We know what raising tariffs on China did to the farmers. As a result we tripled subsidies to reduce the impact.

Dudes argument is "tariff so complicated... Math too hard." Uh no, we know very well how to model the effects of tariffs. Historically they have been some of the easiest monetary levers to model. Empirically they almost always have the same immediate effects in an economy that is highly dependant on imports they will freeze trade in a trade war scenario, they will raise prices, they might lead to domestic resourcing but only if the labor costs & resource availability for missing imports are cost conducive. This math may be too hard for this guest but it's very easy if you just think it through and as I said we have history showing us what has happened.. The immediate outcome is never beneficial to the economy of a highly trade dependant system like ours.
