Live sports photography day - the London Leg of the Tour of Britain Cycling.
Read more and see some photos on my blog at allam.co/rn9w2
During the day, I took a tonne of panning shots. As many people has asked, I've also included a little segment on how to get panning photography shots at sports events.
I hope you enjoy my day as much as I did!

Wow man, watching through the archives ☺️ To be honest, my backup would be very much similar to all other shoots. Import to one drive as normal and then copy over to a second drive at the very least 👍

It seems to be the worst bag for this particular event. You have to have an assistant to care for the bag itself.

+Joe Allam I love all of your videos about gear (kind of an gear addict). I thinks it is good that you have as mixed content as you have now. You have some how found the balance. And all your videos are great. I don't know if I have any bad criticism at the moment. (Sorry if my English isn't fully correct, I'm from Sweden)

Dude I think you was rather brave taking out your gear in full view of potential thieves. Trust me, this is coming from a man whose gear has been stolen twice whilst out on shoots. Great video by the way. You now have a new subscriber. 🙂
@joeallam
@joeallam 8 жыл бұрын
+Toyin Oshodi yeah I guess so, but then I often feel like these sorts of events are actually much safer than going out on a normal day. There's a lot of people around, for sure, but the majority of those people are good people and I often find they take such an interest in what I'm working on, that they're almost my eyes and ears for added security. There's also generally a large police presence too that will put you at ease should anything happen. I've never once felt at risk or in a compromised position. It's sad to hear that you've fallen victim twice though - was it during big events such as this or on personal shoots?

Hey! Newbie question here. Do you shot this with manual mode or shutter mode? Thanks! Great Video too!
@joeallam
@joeallam 7 жыл бұрын
For sports, I use 100% manual. Oftentimes, the secret is to use auto ISO. That way you can manually choose your aperture and shutter speed, but maintain consistent exposures!

Great Video as per usual. I was wondering how much FPS do I really need to capture images like that? My current camera has 3.7, is that sufficient enough? And again, great video I enjoy watching your videos, they inspire me to take better pics :)
@joeallam
@joeallam 9 жыл бұрын
+Francis Canto Thank you - I'm pleased my videos inspire you, that's one of my main goals! Honestly, the FPS of your camera doesn't matter for getting shots like this. I could take these images as a single shot rather than a burst, if I had to. The benefit of a burst is that you're able to get more photos each time, which limits your chances of missing the timing. As I mentioned in the video it's all about timing the shot rather than just holding down a burst. If you can match the speed of the subject and time your shot perfectly, you could do this in a single shot each time! It just takes a lot of practice! You also don't necessarily need as large an aperture as you do for other sports shots, because the background will be blurry from the panning and your shutter speed will be slow enough to let in quite a lot of light anyway. If your lens is particularly slow, you can also disable the auto focus and manually focus to the point that you know the subject will travel through. Then it's just a matter of timing the shot! I hope that helps you out!

Hey Joe, nice video. Quick question: Do you do these videos on your own? (Are you out and about by yourself all day?) Also, I have two peli 1510 cases. They are so robust and fit in the overhead bins on planes. I only use the when I'm doing weddings or travelling though, because of the amount of gear that I take. Normally, if I'm walking about in Liverpool or at an event, I tend to use a Think Tank Retro 30. Personally, I find that it suits my needs. Regards, Ryan ps, I'm now looking at folding stools on eBay!!!
@joeallam
@joeallam 9 жыл бұрын
Thanks Ryan! Yes I do make these videos all independently. It's a long hard day getting photography of the event and making a video at the same time, then going and editing both photography and video, PLUS a long blog post - but I love it! I'd love a Pelican case, they look solid. If ever I got a big video rig or drone, I'd definitely look to them for a way to carry it around. I think I will still use my backpacks for the majority of my shoots. This bag, which will primarily become my main bag for travelling between long distance locations or flying etc. Those folding stools can be found in DIY stores or similar, if you want to have a proper look at them. They're very very useful!

@joeallam

+Michele Coggiola Haha true! To be honest, it would take a lot to burst a can in a protective camera bag, but you're right, anything can happen. On this particular occasion, I was travelling with _just_ the rolling case. On other shoots, I would probably have a backpack or a coat at least to carry my personal items.

Hello how are you? Congratulations on the video, I just found it in a KZbin search. Can you help me understand something? How can I, a Brazilian photographer, work as a freelancer in sporting events such as races, obstacle races, trail races, etc.? Is there any company that hires foreigners to work as freelancers? If yes, what do you need? My intention is to start at the beginning of 2024 at sporting events around the world. My dream is to be a sports photographer around the world covering this together with a team. It's a shame that here in Brazil we don't have much information about access in America and Europe. I thank you for your attention.

I don't do the claps for these types of vlogs because there's no separate audio source to sync up. Sometimes I think of doing them for the routine, but in all honesty it's as much as practical clap as it is a tradition!

Omg I want your equipment !! What do you work to spend so much money on so expensive gear ? Great video :) love your videos ... Sorry for my bad English...:/
@joeallam
@joeallam 9 жыл бұрын
Haha! It's a collection of equipment that I have been building up for many years now. I work for myself as an independent creative doing all sorts of projects from design to photography, filmmaking and web development. So my equipment is very much needed for my work which makes a lot of these purchases quite expensive as I go for premium products. The price of the equipment is not what makes the shot though. The price of the equipment is what brings reliability and production quality!

@joeallam

+Carl Rug I hope you're not thinking I edit all of my photos on my iPhone with the VSCOcam app. It's quite unknown to many that VSCO primarily produce a large collection of film emulation "bases" for Lightroom/Photoshop and not just the app. It's essentially the same output as the old analogue days of choosing which film stock to use when taking photos e.g. Kodak Portra 160, Agfa 50 etc. These films produce subtle nuances in colour reproduction that are now somewhat lost in today's digital environment. I occasionally (not always) use some film emulations from VSCO in Lightroom when processing my RAW files and then if necessary-depending on the photo-I will continue to edit in Photoshop. If you'd like to see how I edit a lot of my photos in Photoshop, I have a video about my workflow here: kzbin.info/www/bejne/jnnCZZmLg52Lh7c Occasionally I will also edit a photo entirely on my iPhone, if I am purely after convenience for the sake of an Instagram post for example. If you'd like to see my workflow for that, it's here: kzbin.info/www/bejne/fIK7ZqKAqbaSnLs
