If someone tells you concept art is dead, they're telling you imagination is dead. Also enjoyed the "arch nemesis" story. Everyone needs a rival to work against, even if that rival isn't real.

This video really helped to rekindle my fire of being a concept artist. Wearing multiple hats as an indie designer or comic artist through my drawing skillset is exactly what I am working towards and you remind me that its feasible. Really great character design and I learned that you can take the backpack you drew, copy it over, and just draw the rest without redrawing the entire thing. Never thought of that would have saved me a lot of time on my work... haha

Hearing your commentary while i digitally paint is really inspiring actually. I do a little bit of everything in art and I've been at it for 6 years almost 7 (still trying real hard to find my signature style) but listening to you it's just like something in me kinda clicks to tell me just do this and go with the flow.

I just recently found your channel. And I am glad I did. I am new to art I have been drawing for about a year and I am trying to get my first product launched this next year. 🤞 But not only was the art and rendering amazing but the content made me even more impressed with your content and you as a person. Thank you for always putting your soul into everything that you do. You are a true inspiration.

Hello fella... Been following the channel for some time now, promising myself I will make a leap in to colour work. This is the first time I've commented... I actually really needed this video right now... 46 years old, been working in comics pretty much exclusively the last 10-15 years, before that owned my own studio and worked in concept design for about 7-8 years and got my break in to comics prior that... all in all, been working as someone who draws for a living for 20-25 years... Times have changed Last few years I'd really started to notice that being able to draw maybe wasn't enough if I wanted to keep going with an art career. Comics, at least working for the likes of Marvel or DC was getting harder and harder. Deadlines are getting shorter and theres no end of artists who are happy to churn the work out... truth is I want my work to look the best it can, which means current deadlines get really tight, even if I do 18hour days 7 days a week... which I do frequently. Back when I started and the work was mailed, scripts and finished pages, deadlines were much longer with room to take time on the important pages or issues and make up that time elsewhere. Now with such quick turn arounds theres just not that time. I had an injury recently and just having that slow me down for the two weeks completely screwed a print schedule... That never would have happened before. Anyway, I'm waffling. So I've been looking toward making the break from that for a while. I realised I needed to take things to the next level and at least be able to add colour to my work, at a professional level if I wanted to spread my wings a little... get back in to concept work and back in to creator owned properties. And then photo bashing exploded and all I kept seeing was video after video of some guy who cant draw putting together these amazing images in next to no time, usually quicker than I could sketch it. And they are amazing images, some of them at least. But time after time they were telling people art was dead and who cares if you can draw... we don't need to anymore... photos and 3d is where its at. One guy in particular (whether you have a rival or not ;) saying that anyone who tells you that the fundamentals of art are important, its not going to get you far. Ignore the fundamentals and just make robots... hmmmmmmm Truth is I believed them... at first. Last few months I really started to take note of a lot of those videos, and listening too this has really helped as well, especially watching you draw and develop at the same time. What I noticed was those guys who just bash photos, largely, are making images that have no concept (and always seems ever so slightly off). Everything becomes a construct of something that went before, that lack of being able to draw and visualise first leaves them falling woefully short on a design level... If you watch a photobasher, a lot of the time they go with that first pass on something, a vehicle design or layout etc. But watching you draw this, just the guys backpack straps, you rework, change, adjust, redetail, redetail again... you hardly ever see someone photobashing do that... photbashers tend to mood something, they don't design it. Photobashing is like kitbashing. take existing parts and make something new. Kitbashing has been very successful for years and years and years... some of our iconic visuals came from kitbashing... star wars, every ship and gun... But... The difference is someone drew those designs first and then someone bashed it... Concept art is the same. The best of the concept artists can still draw, the best photobashers are those that paint back in to those photos, not just throw photos together. Photobashers will become two a penny, just like mediocre artists. But thats all they'll be because they don't take the time to really try and push themselves, like mediocre artists. Those who can really draw and design, and then add the colour, or photos or however else they want to spice up their visuals, those are the guys... and girls for sure... who will continue to rise. They'll be the lead concept designers, the managers of hordes of photobashers and mediocre artists... I recently kitbashed a combat smart car using sketchup, which everyone seemed to love... the reason I feel it worked, and took me very little time (finding the parts was harder than making the model) is because 15 years ago I'd already drawn it on paper and designed it, building the model became a case of replicating the design with the parts I could find. Proportions, balance and ideas were already there from 15 years previous. It is a scary prospect right now for a guy my age, stuck in a rut if I'm honest, fearing change and having to retrain to tackle a market awash with incredible looking art and artists who've been at the colour work their whole careers... knowing that a lot of employers still cant really see the difference between those who can draw, and those who can make a pretty visual with photos and a couple of filters. But... I do know that like before, if I focus and work hard, as you say, there is always a place for those who can draw... always... and so back to it I go. Thanks for the videos, they've been a huge help and inspiration.... I'm back to working on Bazooka Jules, and developing my colour and concept skills and you've played a big part in that. Fingers crossed I can develop a tenth of the colour skill you have. Best Neil

