Cyclops was terribly underused and underpowered in the movies. His optic beam has a power output of 2 gigawatts. He is capable of destroying buildings and levelling mountains, and not just delivering small concussive blasts. There are only two scenes that come close to demonstrating this ability: the scene in the station and the exchange with Jean where he ruptures the dam. If he wanted to kill someone, he could! Instead,he gets short-changed as his scenes are always used to demonstrate other's powers that are more acrobatic and easily choreographed.

In-universe theory: He is able to do exactly what you describe in the movies, but he holds back on purpose with some occasional instances where he starts to let his restraint slip.

he wasnt bad at all if anything he was perfect for the role they just gave him a shitty script and turned him into a background character .. The scenes in the X-jet and statue of liberty he did have caracteristics of his comicbook version ..

+Capcom Wolverine (Marvel) Sadly the damage has been done the causal moviegoers with no knowledge of the comics think that was an accurate depiction of Cyclops in the movies and find him boring and only Love Wolverine. I really hope for a reboot,I find the movies entertaining but I want all the characters to shine not Just Wolverine

Love him or hate him, but there is no arguing that Cyclops is one of the most prominent X-Men, despite the reduced role he played in the original series. Cyclops has gone from new recruit to field commander to leader of the X-Men to mutant terrorist over the course of his 50 years in comics. Given his place at the forefront of so many X-Men and Marvel storylines, it is likely that most fans already know plenty about him. James Marsden played the powerful mutant well. Marvel didn't do the character justice. I think they should do a Cyclops Origin movie which would make up for the lack thereof.

@makokun9 Despite getting a good actor for the role, the movies never showed the true Scott Summers. They instead made Wolverine into a type of hero he's not. Before you judge a character, go back to the original source. There's a reason why the comic book fans hated the third movie. Jean's and Cyclop's characters were made into something they weren't, and as icing on the cake they gave Wolverine Cyclop's tragedy and had Scott die a lame death.

Hell ... nothing has changed since you were younger - Cykes is still far more powerful than Wolverine. Regardless though, it really was a shame at how poorly that character was mistreated and disrespected in those films. Especially considering how perfect James Marsden was in that role. Granted, Wolverine is a great character as well ... but sucking up screen time from the other X-Men, to such a degree, that he even replaced Scott's iconic role in the Phoenix Saga? That was just overkill.

Lanch Lady Because his actor wanted to play in the superman movie and wolverine was so popular. I agree cyclops is an awesome character, he's a green beret with laser cannons for eyes but he's the guy other characters get to play rouges too. In movies guys like cyclops are the straight by the book guy the impulsive heroes ignore and blow by. Maybe they get to be awesome and save the day, usually they get saved.
