There’s humans addicted to sugar, humans addicted to dairy, humans addicted to videogames, humans addicted to validation, humans addicted to certain patterns and routines, humans addicted to drugs ( obviously ) and can very easily and quickly be developed as a result of underlying mental barriers that have to be overcame, but once you land in a repetetive cycle where a stimulus is used as a anchor for your issues ( often without the person realizing it unless they’re very self-reflective and introspective ) untill it’s developed into a full-blown addiction. And just like that there is a plethora of other ways a person can land into an addiction like that, doesn’t mean they’ll never self-reflect, objectify and tackle the root of their issues and evolve out of it. That is a very short-sighted and pessimistic view to have of addictive humans you described there.

And with all due respect, common people addicted to dairy, sugar, coffee, cigarettes, tv (etc) do not experience their addiction in the same way common addicts to crack, crystal meth, angel dust, cocaine, lean (etc) do. Although some gamers are more over the top than a sugar addict, gamers are not taking the risks or making the sacrifices someone on an expensive street drug. I see sugar addicts functioning in 9-5 or other jobs without issue. I've never a person on sugar selling their assets or possessions for something sugary. Same for people addicted to dairy. I also don't see these addicts having very strained relationships or poor boundaries (as a result of their addiction to sugar or dairy). That's not the case for addicts attached to hard and highly addictive street drugs. The energy required to get a sugar and dairy hit is different than the energy required to get crack, meth, angel dust, cocaine (etc) especially if the addict cannot afford it. Sugar is in everything. You can get 5 cent candy. Dairly is affordable. So addicts to these things, similarly to those addicted to coffee, cigs, gaming (you need the game and Internet connection), don't have to manipulate, scheme, sneak, lie, cheat, demean themselves, beg, borrow, steal, hide, deny, (etc) to get "a hit". Especially if they don't have funds to buy themselves the hits they want. The addictive substances you listed are, for the most part, accessible and acceptable which also means there is less stigma and shame attached to those using it seeking help if the need it. With that said, the problematic behavioral patterns and habits that people usually develop when addicted to hard street drugs are hard to change even after an addict stops using. I think it's important to highlight the distinction between things people can be addicted to. Now I will pull back on what I said as I believe some addicts, even to hard drugs, can change. Some do change. However, it requires lots of weed ork and Joe (from what we see of him publically) has not done that work. So people like him who do not do the work are less like to change their problematic behaviors. Even if the give up the main drug(s) of choice that were really problematic.

It’s also very situational and dependent on the root of your issue and your circumstances what substance or whatever it is that you’re overly going to abuse. I could write paragraphs and paragraphs about my own personal first-hand experience in this sort of thing and elaborate on alot of it but im cool off the strength that you realized not all addicts remain in the same mentally instable state they were once in. PS: personally I have only experienced HEAVY addiction to weed so I wouldn’t be able to firsthand provide the perspective of a hard-drug addict and their development out of it. But I know how my addiction affected me as a person and my thought-process so I could only imagine someone hooked on harddrugs way of thinking. Luckily I happened to be an introverted VERY self-reflective person who diagnosed himself and recognized the creation of my addiction was based on THINKING what I was doing was going to numb the pain and fix my mental situation and in some way shape or form aid me. Weed doesn’t take away something like anxiety, it might help temporarily while you’re smoking that joint and you’re chilling. But what about when you’re not smoking? What about when you’re in functioning work-environments where that isn’t even remotely an option? What about when you spent all your money on this addiction and you have no access to weed or whatever? Etc etc, I realized that I was only leading myself farther and farther astray from my core self and evolving as a human and FACING the pain and dealing with it accordingly instead of avoiding it and smoking it all away.
