Here are The 5 Biggest Mistakes ❌ that Cyber Security Professionals Make. If you Want a Great Career, Don’t Do This:
Every day we are challenged with what to learn, how to learn, what certs to get, what boot camp to take. But are we ever really told the things that we SHOULDN’T do? Here are a few:
1. Be the smartest person in the room.
If you are, you are in the wrong room. This industry is about staying on the edge, learning, using resources, and always acquiring new knowledge. If you are the smartest person in the room, you will go stale.
2. Be arrogant.
No one likes arrogance. Be that person that people want to be around. Make them feel comfortable talking to you. Don't make them feel like they are asking dumb questions.
3. Be a one-upper.
Come on, we all have an associate that is a one-upper that has done everything just a little bit better than you have. You don't always have to be better than everyone.
4. Sandbox yourself.
Don't get stuck trying to learn one thing. This field is very broad. I have found that you don't have to be the best at anything, but you have to be really good at many things. It is harder to be successful if you isolate your learning. For example, I never claim to be the best penetration tester, the best auditor, or security guy in general, but the success has come from being able to sit in a room and talk fluently about nearly anything relating to cyber security and being able to back it up with performance.
5. Be quiet.
Being quiet will get you nowhere. Be seen, be heard. Build a people network and interact with them. Help where you can help by answering questions that you have knowledge about. Help people.
Obviously there isn’t enough room in this post to list them all. Which ones am I missing?
If you are struggling with your career or even getting into Cyber Security, I’m here to help. If you want free advice, go to www.breakincyb....

I am just starting my journey, Dont be stuck on your way is the right way and unteachable. I think being teachable is a big one, knowing there is always more room to learn, grow and embace new perspectives

How do you get over the "don't be quiet" part if you're an introvert, such as myself? Like I like interacting with people, but I find it hard to personally put myself out there and be heard/seen. And when interacting with most people, I quickly run out of things to say. How can I improve upon this to be successful in this field? What's the best and easiest way to network and make those connections that can help take me farther in the field? I am good at technology and interested in studying Cyber Security, and I am currently going for my Associates with the hope of being able to transfer to a Bachelors program in the next year and a half or so! But still, I've seen a few videos where people say that same point - networking is essential in this field. As an introvert, how can I do this? Have any tips? I appreciate your pointers though! I'll keep them in mind for sure! Thanks for the video! 😄👍

This is a great question honestly. Do what you are comfortable with at first. LinkedIn is about the best place to network. Build yourself a nice profile, and start surrounding yourself with people that you can learn from. You don't have to post, but you can start with just some simple engagement.

don't overthink it just be relaxed and breathe with ur nose and you'll naturally find things to say and you don't always have to talk, leave room for others to speak, people love to talk about themselves so its always a good way to keep the convo going by asking them something and listening best tip probly is exercise a lot like calisthenics ur gonna feel more confident and happy from working out, that's probly the key u need to be kind to urself and value urself, if u dont rn then its best to analyze ur vices and get rid of them. its a frequency thing ppl dont wanna hang around miserable ppl so force urself to think positively all the time and smile, think of the ways its gonna work and the solution stay stoic dont define urself as an introvert never label urself like this u can reinvent urself anytime any day into who u would like to be then back it up with action and discipline and strong self talk

Some good points! I am currently trying to break into the cybersecurity field by applying at SOC analyst roles. I have a bachelors degree in IT and the Network + certificate. I am aiming to take my CySA+ certificate exam by February. I also have completed some projects but am still struggling to get interviews.

Sounds like you are on the right path. Keep in mind that you also have to make connections as well. Get yourself out there in front of other people in the field, recruiters, etc.

@@ruslanbedoev9264 I figured there was a bit of overlap with the net+ and sec+. I decided if I was going to spend 400 dollars on a test, might as well be something more specific toward the security analyst role. But I agree I don’t have anything that screams cybersecurity on my resume.

Hello Mike thanks for the advice. Started my journey in 2021 w/ GenerationUSA now it’s ChooseU. - 16 week bootcamp( teaching basics on Linux, Python and RIDDLES LOTS OF RIDDLES) At the end towards the 16th week you’ll get a voucher/s for certs. (Splunk, etc) After the bootcamp I went job hunting although I was told we would transition into roles at a partnered company. Search went blank (I didn’t have enough experience) I applied to entry level Cybersecurity Analyst roles. After 2022 I paused my search and picked up Data. Fast fwd to here 2024 My goal is secure a SOC analyst pos. overnight 10-6 am| 11-7am | 12-8am EST So I’m doing research on what should I know, what will I do on the day to day(night to night technically’), and how to continuously update my software(brain) - So I’m always an asset to a company or the market of(cybersecurity) So I’m here Mike subscribed and all. I’ll do my best to be a consistent sub. 🤝
