This is what a real sword fight looks like, especially in the context of celtic or Anglo saxon warfare- heavy swords, the sounds of the blade cutting through the air. Today's movies rely too much on CGI and over choreography. In a real battle, warriors would be missing blows, tripping up, getting off balance, shouting, managing their weapons e.t.c.

No Conan is not underrated. Am I the only one left on youtube who understands the definition of the very simple word, underrated, as it pertains to movies? Conan was a big box office success and its legacy includes every last sword and sorcery film since 1982, as it was the first movie to really demonstrate a viable market for that genre. Though critic’s reviews were mixed, there is 0 indication the movie has ever fallen out of favor with audiences since its 1982 debut. CTB is not an Underrated movie.

What I love about this movie, is the dark connection he has to Tulsa Doom and his warriors. They killed his family which set in motion, the events of his life from slavery to being a gladiator and then becoming a warrior. Rexor and Tholgrim were already big, strong warriors when they meet Conan as a child. But then when he grows up, he's able to match and then surpass them in strength and skill.

Conan breaking his father's sword is such a great visual metaphor for Conan's growth. He's done letting his trauma define him and is ready to move on from the past. I also feel that Conan finally _really_ understood his Father was wrong about the Riddle of Steel and that Doom was right, when Conan's father's sword breaks. We see his father _cast_ the sword in the opening sequence. At the end, Conan sits and ponders: the beginning of Conan's journey was his father's role, the end was Doom's and now Conan is just Conan, but the product of both.
@hisdudeness8328
@hisdudeness8328 3 жыл бұрын
@@bbb462cid actually, they were both wrong. Conan's father's sword broke in battle, showing that steel can become brittle and break over time. Conan chopped off Doom's head, and his zelot followers began to drift away now that they were leaderless, showing that flesh is also weak. It was a moment of immense symbolism when Conan held both up, one in each hand, then cast them both aside. In that moment, he had discovered the true riddle of Steele. It's neither metal or flesh, it's the conviction of one's will. His will kept him alive all those years, honed him into a formidable warrior to physically defeat Doom's minions, and gave him the mental strength to resist Doom's mind games.

@@hisdudeness8328 sorry but you're wrong. The ensuing 20 years did not make the sword weak. Firstly, the Atlantean sword Conan found in the bural mound was _much_ older than the sword that broke. Secondly, Conan's father *cast* that sword that broke. If you know anything about materials like steel, you will know that of _course_ the casting broke, But Conan's father placed his trust in it. So he was wrong. Doom has _already told_ Conan about the force of will and demonstrated it himself when the girl jumped to her death. He gave Conan the last clue just before Doom sentenced Conan to death. That proved Doom right. Did you forget that scene? Doom tells Conan "Look at the strength in your body, the desire in your heart". Conan used both his strength AND his will. Conan used Doom's own revelation against him. I agree 100% about the symbolism but it was Conan casting aside these two fathers.

I always loved the prayer scene. I always imagined Crom spitting out his mead in Valhalla when Conan says “And if you do not listen, then the hell with you!” He would look at all the warrior spirits and they would look at Crom like “Oooh…” He’d be angry, but also determined. And at the end, when a victorious Conan raises his swords in praise to Crom, Crom we be “There you go! Was that what you wanted? You’re welcome.” And then he’d go back to drinking mead.

@Nature Of The Beast Sure. I have the benefit of reading most of Howards work so here goes. The movie is about, simply, justice. Conan's Life was destroyed/changed by Thulsa Doom. In doing that Doom created his own destruction in the man that Conan would become. Doom has a history of doing stuff like that. The movie is about that journey. From Lost Boy to Conquering King. This movie is about the first part of that journey. About the anger of a boy becoming the driving force for a man's life and his continuing to exist after he has completed that drive. Also it's just a great sword and sorcery movie beside the deconstruction.

Some things I noticed here. 1. This scene is the only time someone survives being successfully hit by Thorgrim‘s warhammer. 2. Rexor could’ve survived just a little longer had he not panicked after Conan slashed his stomach and broke the sword that once belonged to his father. Once Conan got him in the neck, it was over for him. 3. Thorgrim’s outfit in this scene is the same as what he wore during the scenes where Conan infiltrates the Temple of Set and capture/interrogation. The only differences in the outfit in this scene is different bracers and a helmet. In fact, Rexor and Thorgrim wear different outfits in almost every scene they’re in. Though Rexor is seemingly the only one of the two among Thulsa Doom’s main lieutenants to have a high priest’s robes. 4. Some of the props in this movie, like the horned helmets with the spikes that go from front to back by some of Doom’s soldiers, are also worn by Queen Taramis’ guards in Conan the Destroyer. Thorgrim’s left spiked bracer in this scene is also repurposed for Bombaata for most of the film. Rexor’s armor in this scene, specifically the cuirass, is worn by one of Queen Taramis’ Elite Guards, who is later killed by Zula in the forest scene. I was gonna mention more stuff, but that was all I could think of. Sorry if this was too long.

What I think the most under appreciated part of this scene is is the trap Conan placed. Conan knows from first hand experience the night before he can’t take on Rexor and Thulgrum (I think that’s how his name’s spelled?) at the same time and he also saw Thulgrum swings his hammer around wildly to the point that he almost killed Rexor the night before. So Conan’s solution was to make a trap that no one else would fall for and is a pressure plate so a blunt object has to hit it with enough force. His teachings in the ways of war from the beginning come in to play by ensuring Thulgrum’s out of the way in a manner only he could fall for
@bigd7696
@bigd7696 Жыл бұрын
The trap is because they were 2 warriors and an old man against a bloody platoon of soldiers. You figure Conan knew that one particular guy would be walking around in exactly the right spot, see it at exactly the right time, and swing away? Read the books, Conan wouldn't have been worried about facing off against anybody, but he also is not tactically stupid so he is going to do everything possible to level the playing field and get an advantage.

Modern films seem to be made for people who have attention deficit disorders who just want to watch constant CGI affects played as fast as they can, it seems these day all you have to do his hire Hollywood pretty boys and buy as much CGI as you can afford, forget the screenplay, forget the characters, forget character building, forget the story building, forget everything that makes a film good, people will watch a new film and then forget it because it is not worth remembering, but good films will be remembered for generations.

They actually did a far better job on the battle scenes than I remembered them doing. It wasn't overly flashy, the injuries and wounds were more realistic. He'll slash one of them and it would bleed (which half the movies don't really show), but didn't have it bleeding like it came from Evil Dead 2, with an inhuman amount of blood would be produced. Plus they didn't have them wearing full chest armor, only to be killed because the other guy slashed them across the belly where apparently even heavy plate will only provide the protection level of a wet paper towel laid across your chest, for some reason.
