Back in the mid 80's - early 90's I rode a bicycle a lot. For three years it was my transportation was because of a suspended license for one year and two additional years because insurance was too high. Years later when I got my license back I rode 26 miles every other day. I always rode with the flow of traffic and had a headlight and taillight for at night. It can be scary because unless you have mirrors, which I didn't, you don't know what's going on behind you unless you look back for a couple seconds, hoping no one rear ends me which never happened. I see people ride against traffic all the time, but what they don't realize is that people in cars coming towards them don't see them until just a couple hundred feet or so, then having to swerve into the oncoming lane causing problems. I would never ride on the streets today because of the amount of cars, trucks etc., out there and just like riding a motorcycle "which I have" people don't look for bicyclists.

As a lifelong Cyclist myself it annoys me when I see bike-riders doing twatish things on the roads, because they get us all a bad name, and because it happens so often I can understand why car drivers don't like us. I am also an HGV Driver, and last week for a sustained period of time I was behind two bike-riders (not Cyclists - there is a difference) who were weaving all over the road, through oncoming traffic, onto the path and back again without checking over their shoulders once. Then they were back in front of me for a while, with their complete lack of lane control, no consideration for anyone else, and generally just being idiots. I thought "do you really want to be riding like twats in front of an eighteen tonner on a busy main road?" It was only the presence of mind of the other road users around them that avoided a serious incident. So yes I can see why us Cyclists get bad publicity, because people think we are all the same as these idiots and the countless others who are like them.

@@busog97641 As a sensible, Highway Code adherent cyclist since the 1970s, there was a time when I thought that it was only a small minority of idiots who gave the vast majority a bad name. By the time I'd reached the year 2000, it had become apparent that it was actually the other way around. The vast majority of cyclists give the law-abiding tiny minority a bad name. Shame on all of them - plus shame on our police for not enforcing the law (although, outside of London they don't have a budget for it) and shame on our education system for allowing several generations of kids to grow up thinking that the law of the road doesn't apply to riding a bike.
@Teapot-Dave

@@jeffknight904 Same here. When I was at High School in the 1970s we were not allowed to ride our bikes to school until we had passed the Cycling Proficiency Test, and only then were we given our highly-prized "Bike Permit" (a piece of paper in a plastic wallet about the size of a playing card) and the number of a designated parking space in the school bike rack (mine was C2) I still ride to the principals we were taught back then (Highway Code), and still proudly have my badge and certificate, because it was a real sense of achievement to have earned them. But like you I got caught-out, because I thought that everyone else would ride to the same standard, and it comes as a bit of a shock when you realise that you are in the minority. Even now when I am approaching another person on a bicycle, I make a quick assessment on whether they look like they are in control and know what they are doing (Cyclist), or if they look a bit unpredictable and dodgy to be around (bike-rider), and it has always stood me in good stead so far. Maybe we are the last of our kind. I hope not and I have certainly taught my son the "old principals" in the hope that they will continue for a while yet.

@God Trojan I know what you mean, but I think that to be a Cyclist you need to possess a certain level of skill, and have pride in what you do. Someone in grey-trackies who is only using a bicycle to deal drugs on an estate is not a Cyclist in the same way as a proper club rider for example, even though they are both using a bicycle for their transport needs. It is probably just semantics on my behalf but I have always considered there to be a difference between a proper cyclist and someone who is a bike-rider.

CCTV enquiries came to nothing, but forensic examination of the burned out bike have revealed partial fingerprints and an unmatched DNA profile. They are hoping he will commit a similar sick crime such as crossing the road so they can match it to the profile on the National database. I doubt if this idiot even considers himself rightous. This bike rider was behaving in a dangerous and reckless manner. That's not responsible behaviour even if it is primarily his own life at stake. He is relying on drivers to be entirely responsible for his safety with no regards for any consequences he may cause for himself or others. I cycle a lot and I try to ride as safely and responsibly as possible and I still have many dangerous incidents from drivers who regularly endanger my life. This guy can only stay lucky for so long before his luck runs out. Calling out irresponsible drivers on videos is not wrong. It very much justified. And neither is calling out irresponsible arseholes on bicycles like this guy. I ride a bike regularly, drive a car, I'm a "white van driver" and drive tractors and other machinery so I see it from a lot of different perspectives. This guy unfortunately just reflects a proportion of the general population.