do some comic book artists photo bash???
@neilgooge
@neilgooge 8 жыл бұрын
Some do, it depends on the artist... I use it for backgrounds and the like. Photobash an image together of what I need for the background then use that as my reference to draw it. Though I tend to kit bash in sketchup now far more than I photobash. But Stuart Immonen is well known for photobashing figures... yep... you read that right, figures. Especially if he needs to draw something less than human. He released his reference images for when he was drawing Beta Ray Bill (thor with a horses skull for a head) he would photobash body builders together and then add the skulls for heads to make these weird frankensteins monsters to reference from :) I think all creative skills and disciplines have their use in any medium, so while comic artists aren't photobashing for finished imagery, some use it in the way I mention. Some of the stuff I want to learn is more so I am able to branch out a little as I'd like to launch a table top game, and so colour art will be essential... just need to find which mix of skills work well for me as its easy to get lost in whats "right or wrong" when watching tutorials and the like on line. :)

On the contrary, this is my favorite commentary so far. I was just thinking I wish you'd done more mechanical-type stuff (bonus). And as I've commented before, I'm trying to improve my digital art and at this juncture its starting to get pretty challenging. You preached to the choir at just the right time and I like thinking that my art has inherent value whether someone is paying for it or not. So thank you. Also, please do a video with an underwater type exploration for a sea creature or a submarine or something. Underwater lighting and atmospheric perspective is an appealing subject to me.

dude, I got the same thing on the 3D side, people are saying...facial scanning and photogrammetry is the future of 3D game art...but good luck finding style. I prefer to study and do it all from scratch.
@harrysanders818
@harrysanders818 5 жыл бұрын
I once heard the phrase: "You cant scan what doesnt exist" (Marc Brunet said that in one of his videos)- pretty much cleared it up for me on even thinking about taking all that scan trend seriously. Never ever will that help any artist other than being ashortcut for achieving some lifelessand eerie photorealism, which is not art. Im with you man. Studying my ass off to be able to create what I want. How unsatisfying it would be to jus scan me something, clean it up and call it day. Tops: You cant fool people who know about art and sellt them your hyperrealistic bust as a superb art piece. With no knowledge of composition and design and so on. Doesnt work that way. Most people fall forand think of art as realism. But even those, without knowing it, would subconsciously choose a well made emotion triggering composition over any boring down to the tertiary skin pore realism piece.

Man, I was spitting out my breakfast cereal while watching this. "As Yoda said", lol you just won the argument there. I don't have strong feelings about photobashing, since it's a cool technique to add some realism or texture to your creations, but yeah, there's a few artists making everything out of photos, and that's just.... soul-less and very boring if you ask me. I guess they can't fake it forever. Keep the good work coming, Trent!

So, question: I know that you do the sort of grayscale coloring using blending layers, but are there other ways of doing this? I like the look, however my program I have been using does not have these layer capabilities and I also am sort of uncomfortable in doing stuff like that (I'm not very good). But if there is another starter way to color like that or any tips to help me I'd really appreciate it. My issue right now is all my drawings feel really empty without some sort of shading like done in this video with the grayscale

Even from a business perspective, funnelling out quick copy-paste designs isn't wise either. Thought-out, well rendered designs demand higher premiums and now art books are a huge thing for games too. It's like getting a cake from either a dollar store, grocery store, or a bakery. Consumers can buy a cake at each price point, but the experience and the premium you pay will ensure different quality. There will always be people who will want a cake from a bakery, and it's the same with hand-drawn vs. copy/paste designs in games. I agree with what you're saying, and I have the same philosophy, but there will always be someone buying cake from a dollar store and that's also business for people with a strict view on efficiency. I think drawing is different with photo bashing... photo bashing is kinda collage mixed with drawing and painting... I dont care if people said tradisional drawing is dead... it's exist since stone age and never dead...
