Main thing to remember that at the top, where the ski buildings are, it's cold up until summer. You will need a windbreaker going down which you can take off around windy point or so where it's about 10-20 degrees warmer. I made that mistake when I rode up and ended up having to ask for a large plastic garbage bag at the ski eatery to fabricate a make-shift windbreaker for the ride down. You don't really notice the cold pedaling up as you are working hard and generating a lot of heat.

Most people would consider riding up to Windy Point a major accomplishment. Windy Point was also my last stop on my first try of Mt. Lemmon. The calories per mile is what I was not used to, burning over 120 c per mile, when, in other rides, the average was 40 to 60 cals per mile.

yeah no doubt, I think I made it as far as just Thimble Peak, but of course the next day I did ride the 102 mile for Tour de Tucson. A handful of years ago now; I need to come back.

Man that was a struggle. Have fun getting your fitness back! It's pretty easy getting 95% of it back. You're right to not push through the pain, theres nothing to prove and it will just set you back further.

Another great video Ricky. I've only done that climb once and I'll never forget. All the way to the top. 90 degrees at the bottom. Snow at the top. The descent was brutal due to the cold. Hope you're enjoying Tucson.

Beetroot juice before the ride will give you a extra boost, try at least two cups at least 2-3 hrs before. But make certain your body has gotten use to it. Otherwise you will be making pit stops trying it for the first time

Question about your bike tires. Do you ride with standard tires or use Armadillo tires or something similar? Thanks - I enjoy your stuff.

What gears are you going to change to? What do you think would be the perfect setup?
@CyclingVirgin4 жыл бұрын
gearing is hard to suggest as there are so many rider variables. If I had to make a blanket recommendation just to cover my myself I would say go full compact (50/34) with a 11/32 cassette. Its the safe move as it covers pretty much all levels of riders that would be trying this climb. Now if we use 3 watts per kilo as a point of reference point on what the rider can hold for 2 hours I would think they would have no problems with a mid compat (52-36) and a 11-28 cassette. I hope this helps and I may do a fallow up video talking more about my thoughts and experience with the climb.

Please eat more, one thing pro cyclist do is fuel, fuel, fuel. I'm not trolling, but I've seen other channels denounce intermittent fasting for cyclists. IMO it doesn't make sense to exercise under fulled. I started cycling back in 2012, rode hundreds of miles/week lost 30lbs & never skipped a meal. Now I'm 40 & my body still reacts quickly to calorie deficit, but I put coconut oil in almost everything, just to add calories. Last yr, after not training particularly hard my body nuked pounds off by doing 2 a days, & as you said not eating late at night. Good luck with your nutrition & exercise.

I think you confused where to place this comment Cryto, but I will respond here as you are correct but out of context. Please understand right away that for this Lemmon attempt I fueled the same way I do for a race. I ate before and during the climb as well as right after. I preheated the day before and of course drank what I needed the day of. All of this is very common knowledge and should be a duh when it comes to a hard training ride or a race. Now the video you are referring to is my "How to lose weight while cycling" I never once said anything about hard training rides or races. That video is meant for people who have NEVER and maybe will NEVER ride there bikes "hard". Stop thinking of yourself and think about others for a min and the people who tool around the bike paths for 30mins to an hour not wearing a helmet thinking they are "exercising" then wounding why there arnt losing any weight. The video was meant to help them. This channel is really to try and help those riders and people at that level of fitness. NO they dont need to use a gel during there ride, NO they dont need to have a PB and J before they ride..... see my point? Hope this helps. I think i will do a second video just to clarify this point.
