13:33 I don't understand how the black router translates the "ping 10.0.0.2" into "ping 192.168.3.48", what if the black router had multiple vpn clients connected to it? why does it decide to "replace" 10.0.0.2 with the yellow routers IP. And also I don't understand where the privacy aspect is, for me it seems like that it is just an ecrypted connection.
@codyrap956 ай бұрын
13:50 - Thanks for finally saying that. I hate it when people say "a VPN is safer than a proxy because it's encrypted" which is simply not true. Both can be encrypted or unencrypted.

I'm also a big fan of WireGuard. The performance is just outstanding. Plus my Android phone is permanently connected to my VPN (it re-establishes the connection within milliseconds whenever I lose it, e.g. joining a foreign WLAN and connecting to LTE back again), so I can always use my home cloud. In new (or rooted) Androids the WIreGuard is possibly already directly into the kernel which brings power consumtion to a minimum.

Thanks Paul for this amazing video! Kind of ironic that one of the best (imo) videos about VPNs doesn't actually shill a VPN company...
@TallPaulTech3 жыл бұрын
Yeah, but I noticed afterwards that the ads that got picked to put on this video were those from those VPN companies. Oh well, I try :)

What a wonderful explanation of what a VPN, at its core, really is... great job! You just lost me a bit at the beginning when configuring the routes... is this video about VPNs or the joy of dynamic routing protocols? 😄

Nice explaining of routing / VPN. I would suggest a tutorial / explaining making a VPN connection that woks both way's. Normal VPN setup is Client > VPN > Home network. But not usable to get at the network at the Client side network. For example: @home : 2 laptops / Nas / Network Printer @parents-home: 1 server / laptop / Network Printer I figured out already how to set this up but this is quite a common issue people asked me to help them with. I'm using 2 Orange Pi's for that, One at my Mothers home and One at my place. The one at my Mothers home is connecting to my Pi. And i'm able to reach her computer and also the Network printer. Like ssh into all devices from both sides. I don't have the skills to explain / teach them to understand whats going on and how it works. Again i like your video's and point people to them when they asking something you already explained.

If you would like a suggestion for a video I would like to hear what you have to say (good , bad and ugly) about two or more Wi-Fi Access points (connected over ethernet), using the same SSID, different channels to extend Wi-Fi range. A poor man's extend wifi that don't want to spend the money on Instant Arubas.

The setup you just described is the correct way to go about it.
@thatcreole99134 жыл бұрын
I’ve personally been frustrated with this setup in the past. Specifically with how clients are seemingly bad at letting go and picking the stronger AP signal. Non zero chance I screwed up something though.
@maximepalandre634 жыл бұрын
@@thatcreole9913 I have a similar setup (2 AP connnected via ethernet with same SSID and password, on different channel) : I use Fast BSS transition (802.11r) with 802.11k and 802.11v and my clients changes AP automaticly without disconnecting to the network. You don't have to buy expensive AP. For exemple I use cheap AP but I installed OpenWrt on it
@garylovesbeer4 жыл бұрын
@@thatcreole9913 If you keep the AP power too high the clients do not let go of the current AP and move to the optimal AP. Set you APs to the minimum power needed to rmaintain signal in the area you are covering. This is the advice given by Unifi when setting up their APs. Works for me. I am happy to be corrected if my methodology is incorrect.

My home network is on 192.168.1.0. If I run the vpn on the same network, instead of 10.0.0.1, I get a warning when conection is established that it's unsafe to conect from say a cyber café? What are your thoughts on this?

Not relevant to this video but ever since I started using a switch connected to my modem/router I sometimes get a: No Internet Try: Checking the network cables, modem and router Reconnecting to Wi-Fi [Running Windows Network Diagnostics] DNS_PROBE_FINISHED_NO_INTERNET Chrome gives you this but other browsers do not. You can click the link and although it says that it didn't find any problem it does fix it but it often returns. Everything can work for days and then it gets temperamental. I never configured the switch just used it out of the box. Does the switch need configuring or do you know why it does this. If I bypass the switch everything seems to work. I hate technology sometimes. If it is not one thing it is another that doesn't work right.

The other advantage of using a home VPN, I use WireGuard, is that you can do DNS resolution via your PiHole. Bing. No ads! FTW!
