Mae d'eisiau di bob awr,
Fy Arglwydd Dduw,
Daw hedd o'th dyner lais
O nefol ryw.
Mae d'eisiau, O mae d'eisiau,
Bob awr mae arnaf d'eisiau,
Bendithia fi, fy Ngheidwad,
Bendithia nawr.
Mae d'eisiau di bob awr,
Trig gyda mi,
Cyll temtasiynau'u grym
Yn d'ymyl di.
Mae d'eisiau di bob awr,
Rho d'olau clir,
Rho imi nerth, a blas
Dy eiriau gwir.
Mae d'eisiau di bob awr,
Sancteiddiaf Ri,
Yn Iesu gwna fi'n wir
Yn eiddot ti.
cyf. John Roberts (Ieuan Gwyllt) 1822-1877
Tôn: Mae d'eisiau di bob awr (I need thee every hour)
There is need of thee every hour,
My Lord God,
Peace comes from thy tender voice
Of a heavenly kind.
There is need of thee, Oh there is need of thee!
Every hour I have need of thee,
Bless me, my Saviour,
Bless now!
There is need of thee every hour,
Abide with me,
Temptations lose their force
By thy side.
There is need of thee every hour,
Give thy clear light,
Give me strength, and a taste
Of thy true word.
There is need of thee every hour,
Most holy Lord,
In Jesus make me truly
Belonging to thee.
tr. 2008 Richard B Gillion

Just like my Granny Violet's Methodist Church, Woodland, IL Although not as grand as this, they sang with everything they had!

My Father had a small collection of records he purchased on his trip to Wales in the 1970s.. Amongst them was this Hymn. I never cared for them until I grew older and understood their significance. My Fathers Grandparents immigrated from Wales. Very hard times in mid 1800's. There is nothing more beautiful than a Welsh Choir. Also I found this Hymn on a cassette tape" amongst some of this things after my father died. Sometimes the things we think do not matter, matter more to us when we allow them deep inside our soul. Thank you for posting this.

My ancestor John Parry was the founder of the Mormon Tabernacle choir! The stories of the journeys that the Welsh took from Liverpool to Salt Lake city are incredible. Great material for a film.

This is absolutely beautiful. I only discovered this wonderful recording (what voices, what musical timing - 5,000 voices together, with the audience joining in) recently when my mother played it (from the vinyl version, jealously guarded, because there's no other version or copy that she knows of), singing along with the chorus .......

Mehefinheulog1 And my mother would have added, what intensity of emotion but she can't because she's not part of the computer world ....... i tried to find her some other recording of Welsh singing because her physical world's become very confined but could only find male choruses whereas she really loves this mixed singing, she used to have a beautiful voice herself - you wouldn't know of anything that i could find her (i would love to be able to find her something that brings the same joy as to when she listens to this)?

Helen Cramer I quite understand, my grandmother felt just the same (this cherished vinyl copy was hers) hard to find a finer Cymanfa Ganu on disk.

It is indeed beautiful Helen, takes me back to my childhood, when my dear mother would sing it while doing her everyday chores. x

I bought this record (vinyl at the time) and kept it preciously, lamenting it was nos available anymore, even in CD. But..; miracle, last year I found it was possible to buy it in the itunes store (with the "crashes" of the vinyl). This "5000 voices" is a pure miracle of beauty. I thought It was from 1961, not 1963... (it seeems to me that "1961" is on the vinyl cover) Now: maybe someone could tell me, because I don't speak welsh : (just some words, mixed with breton) what does the man says, before each song ? it does not seem to be the words of the song. Is it the story of the song (when it was written, by who ?..) Another question : I'm wondering if 5000 persons are singing togoether, or if "5000" refears to the totality of the singing groups presents for this festival. Excuse me for this very approximative english. I hope you understood, anyway. Thanks for answering

I think the original UK ssue was this oneon Delysé: www.discogs.com/Five-Thousand-Voices-A-Nation-Sings-Welsh-Hymn-Singing-Festival-Gymanfa-Ganu-1963/release/5519845, but it may have been recorded in 1961. The cover shown here is the 1972 reissue on Decca. And yes Emyr Jones reads the words, usually one verse and chorus. Yur English is very good indeed.

First time for me to hear this beautiful hymn since my youth. So sad that a lot of Welsh Chapels where we mostly learnt these hymns have been pulled down.

Distributed under the Delyse label and according to the music department at Cardiff University, never transcribed onto CD. It was the first of initially two in the "A Nation Sings" series., the second produces in 1964, also distributed by Delyse. Subsequent recordings of Eisteddfods recorded at Royal Albert Hall are on CD and were distributed by Black Mountain. Delyse is long since out of business and copies of the 1963 and 1964 recordings are available from time to time on line.

I too was keen to rediscover a copy of the 1963 recording, as it was favourite when I was a youngster. It was only 3-4 years ago that I was able to track down a vinyl recording. It was listed on some obscure UK auction site. I was also able to locate a CD of the 1972 Eisteddfod at Royal Albert Hall. In the past couple of years, I have noticed both recordings pop up on EBay with some regularity. Good luck in your quest.

yes, that's quite ironic, isn't it it's all part of the "picture postcard charm" of Wales and nothing whatever to do with music like this but if they bring a few tourists in... then fine, I guess!
