‘Cybersecurity issue’ at MGM resorts causing outages, company says

MGM Resorts International says a “cybersecurity issue” may have impacted reservation systems and casino floors at several properties in Las Vegas, Maryland, New Jersey, and others. KSNV’s Brett Forrest reports.

And this is why you have a manual failover for everthing. The entire casino floor should be completelty segregated, local only, no internet connection, and manual updates by admins only. Some things are best left old school. Our nuclear launch grid is offline for good reason. This should be too.

@@humanbeing-001 The first Casino was built around 1632. The first slot machine was around 1894. The internet was invented in 1983. It’s actually very easy to implement. In my opinion, MGM’s biggest problem is having all of their systems interconnected. The goal was to make stuff like parking passes available at all hotel locations, virtual hotel keys, and easier access to the casino. The problem is that all in one connectivity is a huge weak point. Makes infiltration much easier because they can be attacked from any location. I’d take away those features and run each hotel/casino as it’s own independent entity. Sure, it takes some convenience away from the customer and IT staff. But it makes the point of attacks more singular to a specific location. And taking it a step further by segregating the casino from everything else. That adds another layer of complexity for protection. Just an idea.
