Cwynfan Prydery (Pryderi's Lament): Welsh Song by Ceredwen

This song reflects the tale from the third cycle of Welsh's epic Mabinogion, about Pryderi and his mother, Rhiannon, who succumbed into a curse planted by the old foe of Pryderi's father.
Pryderi, the son of the Horse Goddess Rhiannon, succeeded his father Pwyll as the Chieftain of Dyfed. When he was throwing a banquet celebrating his mother's marriage with the Sea God's son Manawydan, there was a peal of thunder and mist fell. When the mist cleared, the land was desolate and barred of animals or people except Pryderi, his wife Cigfa, Rhiannon, and Manawydan.
After years living of wild game and fish, the four decided to travel to Lloegyr (England), but Manawydan and Prydery's skills as craftsmen made them enemies of many. They came back to the ruined castle, where Pryderi and his mother were trapped under the spell of a golden bowl fastened by four chains on a marble slab; the spell had been put by the wife of Pwyl's old enemy, Llwyd. Under that spell, Prydery and Rhiannon were forced to work as donkeys. Eventually, Manawydan was able to catch the perpetrator, freed both mother and son, and cleared the land from the curse.

Manawydan tried his hand at several trades, and excelled to the point of driving his competitors out of business -- whereupon they conspired to kill him, forcing him to move away from each of his homes in Lloegr. I had a friend who changed his last name to Manawydan, to express his goal of excellence. Also because he didn't like the name Slaba. :-p
