I loved the original song in movie...as a southern I like to return to my great grandfather’s where I spent my first night on the earth in the house that sheltered my family for 100 yrs...lost to the family as greedy relatives wanted the $$$$ and not our history at will time to read the will...

Just finished watching ‘Trip to Bountiful’ movie again. It was made in 1985 and Geraldine Page won an Academy Award. This song by Cynthia Clawson is beautiful.

I am so glad you said that. I think she was about 52 years old. She was an amazing actress, and what a wonderful story, dont get me started on that beautiful music.

2:53 Beautiful Screen Shot direction. Looks like an Edward Hopper painting.

It really does! The quiet, the solitude, the isolation and introspection -- all trademarks of a Hopper painting.

From my long ago friend Cynthia Clawson who did the soundtrack for the Academy Award winning Trip to Bountiful with Geraldine Page getting the Oscar for best actress!

This 🎼 song is very emotional. I appreciate the idea of Our Lord Jesus. The repetition to come ⛪ home. No matter what happens, Jesus cares for us all. God Bless Us All.

When I was pastor of South Park Baptist Church in Beaumont Texas, we brought her to the church for a concert. After that she became a good friend and we got together when we could....usually at another concert or The Southern Baptist's Convention each year.

I discovered Cynthia Clawson over 40 years ago. Love her! I was fortunate enough to meet her in a restaurant in Texas a couple of years ago!

I've always felt that this movie was somehow prophetic. If you think about it, the younger generation are now stifling the religious and moral instincts of the older generation, just like the daughter-in-law and others stifled the instincts ts of Geraldine Page's character in the movie. Some young people in Idaho were recently arrested for singing hymns outside a court house to protest the masking, no hymn singing and social distancing mandates imposed by the State of Idaho on churches, so there's still hope. Still time to come home, America. Come home.

I do love hearing Cynthia sing this, old well-known hymn. This is NOT, though, the original tune composed in 1880(!) by WILL L. THOMPSON which opens the film "Trip to Bountiful". This is actually a new tune, an arrangement Cynthia recorded circa 1976.

Sorry, but I'm terribly disappointed. She has an absolutely amazingly beautiful voice, and this version is wonderful. However, I wanted to hear it sung the way she did it in my very favorite movie of all time, The Trip To Bountiful. At the start of the movie, this stunning high soprano voice that sounded like it was coming from an angel with a voice like the clarity of a high-pitched bell. That was the version I had hoped to hear. Over the years since this unparalleled movie was released in 1985, I have watched it without exaggeration at least 20 times, and I never fail to get choked up and find tears running down my face as I close my eyes and listen to my late mother's and my most favorite of all hymns being sung in that glorious soprano voice. So, yes, I was disappointed when she offered up a completely different sounding rendition of my favorite hymn from my favorite movie. Please believe that I am in no way denigrating this version, as it, too, is, simply put, beautiful and flawless, just not the version I was expecting to hear.

You can find the Cynthia Clawson version with the original tune right here. Just type Softly and Tenderly + Cynthia Clawson into the search space. There are a few different versions by her. All of the others, I believe, have the traditional melody. I really had to look to find this one.
