I live in Worthing and cycled to work in Brighton for about 4 years, regardless of the weather. The winter rides home were into a swirling south-westerly coastal wind and it could be unbelievably brutal quite often. I'm talking flying debris, beach pebbles being blown into the path. What is worse though is the side winds. There are a few points on the ride where you have to brace yourself for a sudden, vicious side wind (imagine being violently pushed from the side by an invisible thug). That being said, I really enjoyed the battle against the elements (cycling isn't cycling without a sadistic edge is it?).

Sounds Brutal!😱 Would you give the headwind championships a go? You've got the experience 🤔

Sounds a little like riding around Corpus Christi Texas in the spring. Many times I have cleaned dirt from inside my ears after a ride with 40 mph crosswinds. Once with a tailwind, I was able to maintain a speed of about 20 mph for several miles without turning the cranks once.
@Cyclingdavp123 Жыл бұрын

It's tough to maintain 10 miles per hour on the flat going into a strong wind coming off the sea here in the UK even if you normally cruise along at 20mph. It's not all that rare in winter on seaside roads, especially ones with a south-westerly bearing, to see winds that can slow you down to walking pace and strong gusts than can momentarily bring you to a standstill.
