually booked their company properly while he was champion instead of always trying to build the newest project to replace him and failing to do so? We could’ve had a Bret-Bam Bam feud, a Bret-Macho Man, Bret-Sid, Bret-Jake Roberts, Bret-Vader, Bret-Doink in an actual feud instead of that Jerry Lawler kiddie-diddling fill in spot, Bret- Rick Martel, Bret-Rick Steiner. Anyone who says Bret wasn’t a draw I challenge you to look up the WWF roster from 1992-1996 and tell me if you would pay to see those cards. Bret was the ONLY thing keeping the company in business.
@Thor-Orion
@Thor-Orion Жыл бұрын
@@Longlostpuss Bret’s stuff has aged SO much better, which is the beauty of tape. Shawn botched on purpose A LOT to make the other wrestler look bad, even his friends like Diesel where he made a slight slip up look like a catastrophic botch when it was WELL within his ability to completely negate it and make it look perfectly normal. But if he did that then he would be the only one who knew that the other guy made a tiny mistake, and Shawn preferred making others look bad to making his matches the best they could be. Totally different philosophy. Now compare the mentality Shawn had when he made his comeback and tell me if his philosophy towards working with his opponent more closely resembles Shawn himself in his physical prime or Bret.

Hearing Sasso tell the story about Bret not wanting to walk into the bar with him cause of their "heat" reminds me of a story Bret told where He and Owen were in an airport not talking to each other because of their feud sitting back to back. Then Bret whispered something to Owen and noticed a little kid watching them and saying "I knew you didn't hate each other". I think that's how that story went. Why isn’t Will Sasso in the WWE HOF? He’s done so much more then most of the non wrestlers that are there.

I just had flashbacks listening to The Steve Austin Show podcast 10 years ago listening to Will’s impression of Austin’s casual monologue intro to his show 😆

Best thing about that match was Bobby The Brain’s commentary. Dude was solid gold in his jokes about Sass. Go watch it.

God damn, he really is a good impressionist. Bret is harder to impersonate than an Austin or Ventura, but he gets the inflection & cadence perfectly

One aspect of this story Sasso mentioned years ago about their WCW match, Bret asked Will if he wanted to get any offense in, to which Sasso said absolutely not. His reasoning is that you have this 5-time world champion stepping in the ring with not only a first-time competitor, but an actor. Sasso felt that there is no way in reality that an actor should get any offense on this experienced talent in their domain. Something that Vince and Bischoff never had any good sense to consider when they had celebrity involvement wrecking their stars.

Side thought: that Back to the future shirt, based on the delorean licence plate. So at one point in time, there was Doc sitting at a licence bureau waiting to apply for his licence plate.

Wrestlers that can adjust and call on the fly are a dying breed.

I want to agree, and that's a dying skill. However, planning a match isn't terrible when done right. Randy Savage was meticulous in his planning, and it looked better than most everyone else.

@@Danielson1818 , yes, but it's not either/or. Those are a dime a dozen now and most of them aren't good at planning it out and are unable to change on the fly unlike Mr. Poffo. Either way it's beside the point. It's like saying indoor shopping malls are a dying venue and you come back with saying that there are plenty of great big box stores. It's not really being discussed, you know?

then he def didn't take it too serious. The opposite of too serious would be this dudes interview with that clueless acrobat from planet fitness that's telling us how he planned a double down with his opponent before their match. Which would be worse? Send that fool back to the Indys for a couple years until he learns what he's doing
