You can cycle from Wood Green in north London to Leyton in east London entirely on quiet streets and protected cycle lanes.
The route is 10km long (6.3 miles) and makes use of low traffic neighbourhoods (LTNs) in Haringey and Waltham Forest, as well as protected lanes along Forest Road, Markhouse Lane, and elsewhere.
The journey takes around 35 minutes to ride, which is significantly faster than the public transport options available.

Your videos are a highlight of my week-great to wake up to this one-excellent as ever and a really interesting route. LTNs are clearly the way forward, why there seems to be so much resistance is quite beyond me.

@14:00...re: cycling symbols indicating reverse direction. That's double-jeopardy for me, being British, but now assimilated to right hand running by living in North Am. That really threw me for a loop! It reminds me of my sojourns back in Blighty over the years, my first one some forty years after emigrating as a child. I could 'manually' reprogram the senses to be aware of cars coming 'on the wrong side'....but the impression of a 'passenger but no driver' coming at me overloaded the senses. That's what I got with inverted symbol direction indications. Loving these rides!

Those blue signs - or at least the ones on the similar route through Broadwater Farm - have been around since at least the 1990s as I used that route at that time, and the signs were already pretty old by them, so I think they may be a legacy of the 1980s GLC network. Those roads were quiet in the 1990s, showing how the clock has been turned back by the LTN.

Yeah I think the project name the signs are attached to is the London Cycle Network (LCN) which was a GLC project

Always pleased to see Bike Hangars, amazingly there are none in Birmingham! I queried that with The Mayor's office and he thinks they are a great idea but it seems no-one is asking for them and he wants suggestions as to where they could go. I don't know of any cycling lobby groups in Birmingham so I can't take it any further but I am certain there are areas that would benefit.

Yeah that’s one way of doing it- where possible I try to avoid river/canal paths for long stretches in videos as a lot of people don’t like them due to sharing with pedestrians and not great at night etc

Ferry Road’s segment of (what is now) C24 was actually Haringey’s work (the boundary where Forest Road begins), though I don’t think it would have happened if it weren’t for Waltham Forest’s work on improving access to the Wetlands along Forest Rd.

Interesting, I assumed their bit was only the black wanded section - it’s good! they are not awful with having the odd lane though they tend to do nothing with junctions

Great video thanks. Regarding cycle hangers' cost - it's not just a London issue. When I moved up to Glasgow I had a cycle hanger space (same design as the ones in the video) which cost me £80/year but the on street parking for my car was free, and I could almost always park closer to my flat than the hanger was. Always seemed to me to be the wrong way around.
@Londoncycleroutes
@Londoncycleroutes Жыл бұрын
interesting, didn't know glasgow had them - and totally agree about the pricing. I guess there's an argument for having a charge if it means councils can roll them out quicker to meet demand but maybe better to charge the carparking..

Today I used this route in reverse from Tottenham Hale station to Alexandra Palace station. The Bruce Grove LTN is superb. Very easy cycling until I got to the other side of the HIgh Road. Parkland Road (which you get to via a crossing of the High Road right where your video starts) is not too bad, but you then end up on Station Road with some very poor narrow painted lanes with a few bollards. These give up about 50m from the station at the entrance to Heartlands High school so I got off and pushed. It could very easily be so much better.
@Londoncycleroutes
@Londoncycleroutes Жыл бұрын
Completely agree - stepped tracks for station road and a bus boarder at the stops would sort it out. There used to be more wands but motorists have gradually destroyed them

I like watching videos of cycle tracks and routes in other parts of the UK. I wish we had more like these in Aberdeen, Scotland. It's a bit of a shame that at 7:44 the driver turning at the T-junction didn't give way to you - they should have as you were going straight ahead.

Yes good point about that driver! I like Aberdeen, always had a nice time when I’ve visited - though yeah I dont remember it being great for cycling! Hopefully other cities will start to pick up this kind of stuff more now it’s more common in London and the battle to get it done will be easier

@@Londoncycleroutes Yeah! Aberdeen is not diabolical for cycling - even though the cycle-specific infrastructure is lacking, I find that drivers are really tons more careful and considerate than in England!
