And Turkish Jets strike to Kocatepe. Kocatepe's warned Turkish Jets with radios and said that they are Turkish. But Turkish Jets thought that was fake from greeks to not to target the ship. And Turkish Jets Keep targetting to Kocatepe then they sunk the Kocatepe.

Kocatepe was part of a NATO task force weeks before this happened. Some of us American sailors met with our counterparts from the Kocatepe while in Toulon and we were invited aboard . It was sad to hear of her sinking and loss of life.

What this 'documentary' doesn't detail is the fact that the Greeks were buoyant after getting rid of Makarios and thought that unification with Greece was a done deal. Consequently they DID start committing atrocities against the Turkish people, particularly in the south of the island where they destroyed houses, restaurants and other businesses belonging to Turks. There were also incidents of Turkish civilians being shot and even being dragged behind cars by Greek civilians. All this was happening long before the Turkish reinforcements arrived.

Wow great work, well done. My dad was in the Turkish Air Force at that time, operating one of the F-100 aircrafts for air to ground operations around Nicosia. My family is from Cyprus, and when I visited there I had a change to meet them also. They told me that they were living in peace with the Greek people before all those political manipulations took place. They also told me the times before the Turkish operation was very hard and brutal for them. Their village was occupied by Greek army and Eoka and many slaughters took place in front of their eyes. I don't mean that we did not do anything wrong and of course it is very sad for both sides. But when I witnessed what my relatives and Turkish cypriots have faced with, I became quite sure that Turkey was right to attack. Even though I used to be suspicious about the invasion and don't like militarism at all.

BTW For those wondering why NATO did nothing, it is because that Makarios III was very close to the Soviet Union (but not aligned to it). The USA and NATO did not do anything so Cyprus would be closer to the Western side of the Iron Curtain after the crisis. Does "peasants" held the industrial part of the country, had their own militias which had more than "rusty rifles", were supported by almost all the navy and air force (they could have blocked the african troops in Morocco but were incompetent), integrated thousands of international volunters to their army ranks (some of them veterans from WWI), were supported massively by the Soviet Union, Mexico, etc. Saying both sides werent equally matched is at best debatable.

The industry held by the Republic in 1936 is not suited to production of arms, and the Republic relied heavily on an overcharging international market, indeed this is what spells the death of the republic throughtout the war. See Howson's book Arms for Spain for more detail, but arms dealers would often charge upwards of 200% market price for very outdated rifles. (The 1st British volunteers in Spain went into action at Lopera armed with m1888 Manlicher rifles without the necessary en bloc clips meaning they were effectivley single shot weapons.) After this, the Republic's reliance on militias in mid 1936 meant that resistance to the Army of Africa was wholy ineffective as militias wouldn't fight outside their home provinces or even their villages. They were steamrolled in open country due to lack of experience in this kind of warfare and the nationalists were able to sweep up the nation, connect their disparate territory. By the time of the International Brigades arrving en masse in November 1936 the Nationalists already had Madrid under siege, prevented the Catalans from taking Zaragoza, and taken Irun cutting the Basque region off from any possible French aid (which would realistically never arrive anyway given Franc'es political situation)

Not unwinnable given some more favourable circumstances for the Republic or more overt Soviet support, or the involvement of France and Britain. (or even just France) But these things were unlikely for a myriad of reasons.

I am a Turkish Cypriot. Why you are not saying that Greek Cypriots started a holocaust on 21 Dec 1963 -bloody Christmas- while there was a Cyprus Republic. They slaughtered many innocent Turks who were their neighbors. In 11 years from 1963 to 1974, Turks were forced to live in the worst situations and were forced to leave all their belongings. Also after the war TRNC - Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus- is not recognized by the international community as you said while the Greek part is recognized under the name of Cyprus Republic. There was no punishment for the Greek side which started the war. As a matter of fact, they get the whole republic to themselves. Another issue is that; there was an Annan's Plan -from the UN- to solve the issues in 2004 or 2005, Turks voted yes and the Greeks voted no to that plan. After this voting, although Greeks voted no, the EU took Cyprus into the union which was the only carrot for the Greek government. Nowadays, as a Turkish Cypriot, my existence is not recognized by the internal community and we can't do anything international even sports -maan this is nonsense-. By the way, if I were the Greek government I will not sign any agreement because I will be sharing all the privileges with the other side without gaining any significant things. Hence, they're staying at the diplomatic table only because of saying we are trying to make peace with Turks to the international community to not take any attention. As a Turkish Cypriot, I am shouting via your video that the future of the Turkish Cypriots is crushed by the Greek Cypriots and their supporters. We are like ghosts, with no international identity, and no rights to do anything international.

My family went to Ireland for Holiday in 1974 at the height of the Irish troubles , while my mothers sister & her family went to Cyprus . Always remember her sister saying “why you going to Ireland with all its troubles with NI “. My mums sister & family was evacuated from their Hotel on a British RAF Cargo plane home. ​@@boardelia greek just could not dare a war with turkey because cyprus is much more far away from greece if you compare with turkey. they could not send marines because of turkish aircraft, and they can not send their aircraft with marines because technology level of that days makes it impossible in such distance. and also, turkey were much more ready to a war with greece so that would be a lost war and lost cyprus for greece for sure and greece goverment was well aware of this. thats why they did not intended this. big numbers of turkish military were waiting for order to attack in thrace and they had their attacking plans and greek defensive plans as documents

This was a misnomer to cover up EOKA's massacres and to conceal Makarios support for them. Even today, EOKA members stop buses and say that they killed Turks and Makarios was happy about it. EOKA took this name when it sided with the junta officers instead of Makarios.

@@Risin33 Two different generations - 50s and 70s. The 50s were freedom fighters which included heroes like Grigoris Afxentiou, and which targeted the British rule in Cyprus. The 70s so called EOKA B was wrong causing a disaster in Cyprus. The Greek military Junta, a dictatorship, was in control of EOKA B, but crucially, behind the Junta was the CIA, with the aim of overthrowing Makarios in order to give Turkey an excuse to invade and occupy Cyprus, using the Turkish Cypriot community as their pretext, even though Makarios survived the coup. Henry Kissinger gave the green light to Turkey to invade Cyprus at the height of the cold war. To this day Turkey is illegally occupying half of Cyprus, opposing UN Resolutions. Cyprus is a victim of it's geographical location. Cyprus has been refered to as the unsinkable aircraft carrier. The coup in Cyprus followed by Turkey's invasion were both pre-planned events, one to follow the other. Cyprus's internal problems have been caused by outside influences. The Cyprus Conspiracy, by Brendan O' Malley and Ian Craig is interesting reading which makes a lot of sense.