@@pappy9473 What you say is all true. But lack of good, never mind ideal infrastructure for pedestrians and cyclists doesn't absolve clowns on bicycles from behaving irresponsibly on whatever roadway they have to use. Or for drivers not to respect and allow cyclists who are sharing these less than ideal roadways with them the due respect and regard necessary for the cyclists safety. I live in a rural area and there is absolutely no infrastructure of any kind at all until I get to a larger town 20km away. I can't say because there's no infrastructure then that's an excuse for me to abandon safe and conscientious road behaviour driving or riding. In fact, I consider it the opposite. I have good mirrors on both sides on my bike along with good lights front and back plus I always wear a bright orange hi-vis vest and a helmet. If I'm holding up traffic for more than a minute where a vehicle behind is showing respect for my safety I will pull over as soon as I safely can. And I try to acknowledge drivers who show me respect in return. I'm not perfect by any means but I try because I see it from both sides.

Just to point out, when that cyclist was on the other side of the road he was travelling against traffic in a bus lane which is illegal, and most cycle lanes are not two way on roads where there is no separation

In the HWC it states that cyclists may not indicate a manoeuvre, they may be concentrating on other stuff such as if its windy, or bricks/stones in the road. However, I didnt see any issue on this, so he should have indicated.

I've been a cyclist and even I find them very annoying these days doubling up across the road and causing congestion, It's even worse up in the Peak District with all the hordes of tour de twats on small country lanes that weren't built for cyclists safety with huge tailbacks of motor vehicles. I just get the impression that roads are now for cyclists and the powers that be don't want motor vehicles anymore.

So many sarcastic comments about this. But if a car passes within 2.500001m of a cyclist its on the national news and off to the House of Lords to demand that the car driver is hung drawn and quartered. Loved the way he so considerately cut you up AND passed too close to the car pulling out (which wouldn't have bothered anyone if he'd been in the bike lane)

If you upset them they can smash your passenger door mirror off without anyone knowing who they are as bikes don’t currently require identification. In this day and age you’d think they should, in case they cause a serious accident and don’t stop, how can you bring them to justice?

Cyclists want to be treated like any other road user - then they must behave like any other road user. No overtaking on the inside, no ignoring traffic lights, no swapping status between vehicle and pedestrian when they want to cycle on the pavement. And most of all THEY SHOULD REQUIRE REGISTRATION PLATES. I can be traced for my road traffic crimes - so must they.

No offence to anyone but people are trying way too hard not to be offended that they are attempting to change the definition of cyclist and attempt to differentiate it from bike rider. The second any person gets on a bicycle and starts riding they become a cyclist. You're cycling therefore a cyclist. I'm a cyclist when I'm going to work or going for a ride to get exercise. Stop making life harder than it already is and leave the meaning of words alone.

Odd video. At 12 seconds you can see he very clearly does turn and have a very good and long view back at the Fiat. So long in fact that he made eye contact with the Fiat driver, as that driver slowed without braking, hence why no additional arm signal needed.

Kirkstall Road (A64) in Leeds, what you do expect? 95% of the cyclists are crazy. Will cycle on the pavement to skip the pedestrian crossings, cycle right pass cars/vans that have stopped to let pedestrians cross at pedestrian crossings, cycle pass red lights, cycle on the pavement even thought you can clearly see Kirkstall Road has a cycle lane. I've had a near miss myself at the 'island crossing'. A van driver stopped and let me cross, just as I pass the van I hear "move! move! quick". I look to see a cyclist coming right at me not slowing. I take the last 3ft in one bound, just hit the pavement as he cycles by. Van driver gives him a beep.
