There is a caveat though - Simply installing and having it run won't really provide much "weight" if that makes sense. I would encourage you to poke a bit more and add custom blocklists and learn how it can really help your home network. Essentially, play around with this until you are confident you can have a conversation.

I don’t, I have a server dedicated for VMs but you can use VMware Fusion to spin up VMs

I wouldn’t but you can definitely try. I cant remember off the top but you can check to see if pfsense have any services that are similar to pihole that you can install on top of it.
